Prague - Lucerna Rooftop
The Lucerna rooftop – that is 1000 m2 of unique space above the Lucerna palace. The whole building carrying distinctive elements of subsiding Art Nouveau and incoming Modernism has been finished in 1921 by Vácslav Havel (the grandfather of president Václav Havel). Since the beginnings of the construction, social events were planned at the large roof terraces. However, the intent wasn’t realized. Builder Vácslav Havel passed away within the following year after completion of the construction. His sons Václav M. Havel and Miloš Havel were more focused on building Barrandov Terraces, Barrandov Studios and cinematic industry. Then the war came, then communists and subsequently long dispute about ownership of the Lucerna that was brought to a successful conclusion by madame Dagmar Havlová, a wife of deceased Václav Havel and owner of the palace.

1950s VISIT TO CZECHOSLOVAKIA PRAGUE BOHEMIA PILSEN EASTERN EUROPE TRAVELOGUE FILM 64314
Presented by Czechoslovak State Films, this 1950s film is a “pictorial report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of the visit to Czechoslovakia of the Economic Commission for Europe delegation.” The film opens with a shot of Prague looking across the Vltava River at what appears to be the skyline of the Old Town Square area. The ECE delegation arrives at the airport aboard a Swiss Air Lines plane (00:54). The delegation walks with members past a “historical memorial” (01:40), including a castle south of Prague. Viewers see the giant rock formations Prachov Rocks (02:10); men take photographs of the “Bohemian Paradise” landscape. The delegation visits the hydroelectric dam at Slapy (02:44), then they tour the famous brewery in Pilsen (03:10). Delegates walk out of the brewery with bottles of beer in their hands; they look at an old large stone vat that was used to boil beer. Next, the delegates tour the Zetor tractor factory in Brno (03:55). They watch men work on the production line, assembling Z 35 tractors. Zetor Super tractors sit outside the factory (04:37), and a man gives a maneuverability test demonstration on one of the caterpillar models of the tractors, driving over rocks and other obstacles. Delegates ride a train through the Czech countryside (05:27), and the film shows winter barley fields. A new combine harvester harvests the grain (06:00). At an equipment station, delegates examine the combine harvesters. The film then takes viewers to an agricultural cooperative with its new residential buildings (06:40). A man moves manure. Viewers see livestock at the cooperative, including cattle and chickens. A woman feeds chickens. At Kladruby, delegates visit the National Horse Breeding farm and see where thoroughbred horses are raised. Horses run through the grounds (07:40). The ECE delegates are greeted with the ancient Slav custom of bread and salt at a collective farm (08:07). Delegates tour the grounds of the collective. The collective puts on a large feast outside on picnic tables for the delegates (09:02), and the film shows the leader of the Soviet delegation, the German Democratic Republic delegates, and the American delegate. Later, at a palace, men play folk music and Czech girls dance with the delegates (09:33). The film concludes with footage of everyone dancing in front of the castle.

Frank O. GEHRY - The Dancing HOUSE

The Dancing House or Dancing Building or Ginger & Fred is the nickname given to the Nationale-Nederlanden building in downtown Prague, Czech Republic at Rašínovo Nábřeží 80, Praha 2. It was designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry in co-operation with Croatian-Czech architect Vlado Milunić on a vacant riverfront plot (where the previous building had been destroyed during the Bombing of Prague in 1945). The building was designed in 1992 and completed in 1996. The very non-traditional design was controversial at the time. Czech president Václav Havel, who lived for decades next to the site, had supported it, hoping that the building would become a center of cultural activity.
Originally named Fred and Ginger (after Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers - the house resembles a pair of dancers) the house stands out among the Baroque, Gothic and Art Nouveau buildings for which Prague is famous.
The Dancing House is set on a property of great historical significance. In its place a house was destroyed by a bomb during live World War II. The plot and structure lay decrepit until 1960 when the area was cleared. The neighboring plot was co-owned by Czech ex-president Vaclav Havel. Havel spent his childhood next door and eventually decided to have a survey taken of the site by future designer Vlado Milunic, hoping for it to be the site of a cultural center. ING Bank (previously called Nationale Nederland) soon agreed to sponsor the building of a house on site. The super bank soon chose Milunic as the lead designer and asked him to partner with another world-renowned architect to approach the process. Jean Nouvel turned down the idea because of the minute square footage. Well known American architect Frank Gehry accepted the invitation. Because of the bank's excellent financial state at the time, it was able to offer almost unlimited funding for the project.
Known as deconstructivist (new-baroque to the designers) architecture due to its unusual shape. The dancing shape is supported by 99 concrete panels, each a different shape and dimension. On the top of the building is a large twisted structure of metal nick named Medusa. In the interior of a square of buildings in the eighteenth and nineteenth century, the Dancing House has two central bodies. The first is a tower of glass that is close to half height and is supported by curved pillars, the second runs parallel to the river, which is characterized by the moldings that follow a wavy motion and distributed through the windows so the non-aligned. This solution has been driven mainly by a kind of aesthetic consideration: the windows lined evidenciarían that the building has two windows, although they have the same height as the two adjacent buildings of the nineteenth century. They also don't have to be perceived in the will of the designer, as simple forms on a flat surface, but must achieve the effect of three-dimensionality, hence the idea of frames as outgoing frames of paintings. Also the winding moldings on the facade make it more confusing perspective, diminishing the contrast with the buildings that surround it.

