Leadville Home Tour pt.2
At 10,152 feet, it's the United State's highest incorporated city. In addition to the rich mining history, the unique, creative, artistic paint schemes on the Victorian houses and other distinctive house designs create an eclectic array in this small town.
Leadville was home to H.A.W. Tabor, who became almost as famous for leaving his wife and marrying a younger woman as for discovering one of the richest silver strikes in the state. His second wife, Baby Doe Tabor, became the stuff of legends — there's even an opera about her.
Leadville was a very influential boomtown — it was almost named as Colorado's capital city. Well-preserved, Leadville has 70-square city blocks of Victorian buildings, all part of a designated National Historic Landmark District, along with 20-square miles of a preserved mining district. More than 50 buildings date back to the 1870s, including the Tabor Opera House.
Leadville is located in the geographic center of Colorado, on U.S. Hwy. 24, part of the Top of the Rockies Scenic and Historic Byway. The town's paved Mineral Belt Trail offers year-round recreation for bikers, hikers, snowshoers and cross-country skiers.
In winter, head out to Ski Cooper, a great and affordable family ski area; in summer, catch a ride on the Leadville, Colorado & Southern Railroad excursion. And don't miss the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum, a truly fascinating look at the powerful industry and all the metals that helped build the state.
Just 20 miles from the town of Leadville at the base of Independence Pass is the historic Twin Lakes area, where you'll find world-class fishing and some of Colorado's most spectacular lake and peak scenery. Twin Lakes is close to the trailhead of Mount Elbert and the renowned Interlaken Hotel historical site. It's a true small-town American West experience.

2016 State Honor Award - Como Depot
The Como Depot and the adjoining hotel and roundhouse are collectively listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The first reference to the Depot was in June 1879 when the Denver South Park and Pacific Railroad tracks reached the new town of Como. The building was extended twice shortly thereafter and in 1885 moved approximately 15 feet to the south. It served the valley for over 50 years and the last passenger train came through Como in April 1937. In 1938, the tracks were removed. Photographic evidence suggests that the Depot received little maintenance during the railroad days, and even less afterwards. By 2006, the building was dilapidated and in danger of collapse, which led to to its listing as one of Colorado’s Most Endangered Places.
The Depot changed hands in February 2008 and a group of interested parties formed to spearhead restoration of the building. Colorado Preservation, Inc. managed grant funds from the State Historical Fund, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, CDOT and other local and national contributions to aid in restoration efforts. Since 2008 major progress has been made – the building is structurally restored and the focus is now the interpretation of the site and the town. The Como Depot is leased to the Denver
South Park and Pacific Historical Society and has reopened as a seasonal museum.
Colorado and southern 9 at rotary snowplow park in Breckinridge, Colorado
Part 3 of MrBNSFtrain's Colorado 2013 vacation.
I visited Colorado and Southern 9 the same day I saw the California Zephyr in Glenwood Canyon. We stayed the night in Frisco, Colorado (where I thought the St. Louis and San Francisco railroad was from). We visited the museum park in Frisco, and i asked if there was a railroad depot in town. There wasn't, but they told us about the engine in nearby Breckinridge.
The engine on display was Colorado and Southern 9, a narrow gauge 2-6-0, along with a rotary snowplow and box car.
Everything else is explained in the video.

DSP&P Como Depot Restored
The Denver, South Park, & Pacific Railroad Depot stood on the verge of collapse when it was listed on the Colorado's Most Endangered Places list in 2006. That listing caught the attention of preservationists, who joined with the new owners of the property to work to restore the building to its former glory. Now, 8 years later, the depot stands ready to open back up to the public, where its owners look to operate it as a museum adjacent to their bed and breakfast in the old railroad hotel (currently undergoing a renovation of its own as of this writing).
POWERING THE WEST IN BLM COAL COUNTRY
Coal mining is an important use on public lands and helps meet America’s energy needs. It is a strong economic driver both locally and nationally – for many rural communities, this is particularly true. The Trapper Mine near Craig, Colorado plays a vital role in the town’s economy, providing good paying jobs for members of the local community. BLM staff in the Little Snake Field Office work closely with mine operators to ensure coal development takes place in an environmentally responsible manner.

