Hengchun Old Town (Near Kenting National Park, Taiwan)
Hengchun / 恆春 is located within Kenting National Park and is the gateway to the tropical beach resorts and night markets of Kenting, therefore it is one of the most well known tourist towns in Taiwan. The city itself was once completely surrounded by a city wall; now about half of the wall remains intact, as well as the four city gates. On weekends, the streets of nearby Kenting are filled with cars and tour buses.
The Hengchun Old Town / 恆春古城 is one of the best-preserved historical towns in Taiwan with four gates intact and about half of the walls remaining. It was built during the Qing Dynasty in the 1st year of the Guangxu Era (1875) and completed in 1879. It has a north, east, south, and west gate and the outer circumference of the moat measures 880 zhang (about 2,700 m or 8,800 ft). In 1988, an actual measurement of the length was conducted, showing that the length in total amount to 2,550 meters (8,370 ft).
The peak season of tourism in Hengchun usually lasts from April to late October when daytime temperatures are usually hot, while the off season lasts from November to March of the following year, with the exception of the week of the Chinese New Year holiday which usually takes place during late January or February, when large amount of tourist from around the whole country, mostly from Northern Taiwan travels to Hengchun and Kenting for the peninsula's warm weather.
The township was served by Hengchun Airport, with domestic flights from Taipei Songshan Airport in Taipei. Scheduled flights ceased in 2014.
On December 26, 2006, a 7.0–7.2 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter off the southwest coast of Taiwan occurred (approximately 22.8 km southwest of Hengchun). It caused damage to many houses in Hengchun, including fifteen historical buildings in the historic center of the township.

Tourism in Hengchun has slowed over the past two years, and the homestay sector has been hit hard. One homestay operator is holding out an unusual inducement to get tourists to stop by this balmy paradise at the tip of Pingtung. To any party of six people, he is offering two-night stays at his guest accommodation free of charge, with no strings attached.This is a homestay in Hengchun. The whole building is available. Guests get the run of the living room, dining room, and three rooms on the top floor. And now, a stay here can be free.Chang I-huaHomestay operatorIt''s completely free of charge to parties of six that book a two-night weekday stay. Don''t look at this in terms of good or bad deal. The idea is that we welcome guests to stay here. This is sweetening the pot for tourists. We are throwing out a minnow to catch a whale.The number of tourists to Kenting has dropped off sharply over the last two years, bringing down the tourism industry of the entire Hengchun Peninsula. In a bid to attract guests, some homestay operators are joining a new government scheme to offer their rooms at deep discounts. South Coast
Between the Maobitou peninsula on the west and Eluanbi peninsula on the east, this is Kenting’s most popular tourist area, with a high concentration of beaches and resorts as well as restaurants, bars, cafes, and boutiques.
Nanwan, or South Bay, is in the crook where Maobitou and the main body of the Hengchun Peninula meet. This is the best and most popular locale for inshore frolicking—swimming, windsurfing, jet-skiing, kayaking, banana-boating, skin-diving, snorkeling, what have you. There are change rooms, showers, and shops renting all necessary gear/toys. Adding to Nanwan’s allure is the fact it is second only to nearby Kending town, which we visit next, for restaurants and watering holes.
Kending is fun-central in the park. This is where all the action happens at night. Highway 26 does double-duty as the town’s main street, and as the sun retires over the western horizon each day local residents don vendors’ hats and line both sides with food stalls. Backing them are scores of bricks-and-mortar enticements, with everything from cafes, bars, and restaurants to indie-designer jewelry and crafts shops. On the town’s eastern edge are some especially entertaining sights – small lorries which, once the shutters on the back cabins are lowered, magically become bars and pizzerias. Owners set up seating alongside. The former are stocked to “the rafters” with famous spirits brands, and the latter have flatbed-mounted brick pizza ovens.
Off Kending’s eastern end, in a pretty sheltered cove, is the Xiaowan (“Small Bay”) beach, directly across Highway 26 from two of the park’s resort-hotel queens, one of these the Howard Beach Resort (see Box). During the day a wide range of watersports equipment is available for rent at the beach. At night, after the water-focused fun ceases, the wide-deck wood-theme café/eatery here transforms into a mellow open-air bar, ’70s rock complementing the soothing music of arriving waves.
East of Kending is Banana Bay, site of a miniscule fishing harbor. On either side of its cement breakwater walls is easily accessible upraised-coral shoreline, beyond which is an underwater world popular with divers.
Nearby iconic park attractions are Shadao and Sail Rock. The first is a magnificent 300m stretch of protected beach that actually shines. In the on-site exhibition hall, it’s said this is Taiwan’s purest shell-sand; the coast makes a dramatic 90-degree turn here, meaning materials are washed in and churned but not easily washed out. Sail Rock is a towering 18m-high slab of exposed coral offshore said either to resemble a Chinese imperial war junk or US President Richard Nixon’s profile. But what I see is a Kenting angelfish.

Kenting, Hengchun and Taitung are the hardest hit areas
Tembin wreaked havoc on the southern resort town of Kenting and nearby Hengchun. Kenting's normally crowded streets were deserted with people trying to avoid the storm. Taitung was also experiencing extremely dangerous winds.
