Strange New York - Hawks Nest and Tri-State Monument
Last week we took a little trip around New York. We began our journey in Delaware County next to the Pepactin reservoir where we viewed an eagle. We also visited Roscoe, New York a town known for its trout fishing. We then stopped for lunch and a drink at a great little pub in Hurleyville. We then ended up at our intended location, the Hawk’s Nest.
I was researching travel locations when I can across information on a portion of highway along a scenic by-way in Orange county New York. It is called the Hawks Nest. Hawk’s Nest is located on Route 97 just outside Port Jervis near Sparrow Bush, New York. The road is perched on a cliff face with views of the Delaware River below and Pennsylvania on the opposite shore.
We also visited the tristate monument in Port Jervis. This location is where New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania meet. Not much to see there but it was a great little side trip.
Wonderful day and some fun stops, hope you enjoy.

The Hawk's Nest -- NY Rte. 94
Hawk's Nest is a scenic location outside Port Jervis, New York. Its name is derived from the birds of prey that nest in the area. The location is also known for its winding roads and scenic overlooks in the Delaware River valley.
New York State Route 97, which traverses the site, was originally a one-lane dirt road beginning in 1859.[1] It was paved between 1931--1933 and subsequently dedicated in 1939, and rededicated on September 21, 2002, as part of the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway, according to a historical marker placed by the Town of Deerpark, where Hawk's Nest is located. The cautionary speed limit on the Hawk's Nest portion of Route 97 is 25 miles per hour (40 km/h); however, the actual speed limit is 55 mph.

Hawk's Nest (Road Trip Part 4)
My final leg in my Northern part of the road trip. Hawk's Nest is an awesome stretch of road on Route 97 in New York state, just above where the tri-states meet. I'll definitely be back in the Spring.

Standing in 3 states at once - NY/NJ/PA
Underneath Route 84 near Port Jervis, NY is a boundary marker for NJ & NY. Just a few yards away from that is another indicating the intersection of NY, NJ, & PA. You can be in all 3 at once. While the NY/NJ marker has been vandalized pretty badly, the tristate marker is in much better shape.
Scenic Overlooks Along Route 97 9/1/13
Instead of heading right towards home after leaving Steamtown, my dad and I instead did some exploring. Rather than getting onto Interstate 380, we stayed on Route 84, getting off at the exit for Route 6. My dad wanted to go to Shohola to see how much things there had changed since his childhood. After checking out the small town, we crossed the Delaware River and started making our way down Route 97 towards Port Jervis and ultimately Route 23.
On the way down, we stopped at two locations along the road so that I could see the view of the river and the mountains. The first stop was in Hawks Nest, while the second was the Park Avenue Observatory in Port Jervis. From the first overlook, we can see the Delaware River flowing along the border of Pennsylvania and New York, the sun beginning its descent as dusk approaches, an island resting in the middle of the river, and a bridge carrying the NYSW Southern Division between the two states.
The Park Avenue Observatory provided me with a view of the city, the remains of an old railroad yard, and the bridge carrying Route 6 across the river. There was also a plaque engraved into the cliff face, a map detailing the route of the Delaware River Scenic Byway, and a sign telling where Port Jervis got its name from.
