Hauraki Rail Trail, MTB
The Karangahake Gorge Historic Trail is a 30km section of the Hauraki Rail Trail from Waihi to Paeroa & back again.
It is an easy ride following the historic Paeroa to Waihi rail line passing old mining relics and buildings and through a 1kilometre rail tunnel. Old mine machinery and buildings can be seen from a number of locations along the way.
The 1km tunnel is lit but bike lights are usefull. At Owharoa there is an old rock quarry established in 1914. A short side track close to the quarry leads through bush to an attractive waterfall.
We also stop at Ohinemuri Estate Winery to sample some wine as well as stopping off at the Waikino Tavern for a cold beer before heading back to Waihi.
