Helmsley Wall Gardens is over 250 years old, and I took a trip here to visit their wedding fair and spoke to Mike, the manager who dedicates his hard work along with his staff to make this garden look amazing.
With over five acres here to explore, I also caught up with Helmsley Town Crier David Hinde. He told me everything about the history of the job role and what he does. He also told me about his film role in the new Dads Army film.

Helmsley Walled Garden
OK for children and family viewing OK for children and family viewing Helmsley Walled Garden celebrates its 23rd year this year 2018. The five acre garden was built in 1759 and sits beneath the ruins of Helmsley Castle. It was abandoned and closed in 1984 but in 1994 restoration began and the garden has gone from strength- to- strength through the dedicated care of staff and volunteers.
The greenhouses have also been restored and the 120 feet herbaceous double border runs the length of the garden and planting changes with the seasons but in Summer it is a “hot border” with vibrant red, orange and yellow plants. In my video the Spring flowering was just coming to an end but still a lot to see and the Laburnum Arch was at its best.
The entrance is a short walk from the Pay & Display public car park and the garden is nice and flat to walk around and includes an orchard, vegetable garden and wildflower meadow. There is a Gift Shop and the Plant Centre has a large choice of beautiful plants for sale. The Vine House Cafe is well worth a visit.

We have never been to the see the Castle even though we have visited Helmsley many times in the past. As we were going around Helmsley Walled Garden, which is near the castle, we decided to make a full day of the lovely weather and visit it. A very interesting afternoon. Helmsley is a market town and civil parish in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire, the town is located at the point where Rye Dale leaves the moorland and joins the flat Vale of Pickering. The Cleveland Way National Trail starts at Helmsley, and follows a horseshoe loop around the North York Moors National Park and Yorkshire coast for 110 miles (180 km) to Filey. The remains of Helmsley Castle tower over the town.
It is situated on the River Rye on the A170 road, 14 miles (23 km) east of Thirsk, 13 miles (21 km) west of Pickering and some 24 miles (39 km) due north of York. The southern boundary of the North York Moors National Park passes through Helmsley along the A170 road so that the western part of the town is within the National Park.
The settlement grew around its position at a road junction and river crossing point. Helmsley is a compact town, retaining its medieval layout around its market place with more recent development to the north and south of its main thoroughfare, Bondgate. It is a historic town of considerable architectural character whose centre has been designated as a conservation area. The town is associated with the Earls of Feversham, whose ancestral home Duncombe Park was built overlooking Helmsley Castle. A statue of William Duncombe, 2nd Baron Feversham stands in the town's square. The town is a popular tourist centre and has won gold medals in the Large Village category of Yorkshire in Bloom for three years. The town square is a meeting place for motorcyclists as it is at the end of the B1257 road from Stokesley, which is a favourite with bikers.
Helmsley is situated on the southern boundary of the North York Moors National Park approximately 200 feet (61 m) above sea level. The town's geology is sandstone. To the west and the north of the settlement the moorland areas are predominantly limestone. Helmsley lies in a hollow in undulating open countryside, flanked by heather moor to the north and the rolling farmland of the Howardian Hills to the south. The flat lowland of the Vale of Pickering stretches eastwards from the town towards Malton. The River Rye runs by the town to the south where it is joined at Rye Bridge by the Borough Beck flowing southwards through the town from the moors. Meadows south of the Rye form an important buffer and create an attractive setting for the town from the southern approach.
Helmsley Arts Centre has a 140-seat auditorium and 40-seat studio/exhibition space.It provides film screenings, live music, theatre performances, comedy clubs, art exhibitions and workshops/classes. The 1812 Theatre Company is the resident amateur theatre company at the centre. It mounts at least three productions per year in the main theatre and two in the studio. The 1812 Youth Theatre meets there on a regular basis, putting on two shows a year.
The five-acre (2 ha) Helmsley Walled Garden, originally built in 1756, is being restored as a working kitchen garden. A walled garden for the castle stood along the banks of the river to the south. Soon after the family moved out of the castle into Duncombe Park this walled garden was built. The garden incorporates glass houses designed in 1850 as a vine house. The ongoing programme of restoration uses appropriate plants where possible.
Helmsley has an open-air swimming pool and a recreation ground providing facilities for tennis, bowls, cricket and football. The Cleveland Way, a horseshoe-shaped route around the North York Moors National Park starts in Helmsley. It follows the moor's western escarpment to meet the coast at Saltburn-by-the-Sea, and then follows the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast to end at Filey. Other places of interest include the International Centre for Birds of Prey, Rievaulx Abbey and Helmsley Arts Centre.

Helmsley Walled Garden
To visit Helmsley Walled Garden use the car park, Cleveland Way (YO625AH) close to Helmsley Castle. We also we paid a visit to the Castle after the Garden. Very nice relaxing walk around the five acres with its nice selection of perennials and a lovely view of Helmsley Castle. There is a small vegetarian Vinehouse Cafe but avoid market day on a Friday as we had to tour around to find a parking space! Suitable for Children and Family viewing

The garden you visit today is the result of a great deal of hard work over a long period of time by a large number of volunteers, friends, supporters and staff. Individuals have moved on but the garden ethos remains. It has always sought to retain serenity, be a reflective space and use gardening for its restorative qualities.
As an old gardener once said to me 'Sometimes I sits and thinks, and other times I just sits'. Whatever your reason for visiting us we expect and hope you to take pleasure from the garden.

where the HECK is HELMSLEY??
WHERE THE HECK IS HELMSLEY?! It's in North Yorkshire!! Spent the day and night with my friend Abby in Helmsley, exploring what this little North Yorkshire town has to offer. We went to the castle, and things got a bit messy (SURPRISE SURPRISE!)

Richmond Castle North Yorkshire
Visited last October, Richmond Castle is located on the eastern edge of the Yorkshire Dales and sits high above the River Swale. It stands in the middle of the market town of Richmond. It is one of the finest Norman castles in Britain and only two stone built castles in England are equal in age to it and they are at Colchester and Durham.
Richmond castle has had a long and varied history, beginning with the Norman invasion in 1066 and the building of the Castle commenced in 1071 as a military stronghold on land gifted to Alan the Red of Brittany by William the Conqueror as reward for his part in the victory over King Harold. King William the Lion of Scotland was imprisoned in Richmond Castle, as was David II after his defeat in 1346. Charles I also lodged in the castle during his journey south in 1647 after he had surrendered to the Scots.
