Grant's Getaways: Hells Canyon
Mark Yates makes his living in the deepest gorge in America. He's a 12-year veteran river guide who loves to share his vast backyard with folks eager to see an unchanged piece of Oregon from a different point of view. We met Yates at the Hells Canyon Creek Recreation Site, the put-in point for a his company's (Hells Canyon Adventures) jet boating trips on the Wild and Scenic Snake River in the deepest gorge in North America: Hells Canyon.

Hells Canyon
Join us for the grand vistas of Hells Canyon; a driving tour of the Oregon side. Absolutely amazing. According to the National Forest Service: Carved by the great Snake River, Hells Canyon plunges more than a mile below Oregon's west rim, and 8,000 feet below snowcapped He Devil Peak of Idaho's Seven Devils Mountains. There are no roads across Hells Canyon's 10-mile wide expanse, and only three roads that lead to the Snake River between Hells Canyon Dam and the Oregon-Washington boundary.

Oxbow Dam, Council Idaho Near Brownlee Dam. Dam's of America/United States!
Oxbow Dam is a hydroelectric run-of-the-river rockfill dam on the Snake River on the Idaho-Oregon border, in Hells Canyon (river mile 273). It is part of the Hells Canyon Project that also includes Hells Canyon Dam and Brownlee Dam, built and operated by Idaho Power Company.
The dam's powerhouse contains four generating units with a total nameplate capacity of 190 megawatts (250,000 hp).
Lacking passage for migrating salmon, the three Hells Canyon Project dams blocked access by anadromous salmonids to a stretch of the Snake River drainage basin from Hells Canyon Dam up to Shoshone Falls, which naturally prevents any upstream fish passage to the upper Snake River basin.
Grant's Getaways: Trek Into New Territory
The trails less traveled are the ones that I enjoy the most -- especially when there's a chance that the adventure holds on to Oregon history. At the south end of the Willamette Valley, three outdoor adventures combine hiking with unique history and the chance to trek into new territory at William Finley National Wildlife Refuge, EE Wilson Wildlife Area and Peavy Arboretum.

Along Hells Canyon Scenic Byway south of Joseph, Oregon!
As you travel up and into this high country of northeastern Oregon you will find this road that takes you along the Oregon side of Hells Canyon and bring you down to the dams along the Snake river. This is a paved road, but it does get some deep snow up along this way. In the video you can see seven devils peak, the blue mountains are abit north and east is Idaho. Beautiful place to stop and rest. I traveled from Walla-Walla, Washington south to Milton-Freewater where I turned east over tollgate pass over to highway 82 through enterprise(beautiful mountain view) and through a peaceful and artistic place of Joseph, Oregon.