RIP Vaclav Havel | Last Will + Testament to the Czechs + Slovaks | Adam Daniel Mezei VB #325
...the good Slovaks, that is. ;-) Not the denizens of Blava's Petrzalka or those who put the beat on good Hungarian-Slovaks. To you, this doesn't apply. You can click onto your favorite Hungarian-hating neo-NSDAP site of your choosing...
What you're about to hear, my babies, is the way Havel himself would have presented his thoughts and views had he a chance to speak candidly, openly, without banal political correctness, international fawning, Frankenspeak, and general political puffery and niceties which pass as discourse for most ex-politicos in any country.
What I'm about to say is the way Havel would have spoken to you had he bumped into you in a bar over a simple brewski sometime during the 1970s, when he didn't give a chimpanzee's ass or a bullcrap what people thought about him or how hardcore or raw his pronouncements were, back in the day when he needed to convey his views clearly, succinctly, and without fuzzy dialogue.
This is on a par with holy manifesto saintly Jan Hus' (John Hus, John of Hus -- AMEN!!!) the Husstie Mack Daddy Fighter-Philosopher-King, would have professed to his Hussite bros minutes before being set on fire on Konstanz/Constance by a lynch mob, victim to the ever-perfidious papal schemers and the tyrannical dictatorship of the Pope and Rome. Damn them!
You are not necessarily going to like what I'm about to say. Oh no...
And Slovaks -- the good and honest non Hlinka-ist ones who don't bow to the altar of Tiso and Hlinka in Zits, oops, Zips, oops Zilina -- will not appreciate the mirror I'm holding up to their otherwise well-mannered countenance (provided you don't hail from barf-y Blava)
But what I'm about to tell you is right and true, right as rain, sincere as the light of day, as honest as night follows day. As certain as Rice beats Texas. As certain as Prague is further west than Vienna, yet finds itself in the Communist bloc (go fucking figure?!).
Young Czechs no longer wish to be deceived by Flat Top (Vaclav Why Am I Always Constipated? Klaus), their corrupt perfidous political leadership, and no longer wish to eke out their hardscrabble living abroad in the former oppressing nations of Germany or Austria, seeking greener pastures in other nations when there's a perfectly heavenly abode straddling the center of the European Continent, G.od's Paradise On Earth, the Czech Nation, the Czechlands, the Czech Republic. Acknowledge its Praises.
May is cease being a republic only in name. In 2012, may Cesko be a republic in deed as well as need. Amen!
And, oh yeah, and Happy Fucking Holidays to you and yours...

Day 1 in Prague. Airport/rental experience
Flight was on time and landed at 7am local time in Czech Repulic. It took us about 20 minutes from the time we landed until we clear custom. If you travel with kids, you do get priority at the customs which is really great.
PRG airport is not that big either. Relatively small considering what we're used to. We found everything we needed. coffee shop, phone store, car rental and so on. Car rental was open pretty early in the morning along with some shops. Vodafone store did not open until 9AM local time.
I find it better to buy a vodafone SIM instead of getting these portable modems offered by companies such as Skyroam. They charge i believe about 100$ more but their data is capped at 1G per every 24 hour. I mean what's the point of that? they don't tell you this upfront unless you ask them. They will say fair data usage policy applies and you'd have to inquire further to learn the specifics.
Budget car rental at Prague airport is another kicker. Unless you do some research, you probably won't realize that there are two of them. One located outside int he main building where all the other Rentals and there is another one in the Marriot Hotel. We didn't realize this until we were told. It's not their fault since it was marked on the booking form. Dealt with two gentlemen there. They were pretty nice for the most part though customer service or friendliness didn't seem to be their forte but their were nice and did their job. They explained all the rules and regulations about driving within czech and other countries. We asked for a booster seat which wasn't on his file and he right away told us that the booking companies tell ok to everything but don't confirm. That was a bit of a shocker to us since it was very important for us. Luckily he was able to find us one at the other location. 12 Hours of driving here and it's not all that bad but it's a little confusing for sure. Get used to one way streets. This reminds me of Montreal now :)
Please have access to a GPS and it will save lots of time. There is absolutely zero english anywhere. Event the street names are pronounced so differently from how it's spelled. I've just finished 12 hours here and this is my take for now. If my opinion changes, i will be sure to update.
If you travel with kids, i'm sure you'd already looked into healthy food choices for your kids. We didn't find any issues with that. My kids are 6.5 and 1.5 and they both struggled to stay up due to the time difference. Even us adults, had a bit of difficulty.
Still managed to get some sight seeing done. The weather today wasn't that great. It rained for the most part with some sun.
