1970 - Dan West | Heifer's History
While passing out meager rations of powdered milk during the Spanish Civil War, Indiana farmer Dan West was distraught when the supply of milk ran out with children still waiting in line. He realized that they needed “not a cup, but a cow.” Families did not need short-term relief, but a continual source of food and income. Heifer International was born from that simple idea. When they stopped fighting, we started feeding. In 1944, the first cows sent abroad were donated by West’s neighbors and distributed in Puerto Rico. While our work has evolved throughout the years, his initial vision continues to inspire our organization today.

Mary Bone: An American Farmer
Mary Bone, an Arkansas farmer and Heifer International project participant, shares why she farms and how Heifer has helped her achieve her goals. A major component of Heifer's work in the USA is connecting local farmers like Mary through a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), a business model that allows farmers to sell directly to consumers.
Community supported agriculture is a huge win-win for farmers and consumers. Customers get produce that is healthier, fresher, tastes better and is great for the local economy and the environment. Farmers get access to markets and the essential revenue and stability that makes small-scale farming possible.

Village in U.S. Teaches about Worldwide Poverty
A development group, Heifer International, gives livestock and plants to people in poor countries. The group has built an educational global village near the U.S. southern city of Little Rock, Arkansas representing housing in various poor areas of the world. American school and business groups come to the village to learn what it is like to live in developing countries. Several managers with a U.S. skin care company spent a night in the global village to experience some of the hardships. VOA's Deborah Block has the story.
