Higgins Boat
The Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel (LCVP) or Higgins boat was a landing craft used extensively in amphibious landings in World War II. The craft was designed by Andrew Higgins of Louisiana, United States, based on boats made for operating in swamps and marshes. More than 20,000 were built, by Higgins Industries and licensees.
Typically constructed from plywood, this shallow-draft, barge-like boat could ferry a platoon-sized complement of 36 men to shore at 9 knots (17 km/h). Men generally entered the boat by climbing down a cargo net hung from the side of their troop transport; they exited by charging down the boat's bow ramp.

Operation Inland Seas (1960) - Part 1
The St. Lawrence Seaway opened in 1959, allowing large ships to transit from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. That summer, the U.S. Navy launched Operation Inland Seas, a massive public relations tour of the lakes by ships from the Atlantic Fleet. This 1960 documentary, narrated by Glenn Ford, tells the story. Source: Naval History and Heritage Command, Photographic Section, UM-23.

USAF Departing
CHAPTER MARKERS are available under Show more tab of Description field.
So there it was, Monday, September 13th, 2010, at 8am and I was hoping to capture video of six P-38 Lightnings on their way from the California Capital Airshow to the Reno Air Races. Five P-38s had departed Chino the week before and number six would hopefully arrive from Oregon -- it turned out about the same time word was being passed about the gathering of P-38s that a portion of the funding evaporated.
One of the planes from Chino, 23 Skidoo, landed at Fresno to repair a cracked cylinder head while four made it to Mather Field outside of Sacramento. Two P-38s had departed Mather by the time I got there Monday morning. Number three departed Mather around 10am headed eastward. Number four was still at Mather when I departed around 2pm.
What a fantastic set of USAF departures I got though:
00:02 C-17 Globemaster III
01:02 C-130 Hercules -- note the vapor trail off the propeller tips!
01:23 F-15 Eagle
01:40 KC-135 Stratotanker
02:25 U-2 Dragon Lady
04:05 KC-10 Extender
05:04 T-38 Talon
05:22 C-5 Galaxy
06:58 F-22 Raptor
07:14 B-52 Stratofortress
And from another airport on another day, a very rare

The P-38 Glacier Girl was at Reno when I arrived Tuesday morning. 23 Skidoo arrived from Fresno around 6pm on Thursday. I heard one of the P-38s flew out from Texas pretty much on their own dime rather than disappoint expectant WW-II veterans. Bottom line, see if you can find a way to say thank you to the crews of these aircraft for their great effort!

Researchers say they have located the wreckage of a World War II-era US warship that played a critical role in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima before being struck by Japanese torpedoes.
The sinking of the USS Indianapolis remains the US Navy's single worst loss at sea. The fate of its crew - nearly 900 were killed, many by sharks, and just 316 survived - was one of the Pacific war's more horrible tales.
The expedition crew of Research Vessel Petrel, which is owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, said it located the wreckage of the Indianapolis on the floor of the north Pacific Ocean, more than 5,500 metres below the surface, the US Navy said in a news release on Saturday.
To be able to honour the brave men of the USS Indianapolis and their families through the discovery of a ship that played such a significant role in ending World War II is truly humbling, Allen said.

The Indianapolis, with 1,196 sailors and Marines on board, was sailing the Philippine Sea between Guam and Leyte Gulf when two torpedoes from a Japanese submarine struck just after midnight on July 30, 1945. It sank in 12 minutes.
There was no time to send a distress signal, and four days passed before a bomber on routine patrol happened to spot survivors in the water. By the time rescuers arrived, a combination of exposure, dehydration, drowning and constant shark attacks had left only one-fourth of the ship's original number alive.
Over the years numerous books recounted the ship's disaster and its role in delivering key components of what would become the atomic bomb Little Boy to the island of Tinian, the take-off point for the bomber Enola Gay's mission to Hiroshima in August 1945.
The Navy statement said a key to finding the Indianapolis came in 2016 when Richard Hulver, a historian with the Naval History and Heritage Command, determined a new search area. Hulver's research identified a naval landing craft that had recorded a sighting of the Indianapolis the day before it sank. The research team developed a new search area.
The Navy said the 13-person expedition team on the R/V Petrel was surveying the Indianapolis site.

Wreck Dive Landing Craft Makena Maui Hawaii Machine Gun
Video taken in 1983 diving with my 14 year old daughter. The machine gun and many other articles were removed by looters during the next few years.
Because of Hawaii's role as a training site for the U.S. military during World War II, the islands' have a wealth of sunken ships, landing craft and planes, many of which have still not been discovered. The landing craft, which had tracks like tanks, could transport troops from ships onto land, and then drive up onto the beach and farther inland. A number of the landing craft now rest off South Maui, where they sank during training exercises more than 70 years ago, he said.
This was a combat landing area, and they would invade the beaches over and over again.
The wreck sites have historical significance, not just because of the way the war and military presence shaped Hawaii's history, but because the techniques soldiers practiced here, including amphibious landing and naval aviation, were critical to the outcome of the war and forever changed how the modern military would operate.
Both of those were really practiced here in Hawaii, and that's why there's so many of these resources around, he said.
During World War II, before major invasions in the Pacific, U.S. Marine Corps and Army personnel trained in landing craft and assault vehicles along Maui's southern coast from Maalaea Harbor to Ahihi Bay. Overhead, aircraft from the Puunene Naval Air Station on Maui conducted combat practice runs. Amphibious operations and naval aviation proved to be two critical innovations of World War II that ultimately helped the United States triumph in the Pacific.
Developing these tactics was dangerous, and many planes and landing craft, and occasionally the lives of servicemen, were lost around the islands. Today, the legacy of that period can be found in near-shore waters, where sunken aircraft and shipwrecks provide recreational diving sites, as well as habitat for marine species.
The wrecks along the coast are like windows into the past and they remind us of the sacrifices made during World War II, said Hans Van Tilburg, NOAA's maritime heritage coordinator. The information collected during this project will help us better understand this chapter in our history and its significance to the Pacific.
For now, details surrounding the sinking of the assault vehicles near Makena, Maui, and the specific identity of the F6F Hellcat, remain mysteries pending further research. Details will be posted on the project's website as they are available.
