Hemis National Park, Leh, Ladakh, India (2016)
Hemis National Park (or Hemis High Altitude National Park) is a high altitude national park in the eastern Ladakh region of the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India. World famous for being the best place to see the snow leopard in the wild, it is believed to have the highest density of snow leopards of any protected area in the world.
It is the only national park in India north of the Himalayas, the largest notified protected area in India (and thus the largest national park of India), and is the second largest contiguous protected area after the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve and surrounding protected areas. The park is home to a number of species of endangered mammals including the snow leopard. Hemis National Park is India's only protected area inside the Palearctic ecozone, outside the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary northeast of Hemis, and the proposed Tso Lhamo Cold Desert Conservation Area in North Sikkim.
The park is bounded on the north by the banks of the Indus River, and includes the cachements of Markha, Sumdah and Rumbak, and parts of the Zanskar Range.

Incredible, rare footage of the elusive 'ghost of the mountains'.
The snow leopard is an endangered big cat native to the mountain ranges of Central and South Asia. India is home to about 500 - 700 of the global snow leopard population. The snow leopard is known as the 'ghosts of the mountains' because of its solitary and elusive nature. Spotters often go months or even years without seeing a single one.
But Chitta Dorjey has been tracking snow leopards for over 18 years. With a simple spotting scope and a mobile camera, Chitta follows the trail of the snow leopards, capturing them on film. He's even captured snow leopards mating on camera, an event most spotters never even see.

Footage of a snow leopard climbing a 15,000 ridge, and marking her scent numerous times. She was far away, and footage is cropped, but still amazing to watch how she navigates on this super rugged, rocky spine, using her long tail for balance. What beautiful animals.

The Alpine ibex (Capra ibex), also known as the steinbock or bouquetin, is a species of wild goat that lives in the mountains of the European Alps. It is a sexually dimorphic species with larger males who carry larger, curved horns. The coat colour is typically brownish grey. Alpine ibex tend to live in steep, rough terrain above the snow line. They are also social, although adult males and females segregate for most of the year, coming together only to mate. Four distinct groups exist; adult male groups, female-offspring groups, groups of young individuals, and mixed sex groups.
During the breeding season, males fight for access to females and use their long horns in agonistic behaviours. After being extirpated from most areas by the 19th century, the Alpine ibex was successfully reintroduced to parts of its historical range and all individuals living today descend from the stock in Gran Paradiso National Park in Aosta Valley and from the neighbouring French valley of Maurienne,[2] now part of the Vanoise National Park linked to the former. These two national parks are connected and have been specially created to help the ibex to thrive. The ibex is the emblem of both the Gran Paradiso National Park and the Vanoise National Park. The species is currently listed as of least concern by the IUCN.(Wiki)

Stone Marten in Hemis National Park
This species is not so rare, but is not frequently seen because it's nocturnal. Here in the Himalayas, you have to be very determined to see one of these guys, as temperatures plunge down to sometimes -40 at night. (-40°C = -40°F, did you know?)
The wind certainly doesn't help either, as does the fact that nature is unpredictable and no animal is ever guaranteed to show up when you're looking for it. But the marten likes to sneak into camp when everyone is sleeping and munch on the biodegradable trash that is compiled at the edge of the campsite.

We saw this marmots at the Hemis National Park on our way to the Pangong Lake.
