Upholding His Mum's Carrot Cake As A Legacy In Heritage George Town
Location:
Come over to Penang and experience the UNESCO heritage site of George Town. While you are there do find time to experience a heritage street food right on the street of George Town. But this one is different because it is a legacy carried on by a son.
This video showcases a char koay kak or fried carrot cake Penang-style that has been at the same spot for over 63 years. The young man you see frying the carrot cake is holding the legacy of this street food, a proud legacy from his mother. Together with his aunty, he runs the stall and is the new breed of stall operators who keep the street food heritage of Penang young and lively and therefore keeping on his mother's legacy. He still uses the same frying pan, fired by raw wood, and serves it hot on the same spot that since it started. Look up the other street food discovery videos on this channel on George Town's street food legacies.

BEST Food in Malaysia - ULTIMATE STREET FOOD TOUR in Penang | George Town
Asam Laksa, Char Koay Teow, Cendol, Ais Tingkap, Pasembur, Wantan Mee and more... I try it all!!! If you don't try street food while visiting George Town (Penang Island, Malaysia), then you haven't been there; it's a must! The Penang cuisine is ranked as one of the best in Asia. Furthermore, Penang, with George Town being the absolute epicentre, has also been voted as the number one culinary destination in 2014 (by Lonely Planet).
Penang food is influenced by several Asian countries, mainly India and China, and therefore, is a mix of traditional Malay, Indian and Chinese dishes with Char Koay Teow and Asam Laksa being the most famous dishes. Asam Laksa has even made it to the World's 50 best foods compiled by CNN travel.
There's more to Penang food than just the eating; the atmosphere contributes to the amazing experience. Watching the food being prepared and cooked amid the bustling streets of the beautiful historical core of George Town (UNESCO World Heritage Site), not to mention the sounds and smells, plays an important role in the experience.
That being said, in this episode, you will be joining me for a full day of eating incredible street food in the food capital of Malaysia. I've also included the cost of each dish/meal to provide you with a somewhat relevant answer to the question: how expensive is Malaysia?ENJOY!
Lastly, George Town is a beautiful city with wonderful people. George Town exceeded my expectations and, as of today, I hold it as one of my all-time favourite destinations for sure.
FYI: this is the fourth episode in English. My English speaking skills are far from flawless so bear with me :) My channel name, Matvraket, is Swedish for the glutton.

Penang | Malaysia Food Tour Series [Ep 1]
Penang is the home to wonderful history, friendly locals and delicious meals. A definite attraction in northern Malaysia, Penang is represents a mixture of traditional and modern culture. What is really synonym with Penang is the food! Ask Malaysians and many would have traveled to Penang just to savour the delicious meals.
It was a pity that I only managed to feature a few places and I bet others will tell that one stall is better than the other. But you see, that IS Penang. Too much good food! We just cannot name the best. I personally had a great time eating Nasi Kandar, Roti Canai, Cendol, Curry Mee, Fried Oyster with Eggs and the famous Asam Laksa. Come join me in my next food tour by SUBSCRIBING!

Malaysia is known for it's amazing food and Penang is possibly the heart of that! So we decided to do a Penang Street Food Tour and get some local hawker food in Georgetown with 'Food Tour Malaysia' ⬇ Click 'Show More' to expand ⬇
This day in Penang was all thanks to Food Tour Malaysia, check them out here if you'd like to do a similar tour - they were awesome:
Trying Malaysian food as been really interesting as we travel, taking the food tour was actually the coolest way we could have done it. We go to hawker markets and eat at street food stalls ourselves but you never really learn anything or understand the story behind it. Our tour guide, Kevin, was awesome and as we made our way around Penang we learnt a lot about Malaysian history unique to Georgetown - it was a cool way to travel.
Thanks for watching this vlog, if you do come to Malaysia be sure to reach out to these guys and look into a Penang street food tour.

