In this episode of Lakeland Currents, we turn our attention to a popular destination in downtown Bemidji. The Headwaters Science Center first opened in the summer of 1993, initially boasting a selection of handmade exhibits and a science-centered gift shop. The center continued to grow over the last 24 years and its offerings now feature live animals, many more exhibits, and increased opportunities for hands-on science exploration. Today, the Science Center continues its mission by offering science- and technology- focused exhibits and programming to the greater Bemidji region. We welcome to the program Annie Butler Ricks, the executive director of the Headwaters Science Center, and Mindy Clark, a Science Center board member who also co-chairs its marketing committee.

In 2017, Minnesota celebrated its highest percentage of high school graduates on record. That same year, the graduation rate at Bemidji High School hit a 15-year high. But is it enough? That record-setting statewide graduation rate was just under 83 percent, and at Bemidji High School it was 88 percent. A former university professor and area principal has been challenging the greater Bemidji community to consider what happens with the remaining 12 to 17 percent of students - those who don’t graduate. John Eggers has been working to mobilize the community to support Project Graduate, an initiative aimed at achieving a 100 percent graduation rate in Beltrami County. We welcome John Eggers to the show to talk to us about how Project Graduate works, and why he believes a 100 percent graduation rate is possible.

Lakeland Currents 801 - Water Conservation in the Mississippi Headwaters
Lakeland Currents host Ray Gildow welcomes Todd Holman from the Mississippi Headwaters division of the Nature Conservancy, and Dan Steward from the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources. Our water resources in the central and northern lakes area of MN appear abundant and of excellent quality. Unfortunately all is not what it may seem. Significant land conversion is taking place that likely will and in some cases has affected both our ground and surface water. In the last five years Minnesota has been ranked second highest in forest and perennial cover conversion to agriculture. Model data suggests significant changes to phosphorus and nitrogen loading as a result of drastic land use changes. The Mississippi Headwaters region represents not only the economic engine fueled by tourism, technology and timber, but also supplies the source water to water dependent communities locally and in the greater metropolitan area. So what do we do with that awareness? What do we protect? How much do we need to protect in order to achieve river, lake and stream resilience? How do we implement measured protection and who might the stakeholders be? These are all great questions that we will explore and offer suggestions from a private conservation non-profit perspective and a state board/agency practitioner perspective.

Boardwalks to Bike Paths takes viewers on an outdoor adventure, exploring the natural resources, history and recreational backdrops that comprise Northern Minnesota's state parks. From the mile long boardwalk into the wilderness of the Big Bog State Recreation Area to the 25 miles of rugged mountain bike trails overlooking the mine pits of Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area, Boardwalks to Bike Paths is brimming with breathtaking images. Other parks featured are Itasca State Park, Scenic State Park, Charles A. Lindbergh State Park and Crow Wing State Park. Learn about each park's history and the visionaries who helped advocate for the protection of treasured natural resources like the Mississippi River headwaters.