Shoenberg Farms Westminster, Colorado
This historical structure move took place in Westminster, Colorado. This complex will be used for retail, community fine arts and an industrial arts center. This farm complex began in 1911 as the tuberculosis milk and egg supply for National Jewish Hospital in Denver. Mr. Louis S Shoenberg (Beaumont) moved from Ohio to Leadville, Colorado in the 1870's, where he became a business partner with Mr. David May. After accumulating wealth in Leadville and in the May clothing store partnership, he devoted much of his life to philanthropic pursuits. I taped and produced the structure move that took place on April 2, 2008. The final DVD presentation has a duration of 40+ minutes. This moving outfit specializes in moving historical structures.

Rio Grande Southern Galloping Geese in Colorado; Ridgway, Dolores & Golden
On a recent trip to Colorado we came across 6 of these unique vehicles in three different locations.
First at Ridgeway Railroad Museum there was a replica of No. 1 which transported our group up and down a short length of track. No. 4 was also there which I believe has now moved under it's own power for the 1st time in years. Check out Ridgeway Railroad Museum's website for more info
Second we called at Dolores where No. 5 gave us a short (50 yard) journey.
Finally we called at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden where we enjoyed a 3 circuit trip aboard No. 7. They also have Nos 2 and 6 arranged around the turntable.
We were very grateful to the members of all three locations in being there to give us rides.
I've included some stills at the end of the video of all 6 that we saw including the non-movers

SUMMARY
=======
Colorado ( (listen), other variants) is a state of the Western United States encompassing most of the southern Rocky Mountains as well as the northeastern portion of the Colorado Plateau and the western edge of the Great Plains. It is the 8th largest geographically and 21st most populous U.S. state. The estimated population of Colorado was 5,607,154 on July 1, 2017, an increase of 11.49% since the 2010 United States Census. The state was named for the Colorado River, which early Spanish explorers named the Río Colorado for the ruddy silt the river carried from the mountains. The Territory of Colorado was organized on February 28, 1861, and on August 1, 1876, U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant signed Proclamation 230 admitting Colorado to the Union as the 38th state. Colorado is nicknamed the Centennial State because it became a state one century after the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence.
Colorado is bordered by Wyoming to the north, Nebraska to the northeast, Kansas to the east, Oklahoma to the southeast, New Mexico to the south, Utah to the west, and touches Arizona to the southwest at the Four Corners. Colorado is noted for its vivid landscape of mountains, forests, high plains, mesas, canyons, plateaus, rivers, and desert lands. Colorado is part of the western and southwestern United States, and is one of the Mountain States.
Denver is the capital and most populous city of Colorado. Residents of the state are known as Coloradans, although the antiquated term Coloradoan is occasionally used.Unlike its neighbors to the north, west and east, Colorado has been recognized as a strongly socially liberal state. Same-sex marriage in Colorado has been legal since 2014, and it was the second state in the U.S. (after Washington) to legalize recreational cannabis. The state is known for its progressive views on abortion and assisted suicide; Coloradans rejected a 2008 referendum that would have criminalized abortion, and approved a measure in 2016 that legalized assisted suicide in the state, and remains one of six states (along with the District of Columbia) to have legalized assisted suicide. In 2018, Colorado became the first state in the United States to elect an openly gay governor, Jared Polis, in the 2018 gubernatorial election.

2002 - Bradford Perley House
Residence of Major Robert Boyles Bradford, a prominent Denver pioneer who founded the Bradford Wagon Road, a principal route in the 1860s from Denver to Leadville and South Park. Located in present-day Ken Caryl Ranch, a suburb southwest of Denver. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Previously considered an eyesore in the midst of a spectacular open space park, increased knowledge of the site’s significance created support for its preservation. The Ken Caryl Ranch Master Association and the State Historical Fund helped fund development of a site assessment and plan. In 2004, the Ken Caryl Ranch Master Association, the State Historical Fund, the Gates Family Foundation, the John B. and Mildred Holmes Foundation, the Boettcher Foundation, and others funded the structural stabilization to develop the site as an outdoor theater and interpretive education center. The site had been used as a laboratory for archaeology students from Metropolitan State College, the Colorado School of Mines, and the University of Denver. The project earned the Stephen H. Hart Award for excellence in preservation from the Colorado Historical Society in 2004. (Saved)
