A State of Growth - An Illinois Beer Story
In honor of the 7th annual Chicago Craft Beer Week, we took a look at the expansion in the craft beer industry in the state of Illinois and the stories behind it.
The industry as a whole is growing and affecting so many industries around it - trucking, tank manufacturing, canning, design, raw materials, bar making - the list is endless. These five brewers are a small slice of the bigger picture, but are an accurate portrayal of growth in the state of Illinois and are representative of the industry as a whole. Craft Beer is, in fact, in a State of Growth.

Looking for something nice to surprise your beer loving significant? Thanks to the Chicago Beer Experience's beer tour you can embark on a journey to discover Chicago history while learning about beer's hoppy goodness while tasting several delicious microbrews! During the experience, guests visit four establishments: an Irish Pub, a beer-and-bacon bar, a neighborhood beer and wine store, and a punk rock bar dating pre-prohibition, and taste 16 different beers, most of which are Chicago or Midwestern craft beers. Trained guides lead the tours, weaving in information on history and a little beer 101 along the way. The walking tour covers approximately a half mile, is three hours, and takes place in the Lincoln Park/Lakeview neighborhood and is a little off the beaten track. And if that wasn't enough, the tour pairs four beers with four different types of bacon at one of the establishments! Chicago, history, beer, bacon; need I say more?

The vibe at Board Room is both high-energy and high-class thanks to its stellar sound and lighting systems and professionally trained staff. Tables overlook the dj booth and if your Valentine's date is getting too hot dancing the night away the rain shower effect that is incorporated into the wood décor adds a nice, cooling effect! Now, let's get to my favorite part.... Board room encourages its clients, yes you! to dance ON TOP OF your booth! Some would call this lounge river north's Boutique nightclub. We say ending the night with bottle service, beautiful staff and a laser show will captivate the most hardened of hearts!

For Lobster and Romance, perfect to celebrate the love holiday this week I think Acadia in the South loop is the ideal date spot. If you've been to the Chicago Auto Show at McCormick Place this week and needed a close walking place to warm up from the cold, Acadia's bar is also very amazing. The sophisticated elegance of Acadia provides a perfect backdrop for its contemporary and classic cuisine from Chef Ryan McCaskey. An open kitchen and wine room reinforce Acadia's commitment to quality food and wine. Chef McCaskey spent his early culinary days up in Maine, so needless to say the man knows lobster! His lobster pie and Lobster roll is one of the best I've had and is sure to impress even the most finicky of Valentine's Day dates.

Chris and Kevin's friendship is based on their love of quality beer and their refusal to grow up. So they formed the Chicago Brew Bus tour. Bus tours run Saturday and Sunday and include 3 stops at local breweries around Chicago. Local brewery stops may include Goose Island, Haymarket Brewery, Moonshine, Half Acre, and Piece. Tickets are $65 and include 4 to 6 4oz samples at each brewery and the best part is that you have a designated driver. Check the website for special tours to breweries outside of Chicago.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Haymarket District in Milwaukee (#801)
[Original Airdate: January 4, 2019]
Milwaukee’s Haymarket District may get its name from the past, but it’s the present and future of this perfectly situated, downtown Milwaukee neighborhood that has long-time tenants and developers alike singing this neighborhoods’ praises. For residents of Hillside and businesses like Bennett Coachworks and Miller Baking Company, this is just home. For places like Fiserv Forum and the new development coming to the old National Hardware building, it’s becoming home. And for the kids who learn at Golda Meir School and play at the Hillside Boys and Girls Club, it’s their home away from home. Any way you look at it, it’s nice to be home in the Haymarket.

[Original Airdate: January 24, 2019]
It’s true that Sparta Wisconsin is the bicycling capital of America, but we found lots of things happening here: soldiers marching, shovelmen building, luthiers crafting, quilters quilting, and, of course, bikers biking. Yes, Sparta likes active people and companies: Fast Eddie and FAST Corp fit right in, and so does John Gurda because he is the real life version of Ben Bikin. After all, John G. has literally been bikin’ all over Wisconsin! John McGivern is more like Ben’s friend, Willbee Ridin… As in, he will be ridin’ in his car back to Sparta because he’s coming for a longer visit!

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Jefferson (#803)
[Original Airdate: January 17, 2019[
In Jefferson, it’s all about Gemuetlichkeit. And even though an Irish guy like John couldn’t pronounce it, he sure could feel it! Who wouldn’t feel happy and welcome after walking through the renovated downtown, talking with plein air artists as they worked, visiting with Sister Grace at St. Colletta’s and eating Wedl’s hamburgers and Bon Ton’s bakery.
But John had some unique experiences that really defined the feeling. He sang with five G-Day Queens, hid the Mecki, watched the goats mow the island, and saw kittens being born at the Jefferson humane society! Believe him – there’s no place else with Jefferson’s Gemuetlichkeit!

Around The World In Eighty Days (A Luke Indran Audiobook)
This is an original reading of Jules Verne's Around The World In Eighty Days.
Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne | Audio book with subtitles
Around the World in Eighty Days (version 2) Read by Mark F. Smith.
Jules VERNE , translated by UNKNOWN ( - )
Mysterious Phileas Fogg is a cool customer. A man of the most repetitious and punctual habit - with no apparent sense of adventure whatsoever - he gambles his considerable fortune that he can complete a journey around the world in just 80 days... immediately after a newspaper calculates the feat as just barely possible.
With his excitable French manservant in tow, Fogg undertakes the exercise immediately, with no preparations, trusting that his traveling funds will make up for delays along the way. But unbeknownst to him, British police are desperately seeking to arrest him for the theft of a huge sum by someone who resembles him, and they will track him around the world, if necessary, to apprehend him.
This is an adventure novel of the first water, with wholly unexpected perils, hair-breadth escapes, brilliant solutions to insoluble problems, and even a love story. And can this be? - That he returns to London just five minutes too late to win his wager and retain his fortune? (Summary by Mark F. Smith)