A taste of migration: Penang's multi-culinary heritage - Street Food
Penang, the island-state off the northwestern coast of Peninsular Malaysia, is a melting pot of cultures, ethnicities, traditions and religions.
As a historical trading port, life there has been determined by migration for hundreds of years, and ethnic Malays, Indians and Chinese live together side by side - leading to a unique mix of cultures and food.
Each of them respect each other's religion, each other's customs and their habits. In Malaysia, we have this word called tolerance. You have to tolerate each other in order to live in harmony, says Teresa Pereira Capol, a Heritage Trust guide.
For many of Penang's residents, food has evolved to become an art form, a social spectacle, a live display of one's ethnic roots. But for most of the street vendors, life is harsh and working hours are long. They continue their trade just as their ancestors did, often in the same street their relatives once occupied. Yet they remain proud of this heritage.
We don't want changes .... We want to keep the everyday life ... the cultures, the way of life, the traditions that come with it, [we want to] keep it all intact, says Capol.
But changes are occurring and many of the homes are disappearing. Development has been inevitable, yet the architecture of the past also needs to be preserved.
Heritage is not just the buildings and the roads, heritage is actually the people, the people's lifestyle, way of life, the ambience of a city - and that should be preserved, says Dato Kee Phaik Cheen.
Al Jazeera wanders the streets of Penang to explore the island through its unique food, history and people.
Editor's note: This film was first broadcast on Al Jazeera English in 2008.
Celebrity Chee Cheong Fun In George Town
Location:
203-225, Lebuh Kimberley, George Town, 10200 George Town, Pulau Pinang
The food paradise of Penang's George Town is a must for foodies on the island. Here is a video update on one of the most famous street food along the busy Lebuh Kimberly. This husband and wife chee cheong fun stall has been around for over four decades and the crowd still comes to taste the difference. Indeed, over the years this stall has been featured on food channels and also visited by many artists from all over. Not much need to be said or describe the stall's serving. Fresh, charcoal steamed warm chee cheong fun comes with a mix of three sauces and sesame seeds. The smooth and white chee cheong fun slides into your mouth to bring out a concoction of flavours from the mix of sauces. For takeaways he will recommend not to get it steamed. Watch this video update and see how this stall remains eternal all these years. Don't forget to watch the other food discovery videos on this food paradise on this channel!

Street food penang in Malaysia PENANG 5 Great Hawker Centres in Penang Best hawker food courts on the island Hotels Flights Flight + Hotel Things To Do Our list of the 5 Great Hawker Centres in Penang comprises food courts that have concentrations of the best street side food vendors on the island. They are sometimes connected to casual Chinese coffee shops, but most times these open air centres are roadside affairs hosting a varied collection of hawker sellers and plenty of open air seating. Serving up inexpensively priced cuisine that is richly flavoured, they operate at all hours of the day and the reason the food is so good is because these hawkers use age-old family recipes and old fashioned cooking methods. The lifeline to locals and even travellers by helping to keep food budgets low, food presentation is not a priority but quality and freshness is always top notch. Hawkers furiously fry up their specialties which include char kway teow (flat rice noodles with cockles, prawns, chilli and bean sprouts) and chee cheong fun (rice noodle rolls). Expect to sit on colourful plastic tables and chairs on the roadside. Our favourite dish here is congee, a Chinese porridge made with rice instead of oats, which makes for a filling, hearty meal. Flavoured with a variety of side dishes, anything from fresh crab and eggs to pork and ginger chicken, this is basically Chinese comfort food.

Day 2 in Georgetown, Penang, MALAYSIA! We start off our second day in Asia’s food heaven at the Chowrasta Markets, sampling the local fried street food, then heading just across the street to the famed Toh Soon Cafe for a TRADITIONAL Malaysian breakfast like you’ve never seen before! Delicious and smooth Hainan Coffee, creamy half boiled egg and charcoal grilled Kaya Toast is sure to awaken your tastebuds.
After breakfast, we head over to Penang Road for one special stall that sells the best Chendul (Green Jelly Dessert) in all of Malaysia! Cheap, tasty and undeniably refreshing on a hot Malaysian day. After that, a quick stroll down Chulia Street leads us to the Kapitan Keling Mosque, and right outside is the most fragrant and mouth watering Nasi Kandar - an Indian Muslim rice dish filled with so many spices it puts the colonel to shame.
But our journey doesn’t end there! A quick break to the Clan Jetties and Penang, Wonderfood Museum (with huge sculptures of local Penang food) and we’re back eating at the Chulia Street Markets! The Curry Mee (Noodles) here were my absolutely favorite, one of the spiciest noodle dishes I’ve had so far and SO FULL of flavor! We also try Lok Lok, a street food hotpot and finally end our night with some extremely satisfying Wan Tan Mee. Day 2 well spent!

Take a walk around the market and food court at Chowrasta Road in George Town, Penang and you will definitely come across an echo of sizzling oil and ladle clinks and clanks emanating from a stall that serves the famous carrot cake char kuih kak.
