DENALI - THE NORTH AMERICA HIGHEST PEAK FROM AIR
By Surjanto Suradji (SURJANTO.COM - SURJANTOPHOTO.COM)
Deenaalee,'' now Denali, is the Koyukon Athabaskan name for the mountain, translating to THE HIGH ONE. It is also known as Mount McKinley, its former official name- is the highest mountain peak in North America, with a summit elevation of 20,310 feet (6,190 m) above sea level. Denali is the third most prominent and third most isolated peak after Mount Everest and Aconcagua. Located in the Alaska Range in the interior of the U.S. state of Alaska, Denali is the centerpiece of Denali National Park and Preserve. The peak and its surroundings mountain range was observed by taking a one and half hour flight seeing tour operated by K2 Aviation, which also includes landing at Ruth Glacier which also served as supply line for Denali base camp to support hikers in their attempt to conquer the famous peak.

Denali National Park Flightseeing Tour from Talkeetna
If you’re thinking of coming to Alaska to soak up its boundless beauty, then one stop on your journey is likely to be Denali National Park and Preserve. The undisputed gem of the park is Denali (formerly Mt. McKinley). The Koyukon people who inhabit the area around the mountain have referred to this peak as Denali for several centuries. This famous mountain has the highest peak in North America, with a summit elevation of 20,310 feet above sea level. We were lucky enough to get a clear view of the top of Denali, which I reveal towards the end of the video.
For our tour we used Sheldon Air Service, which we found was more budget friendly than the other Denali flight tour providers in Talkeetna. Although the plane was manufactured in 1951, it had been mechanically updated and was just fine to give us amazing views of Alaska’s dramatic landscape and rugged wilderness. If you have a little extra time and money to do a flightseeing tour around Denali National Park, then you must do it! It may be the highlight of your trip.

Alaska: Flight Tour around Denali, The Great One
We were originally scheduled to land a ski plane on Ruth Glacier Amphitheatre, near Denali, but due to cloud cover, we had to adjust our tour to a flight weaving near The Great One (Denali), its surrounding peaks, and over their glaciers, instead, in a Piper Navajo Chieftain. It was, nevertheless, ...indescribable.

Alaska has more than 40% of the nation’s surface water resources including over 12,000 rivers, 3 million lakes greater than 5 acres and numerous creeks and ponds.
...that's just the ones over 5 acres in size. Most of the lakes are unnamed, we were told.
Alaska has over 33,000 miles of coastline. It is the only state to have coastlines on two different oceans: Arctic Ocean and Pacific Ocean.

The Hurricane, or Hurricane Turn, is a passenger train operated by the Alaska Railroad between Talkeetna and Hurricane Gulch in Alaska. This train is unique in that rather than making scheduled station stops, it is a flag stop train meaning that passengers between Talkeetna and Hurricane can wave a white cloth anywhere along the route and the train will stop to pick them up. ...The Hurricane Turn is one of the last true flagstop trains in the United States.

20150708: Day 31, Denali Shuttle Tour
20150708: Denali Shuttle Bus Tour
Exploring Denali National Park via a Denali Shuttle Bus
The 8th of July 2015, a Wednesday, was our 31st travel day. This video is part 3 of 3, covering our Shuttle Bus Tour of Denali Park on the 8th of July, 2015.
After dropping off the pups at the Tonglen Lake Kennel on the 7th of July, we were on the road early on the 8th of July arriving at the Wilderness Access Center around 07:30 AM. We boarded the tour bus and were on our way into the park shortly after 9:00 AM. The tour lasted for over 8 hours, the weather was mixed from overcast to rain...with a bit of smoke in the air from fires still raging near Fairbanks.
The video covers highlights of the tour, including both video and photographic segments. Of special note: we've included views from Eielson Visitor Center (66 Mile Point) from 3 different days; 6, 7, and 8 July 2015 so that you may get an idea of what to expect. Denali is only visible about 20% of the time! During our tour on the 8th of July, we were NOT able to see Denali. The folks on the 7th of July tour were lucky to see the road beneath them due to the smoke. However...on the 6th of July Denali revealed herself! Too bad we couldn't have booked our trip on the 6th!
Upon returning to the Wilderness Access Center we headed for the Tonglen kennels to retrieve our pups...which enjoyed a bath and a bit of grooming during their stay. We also visited the Tonglen Cafe...picking up a plate of gourmet food for dinner that night...which included reindeer sausage.
These are the YouTube videos we've posted regarding the Denali segment of our Alaskan road trip:
