Helena National Forest is located in west-central Montana, in the United States. Covering 984,558 acres (3,984.36 km2), the forest is broken into several separate sections. The eastern regions are dominated by the Big Belt Mountains, and are the location of the Gates of the Mountains Wilderness, which remains much as it did when the Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through the region. The western sections have both the continental divide and the Scapegoat Wilderness area, which is part of the Bob Marshall Wilderness complex. The southern region includes the Elkhorn Mountains. The forest is composed of a mixture of grass and sagebrush covered lowlands with island pockets of lodgepole pine and more mountainous areas where Douglas fir, spruce and larch can be found. The rocky mountains in the region do not exceed 10,000 feet (3,000 m).
The grizzly bear has a sustained population in the northwestern section of the forest, especially in the Scapegoat Wilderness. Other predators such as wolves, bobcats, wolverines, mountain lions, and Canadian lynx are also present Black bears are numerous as are elk, moose, mule deer, and antelope. There are also small populations of bighorn sheep and mountain goats. Along streams and lakes, sightings of nesting bald eagles and other raptors are becoming more common due to protection of these species and their vitally important waterways.
700 miles (1100 km) of hiking trails are located in the forest along with numerous trout streams and several lakes. There are over a dozen improved campgrounds. Snowmobile use is common in the winter months as is cross-country skiing.
Interstate 15 runs north–south and U.S. Route 12 runs east–west through the area.
The largest nearby city is Helena, Montana, which is also the state capital, and the headquarters location for the forest.
The forest was the site of the 1949 Mann Gulch fire, which claimed the lives of 13 firefighters and which was the subject of both Norman Maclean's book Young Men and Fire and James Keelaghan's folk song Cold Missouri Waters.
In descending order of land area the forest is located in parts of Lewis and Clark, Broadwater, Powell, Jefferson, and Meagher counties. There are local ranger district offices in Helena, Lincoln, and Townsend.

It's been two weeks living full-time in Big Sky, Montana - watch to learn how things are going!
Last year, I fell in love with skiing and picked up a part-time seasonal job at a Montana Ski Resort for the Winter 2016/2017 season.
Prior to moving to Montana, I lived in NYC for five years and worked at a large advertising and marketing agency. Originally from Florida, living near the Rocky Mountains has been an incredible opportunity.
Throughout the winter, I am documenting my experience working at a ski resort and also as a freelance marketing consultant. PS - I learned how to ski a year ago at 28 years old. :)

Charter Oak Mine and Mill – A Montana Ghost Town - near Elliston, Montana, MT.
The Charter Oak Mine and Mill produced gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc from 1916 to 1955 when it closed due to market conditions. In 1995 the site became U.S. Forest Service property on the Helena National Forest. Toxic waste rock and mill tailings were removed between 1996 and 1998.
A two mile hike is required to access this site because both gates across the road are locked. Interpretive signs and picnic tables are provided by the Forest Service, Passport in Time Program and the Helena High School X-CEL program students. The site is protected by federal law and recently was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Montana Discovery Foundation conducts tours several times each year. Please contact them for the current schedule.

Mission Statement is as follows:
At the request of Intermountain Mining, owners of the White Hope Mine located in Lewis & Clark County Montana, Pacific Patriots Network, Oath Keepers and III%’s mission is to ensure the mining claim owners 4th & 5th Amendment Constitutional Right’s are not
violated and to prevent further unlawful action by the United States Forest Service.
Mining claims established before 1955 fall under the Mining Law of 1872. These claims are Public Domain and are treated as private property. The USFS has no legal standing or precedence for their recent actions, but has taken it upon themselves to require unnecessary permits, enacted stalling techniques, made threats of arson, and strong arm tactics to coax a generation of older miners to submit to unlawful authority, preventing them from working their rightful mining claim. The current claim being threatened has been in constant operation since 1924, therefore is not managed under the 1955 administrative regulation, which requires an operations plan. The claims are lawfully recorded with the miners controlling the surface rights and the resources on the land for use in their mining venture. Claims are not public property. In addition, privately owned gates have been locked into an open position to allow the public access to private claims. The use of fear tactics, harassment and unlawful action by Bill Avey, Helena National Forest Supervisor, will no longer be tolerated.
Intermountain Mining LLC, owned by George Kornec a Korean veteran and Phil Nappo a Vietnam veteran, have served a Notice of No Trespass on the White Hope Mine to the United States Forest Service (USFS), it’s employees, contractors and agents. Owners of the mine and all authorized parties will respond to any unlawful entry to the full extent of the law. Our intention is to run a peaceful security operation. Our position is to protect the rights of these miners thru a open dialogue with the USFS and reach a Legal & Constitutional conclusion.
