PLEASE READ: Yes, I know the sound is crappy. Yes, I know the video quality could be better. This was made mostly out of fun, as an audition tape for Lonely Planet - not really made for mass consumption. I decided to put it up on youtube at least as a record of what Williamsburg, Brooklyn is (and was -some of the locations we shot at don't even exist anymore!) So take it for what it's worth --

Borough Park, Brooklyn
Borough Park (usually spelled Boro Park by its residents), is a neighborhood in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn, in New York City in the United States.
Borough Park is home to one of the largest Orthodox Jewish communities outside of Israel, with one of the largest concentrations of Jews in the United States and Orthodox traditions, rivaling many insular communities. Since the average number of children in Hasidic and Hareidi families is 6.72, Borough Park is experiencing sharp growth.] It is an economically diverse area, with rich, working class and poor people living side-by-side and going to the same schools and synagogues.
Its heart lies between 11th and 18th Avenues and 40th and 60th Streets. Borough Park is patrolled by the NYPD's 66th Precinct.

America needs Jews just like you!! UN General Assembly, New York City, September 27th, '18.
Thousands of members of New York’s Orthodox Jewish community, organized by the Rabbinical Alliance of the USA, protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who addressed the UN General Assembly I'm September 27th '18. The demonstration held in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza in Manhattan, 47th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues, Thursday September 27 at 5:00 PM.
Protesters intend to focus on the fact that since the passing of a 2014 law, the Israeli government has been forcing Orthodox Jewish young men to serve in its army. Recently, they have been enforcing the laws more strictly, and cracking down violently on anyone who speaks out. Those who refuse to comply with the draft, due to their religious convictions, as well as those who protest against the law,are treated brutally. Hundreds of boys and even girls have been thrown into prison.
“We are going to send a message to the United Nations that Benjamin Netanyahu does not represent the Jewish people or the Jewish religion,” said Rabbi Aron Jacobowitz, a spokesman for the group. “According to the Jewish religion Jews are forbidden to create a sovereign state or wage wars against other nations, therefore the State of Israel is in total violation of Judaism. Authentic Jewry never recognized the State of Israel and therefore refuse to serve in the Israeli army”
“Anti-Zionist Jews, as conscientious objectors, deserve the right to be exempt from service in the Israeli army, as set down in UN Commission on Human Rights resolution 1998/77.
“The recent forced military draft of religious Jews against their religious convictions is a violation of the freedom of religion of these communities, and the cruel oppression of protesters is a violation of the universal freedom of speech. This is another stage in their on going efforts to force the remaining authentic Jews to take part in their criminal movement. Their intent is to uproot religious Judaism.
“All that our communities in the Holy Land want is to live in peace with their non-Jewish neighbors and practice and preserve the Jewish religion, as we did prior to the establishment of this political State of Israel. We do not desire power or domination.
“The Zionist movement came to execute a transformation of Judaism from a religion to nationalism, therefore the Zionist state’s claim to be a “Jewish” state is the worst kind of identity theft. The State of Israel is not Jewish at all, and its ongoing actions do not represent world Jewry. The ongoing crimes committed by the state against the Orthodox community prove once again that they don’t represent the religious Jews living in the Holy Land, let alone those around the world.”
Rabbinical Alliance of the United States and Canada is an umbrella organization uniting dozens of congregations with the goal of strengthening Judaism in Jewish communities around the world.

Greenpoint, Polish Neighborhood in Brooklyn to Frédéric Chopin
Greenpoint is the northernmost neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, in the U.S. state of New York. It is bordered on the southwest by Williamsburg at the Bushwick inlet, on the southeast by the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and East Williamsburg, on the north by Newtown Creek and Long Island City, Queens at the Pulaski Bridge, and on the west by the East River.
Originally farmland – many of the farm owners' family names, such as Meserole and Calyer, are current street names – the residential core of Greenpoint was built on parcels divided during the 19th century, with rope factories and lumber yards lining the East River to the west, while the northeastern section along the Newtown Creek through East Williamsburg became an industrial maritime area. It is now known for its large Polish immigrant and Polish-American community, and it is often referred to as Little Poland. )
Williamsburg is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, bordering Greenpoint to the north; Bedford–Stuyvesant to the south; Bushwick, East Williamsburg, and Ridgewood, Queens to the east; and Fort Greene and the East River to the west. Part of Brooklyn Community Board 1, the neighborhood is served in the south by the NYPD's 90th Precinct[3] and in the north by the 94th Precinct.[4] In the City Council, the western and southern part of the neighborhood is represented by the 33rd District; and its eastern part, by the 34th District.[5][6] As of the 2010 United States Census, the neighborhood had a population of 32,926, an increase of 2.0% from the 32,269 enumerated in 2000.[7]
Williamsburg was, during the early 2000s, an influential hub of contemporary music like indie rock, and is attributed to be the place of origin of electroclash and had a large local hipster culture, a strong art community and vibrant nightlife. Thus, it also earned the nickname Little Berlin.[8][9] The area experiences a steady gentrification. Many ethnic groups have based enclaves within the neighborhood, including African Americans, Italians, Jews, Hispanics, Poles, Puerto Ricans and Dominicans.

