20th annual Spring Festival of Heritage Farm Museum and Village
Heritage Farm Museum and Village of Huntington, WV, remembered its past and celebrated its future at its 20th Spring Festival on May 7, 2016. Audy Perry, owner of the Smithsonian-affiliated living history museum, said he was doubtful anyone in his family knew the festival would grow from one barn and general store 20 years ago to a village filled with dozens of handmade log cabins and activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Clover Archaeological site near Huntington,WV
The Clover Site was a Fort Ancient type village located on the Ohio River about 20 miles north of Huntington,WV. The site is currently on the old plantation of Civil War General Albert Jenkins which is owned by the State of WV as a historic site. The vid includes some scenes from Jenkins Plantation as well as showing some of the reconstructed wetland in the area which would have been vital to the original Clover Ft. Ancient Culture village. The second part of the vid shows a diorama of a Ft. Ancient village and the final segment consists of some necklaces and other atrifacts found not far from the site that are also presumed to be Ft. Ancient relics but it can't be certain, since the dates of the finds were not available to some of these digs which occured in the 1860's. Anyways you can contemplate the power that the person wearing these necklaces must have felt. You can well see the different ecological zones that this village encompassed-high woodlands, river floodplains, wetlands-zones that were critical to the life support of nature worshippers. Thank you for watching!

The Blue Ride Parkway
The Blue Ridge Parkway, Americas Favorite Drive, will be celebrating its 75th Birthday in 2010. Started in the 1930s as a Depression-era public works project, it took over fifty years to complete. This highway, noted for its beautiful scenic views, meanders through the Blue Ridge Mountains for 469.1 miles from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to U.S. 441 at Oconaluftee in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Cherokee, North Carolina. For seventeen miles it winds its way through Floyd County, one of the most beautiful and photographed areas of the parkway.
There is no fee for using the parkway and it is a favorite destination for many travelers for many reasons. Along the parkway can be found plenty of opportunities to stop, eat, stretch, visit restrooms and exhibits, hike, fish or view wildlife. Historic sites and buildings, each with its own unique history, are found all along the parkway giving the traveler opportunities to be transported back in time as they explore the cultural heritage of the area while enjoying the spectacular natural views.
The parkway is an excellent destination for birdwatchers. The Appalachian Mountains are along the flyway for most eastern migratory birds. Photographers also will find an abundance of unique photographic opportunities. Hikers and horseback riders, as well as wildflower and history enthusiast will find what they are looking for along Americas Favorite Drive.
Some points of interest in Floyd County include:
Milepost 120.4 - Enjoy a 3.7-mile side trip to Roanoke Mountain. Roanoke is where the Great Wagon Road branched south into North Carolina and west into Kentucky, the route of many an Appalachian settler.
Milepost 154 - The Trail Cabin, circa 19th-century, represents the isolation of mountain residents. The location has been described as spectacular!
Milepost 176.2 - Mabry Mill is not to be missed. Explore the mill, a blacksmith shop, wheelwright's and a whiskey still. Demonstrations take place spring through fall.
Milepost 189 - The Puckett Cabin, also 19th-century, was the home of Mrs. Orleana Hawks Puckett, a mid-wife.

Be Prepared for your Parkway Tour
It is a good idea to always travel with emergency supplies, especially when traveling the parkway. Weather conditions in the mountains can contrast greatly from the surrounding valleys or the piedmont region. Be sure to monitor the local forecasts and be prepared for situations that can arise from vehicle trouble to sever weather conditions.

Huntington is a city in Cabell and Wayne counties in the U.S. state of West Virginia, located at the confluence of the Guyandotte River and the Ohio River. The City of Huntington was founded as the western terminus of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in 1871 upon agricultural homesteads, and is eponymously named for the railroad's founder Collis Potter Huntington. The first identifiable permanent settlement, Holderby's Landing, was founded in 1775 in what was then the Colony of Virginia, but the area had been sparsely settled by French as early as 1609. Most of the city is in Cabell County, for which it is the county seat.[5](Wikipedia 2016)

A. Michael & Henriella Perry Receive Donald R. Myers Humanitarian Award
Perrys receive humanitarian award
February 28, 2010 @ 09:50 PM
BILL ROSENBERGER
The Herald-Dispatch
HUNTINGTON -- Mike and Henriella Perry, owners of the Heritage Farm Museum and Village, were presented with the Donald R. Myers Humanitarian Award Sunday night in Virginia.
The award recognizes individuals who through their meritorious contributions of leadership and community service have enriched Appalachia.
Recipients are characterized as leading growth and development in Appalachia, enhancing their local communities and reinforcing Appalachian values.
The Perrys said they are humbled to have been nominated for an award that had been given only twice previously by the Development District Association of Appalachia. The first time was to Bob Evans in 2007 (just a month after his death), and the second was to Alabama lead singer Randy Owen in 2009.
To say we're elated is an understatement, Mike Perry said. It validates the farm and what we're trying to do.
The Perrys were nominated by the West Virginia Region II Planning and Development Council.
Michael and Henriella Perry have devoted their lives to telling, what they believe is the untold story, of the settling of Appalachia, the nomination letter states. They have spent a lifetime collecting antique equipment, furniture and memorabilia, followed by years of constructing a museum village to exhibit how Appalachian pioneers lived and sustained their families.
Both Henriella and Mike have been willing (and) helping hands in the community and most especially in their church.
The award was presented to the Perrys Sunday night at a dinner at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Crystal City, Va.
Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., sent a letter congratulating the Perrys and recognizing their importance to the preservation of Appalachian history.
The reconstruction and preservation of the life and culture of the early settlers of Appalachia at the Perry's Heritage Farm and Museum enable one to experience how Appalachian pioneers lived, worked and raised families, the letter from Byrd states. As they have done in all aspects of their lives, the Perrys have performed an invaluable service in preserving this important time in Appalachia's, and our nation's, history.
Gov. Joe Manchin also made a personal phone call to offer his appreciation and congratulations to the Perrys.
For Mike and Henriella to be honored at that level, it speaks volumes about the type of people we have in West Virginia, and Mike and Henriella are right at the top, Manchin added in a statement. What they have done with the farm and museum for Huntington, for West Virginia and the entire Appalachian region is remarkable. I am so proud and so excited for them to receive this distinguished award.
The Perrys said all the kind words are just too much. They said the award is about the museum, which takes a lot of volunteers and specialists to make it the unique spot that it is.
It's not a museum just collecting relics or that we want to return to the good old days, because they weren't that good, Mike Perry said. But the people were fantastic. What's to be ashamed of? My ancestors did it all in a self-sufficient manner.
The roots of the farm and museum were planted when the Perrys, married for 51 years, decided to start collecting antiques and then in 1973 decided to sell their brick home on Huntington's South Side and move with their daughters and son into a log farm house in Harveytown, just over the Wayne County line.
About 15 years ago, a cornfield started to become what is now the main street of Heritage Farm. They started bringing in log buildings from other places, by disassembling them, transporting the parts and reassembling them here.
Heritage Farm now has a zoo with animals like pigs, llamas, donkeys, rabbits and turtles. It has a Progress Building with thousands of antiques used through the centuries. It has kitchen displays from different eras, a spinning wheel to show how thread was made, old printing presses and an old fashioned soda shop, complete with sundaes made of wax.
