Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve
HENDERSON BIRD VIEWING PRESERVE
It's 5am, it's just above freezing and the wind is practically tearing our faces off. Who wakes up this early to drive out to old water reclamation ponds to look at birds? We do!
On a cold Saturday morning in January, in the Mojave Desert just outside of Las Vegas, several friends and I paid a visit to the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve. I had been asked to tag along, maybe even bring a camera for a brisk walk around the Preserve. I had never even heard of this place before. And a water treatment facility turned bird sanctuary? That's so Vegas. Really it is!
This time of year, there was a copious amount of ducks swimming and feeding in and around the ponds. A friend pointed out a raft of ducks called Shoveler Ducks. They call'em shoveler ducks because they got a long broad bill and they scoop up vegetation when they dive. They 'shovel' things up, he told me. I was hoping to see a wider variety of birds, but I guess that means I'll have to come back out in the spring during nesting. We did get a short glimpse of a coyote and I think there was a reported golden eagle sighting as well. No pictures... didn't happen.
I love doing stuff like this in Vegas. It's a great alternative to what Vegas is known for. It's a great example of the marriage between natural conservatory efforts and essential water practices inherent with desert living. That's what makes it so Vegas!

Free Admission Visit to Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve
This is one of our favorite spots to visit. Today was especially nice because of the amount and variety of ducks that we observed. One of the best things about this free to the public Preserve is that they lend binoculars if you do not own any. So, take a look at this amazing locale....And when you can stop by. Just make sure to verify their hours before venturing as they vary.

Hi! I'm Dani. My channel is made just for fun to get me out of the house, go on adventures, and discover new things. My content will mostly be about Las Vegas history and modern attractions since that's where I live. I don't intend to be a review channel, I just love to explore. I might head to a resort, a tourist spot, a historic site, or a random roadside attraction. I will do my best to get my information correct. I also try to keep things positive and friendly for viewers of all ages. I travel frequently to Los Angeles and Disneyland. Hopefully, I will be traveling to more places in the near future. Thanks for watching!

Birds at Spring (Hidden Forest Cabin @ Desert National Wildlife Refuge, Las Vegas Nevada)
Shot with GoPro (R5 @ 1080p HD at 30fps).
Taken 6/25/12 at 6 am. The birds swarm to this small spring because it is the only running water in the area (i.e. the site is smack in the middle of the Las Vegas Valley. A parched Mohave desert terrain... except for this 'hidden' forest parcel with a 100 yr. old cabin on-site!).
Because of it's exclusivity, it is a really hot spot for birding! However, you do have a hike (almost 11 miles round trip) to get here (for more info:

US Birding Roadtrip slideshow - Part I
A true solo project from the winter 2006. I left Sweden on Jan 26 and arrived in Phoenix AZ early in the evening. I went down to the southeastern corner the first days. Then I headed straight north, for Sedona Red Rocks but mainly Grand Canyon. After that I went straight west, planning on doing tourist things at Hoover Dam and Las Vegas, too. The fates had other plans, I got a flat tire a few km from Hoover Dam and got stuck for a few hours. After the donut wheel got on I limped to Las Vegas for a car change at Alamo Car Rental at the airport. Made a short stop at a free overview parking space at Hoover Dam, though. The Alamo in Vegas was ridiculously hard to find and the hours for tourism in LV shrunk to nothing before my mission was accomplished. So I fled Sin City and spent the night at an motel in Armpitville, not far south from Death Valley.