New York City Mayor Declares Public Health Emergency Amid Measles Outbreak NBC New York
Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a public health emergency Tuesday amid a measles outbreak — the worst outbreak in New York City since 1991.
The declaration comes after the New York City Health Department ordered all ultra-Orthodox Jewish schools in a neighborhood of Brooklyn on Monday to exclude unvaccinated students from classes during the current measles outbreak.
The health department said that any yeshiva in Williamsburg that does not comply will face fines and possible closure.
The emergency order, which will take effect immediately, states that people living in four zip codes in Williamsburg — 11205, 11206, 11221 and 11237 — must get vaccinated or face fines up to $1,000.
We have a very dangerous situation on our hands, De Blasio said Tuesday. We cannot allow this dangerous disease to make a comeback here in New York City. We have to stop it now.
City health officials said the measles outbreak among Orthodox Jewish communities continues to increase at an alarming rate.
Officials say 285 cases have been confirmed in New York City since the beginning of the outbreak in October. Most cases have been reported from Williamsburg and Borough Park - two Brooklyn neighborhoods with large Orthodox Jewish populations, in which vaccination rates tend to be lower.
New York City accounted for about two-thirds of all U.S. measles cases reported last week. But areas outside the city are also seeing a surge in cases.
Last week, a state judge issued a preliminary injunction against a Rockland County emergency order banning children from public places unless they've been vaccinated against measles. Civil rights lawyer Michael Sussman called the order arbitrary and capricious.
The county had enacted the 30-day emergency order to fight a measles outbreak that has infected at least 166 people since October. Rockland's outbreak has most heavily affected Orthodox Jewish communities.
Health officials say the best way to stop the disease's spread is a vaccination rate in the community of 92 to 95 percent.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all children get two doses of measles vaccine. It says the vaccine is 97% effective.
Mayor de Blasio will hold a press conference Tuesday to make an announcement on the growing measles outbreak across the Big Apple.
BURNING OF THE ISRAELI FLAG, 2009 BROOKLYN, NEW YORK

פיתוח והפקה: IN YOUR FACE

The Jewish community in the United States is the second largest Jewish community in the world, second only to Israel. Due to the fact that the United States has clear separation of Church and State, it is difficult to know exactly how many Jews live in the country, but various surveys puts the number at roughly 6 million, which is 2% of the country’s total population. In New York, the state with the largest Jewish community in the US, 13% of the state’s population is Jewish.
Forty percent of partners at leading law firms in New York and Washington, D.C. are Jewish. Thirty percent of the American Nobel Prize laureates in the sciences and 37% of all American Nobel Prize winners are Jewish. The US congress and senate are 10% Jewish despite the fact that just 2% of the US population is Jewish.
According to a study done by the Pew institute that was published in 2013, 62% of Jews in the United States see their Jewish identity as their “ethnic culture” rather than as their religion. Just 15% of American Jews see their Judaism as a religion. The largest religious Jewish movement is the Reform Judaism and 35% of religious Jews in the United States consider themselves Reform. 18 percent consider themselves to be Conservative while just 10 percent consider themselves to be Orthodox, while the proportions are flipped in Israel. The most important fact, however, may be that 30 percent of American Jews do not feel that they belong to any of these groups.

Hasidic Newspaper Photoshops Hillary Clinton From White House Situation Room Iconic Photo
Hillary Clinton missing in Situation Room photo in Der Tzitung newspaper
Der Tzitung responded in an emailed statement, that the photo editor did not read the fine print on the picture and the newspaper has since apologized to the White House and State Department. In accord with our religious beliefs, we do not publish photos of women, which in no way relegates them to a lower status... Because of laws of modesty, we are not allowed to publish pictures of women, and we regret if this gives an impression of disparaging to women, which is certainly never our intention. We apologize if this was seen as offensive.
Full statement by Der Tzitung.
The White House released a picture showing the President following live the events in the apprehension of Osama Bin Laden, last week Sunday. Also present in the Situation Room were various high-ranking government and military officials. Our photo editor realized the significance of this historic moment, and published the picture, but in his haste he did not read the fine print that accompanied the picture, forbidding any changes. We should not have published the altered picture, and we have conveyed our regrets and apologies to the White House and to the State Department.
The allegations that religious Jews denigrate women or do not respect women in public office, is a malicious slander and libel. The current Secretary of State, the Honorable Hillary R. Clinton, was a Senator representing New York State with great distinction 8 years. She won overwhelming majorities in the Orthodox Jewish communities in her initial campaign in '00, and when she was re-elected in '06, because the religious community appreciated her unique capabilities and compassion to all communities. The Jewish religion does not allow for discrimination based on gender, race, etc.
We respect all government officials. We even have special prayers for the welfare of our Government and the government leaders, and there is no mention of gender in such prayers.
All Government employees are sworn into office, promising adherence to the Constitution, and our Constitution attests to our greatness as a nation that is a light beacon to the entire world. The First Amendment to the Constitution guarantees freedom of religion. (See below.) That has precedence even to our cherished freedom of the press! In accord with our religious beliefs, we do not publish photos of women, which in no way relegates them to a lower status. Publishing a newspaper is a big responsibility, and our policies are guided by a Rabbinical Board. Because of laws of modesty, we are not allowed to publish pictures of women, and we regret if this gives an impression of disparaging to women, which is certainly never our intention. We apologize if this was seen as offensive.
We are proud Americans of the Jewish faith, and there is no conflict in that, and we will with the help of the Almighty continue as law-abiding citizens, in this great country of our's, until the ultimate redemption.
NEWS REPORT
The First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
