Company Town: Hershey, Pa.
Company towns have often been depicted as locations of worker exploitation. The 1950s song, Sixteen Tons, popularized by Tennessee Ernie Ford (and easily found on the web) reinforces that idea. Hershey, Pennsylvania had a different reputation, however. But it did not escape the labor unrest that swept the U.S. in the 1930s.

PSU board to approve Hershey Med merger with Pinnacle
By: CBS 21 Web Staff
DERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- The Penn State University Board of Trustees are expected to vote Friday to approve a merger between Penn State Hershey Medical Center and Pinnacle Health, which would create the Harrisburg area's largest health system.
The approval is expected to come at an afternoon BOT meeting at the Hershey Lodge in Derry Township.
A committee has already recommended approval for the merger, and with the board's approval, the deal would go to the Federal Trade Commission for its review.
The new system will also include St. Joseph's Regional Health System of Reading, which recently became part of Penn State Hershey Medical Center.
Friday's board of trustees meeting is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
PSU board warned of impact of sexual misconduct, changes recommended
By: The Associated Press and CBS 21 Web Staff
DERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- An administrator who led a task force that recommended Penn State change how it handles sexual assault and misconduct says allegations about a fraternity's secret Facebook page shows the need for school trustees to continue work on those issues.
Vice president for student affairs Damon Sims told the board at a meeting in Hershey on Friday that there may be no more high profile or incendiary issue in higher education today than sexual misconduct.
He said that's illustrated by news this week that police are investigating the Penn State chapter of Kappa Delta Rho over online postings of nude or semi-naked women asleep or passed out.
Sims says the investigation echoes themes schools are encountering nationally. He's warning the board about how sexual misconduct can damage the lives of students.
Sims talked of several recommendations that task force developed to handle and boost the handling of sexual assault at all PSU campuses across the Commonwealth.
Recommendations included the creation of a Title IX coordinator, hiring additional staff, and the designation of all Penn State employees as confidential or responsible when it comes to reporting sexual assault.
Sims said the full time Title IX coordinator should be hired along with additional staff, which includes a prevention and education coordinator, an investigator and deputy coordinator.
Sims also recommended a change to how the hearing processes for sexual assault discipline cases are handled.
Although the hearing model is still used at most schools and has proved effective in managing the garden variety misconduct cases at Penn State, it presents challenges when dealing with sexual assault that should be addressed, Sims said.
The change would shift the process to an investigate model.
The new model will rely on a professional investigator who will conduct the required fact finding and compile a comprehensive and objective report. The report and any written comments added to it by the parties will be shared with a group of faculty and staff members trained for the necessary decision making about responsibility and sanctioning, Sims said.
Sims said the task force decided every PSU employee should be designated as confidential or responsible regarding sexual assault.
Confidential employees will be licensed clinical staff and mental health professionals who will not disclose information about alleged sexual incidents that are reported to them unless the individual making the report gives them permission.
All other employees will be designated responsible and will have the obligation to report to the Title IX coordinator all relevant details that have been disclosed to them about alleged sexual misconduct, including the names of the individuals having the information and the alleged perpetrators, Sims said.
More training of employees will be required before the reporting process would begin, Sims said.
It was recommended by Sims that a campus climate survey be issued to find more insight into student attitudes and understanding about sexual assault and use that data to gather student opinions and compare their reactions to similar schools.
Additionally, an annual public report on sexual misconduct data would be published, Sims said.
Sims warned the board of trustees with those types of recommendations in place the likelihood of sexual assault reports will likely increase in the beginning.
Sexual misconduct remains a significantly under reported offense. Our efforts to raise awareness and communicate the seriousness of our purpose in this area should encourage more reporting, not less, more requests for assistance, not fewer. This is a cost we must be willing to bear, Sims said.
The task force reported the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape found 80 percent of college students who were sexually assaulted were under the influence and the percentage of students subject to sexual misconduct while under the influence was even greater.

SUMMARY
=======
Harrisburg ( HARR-iss-burg; Pennsylvania German: Harrisbarrig) is the capital city of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in the United States, and the county seat of Dauphin County. With a population of 49,192, it is the 15th largest city in the Commonwealth. It lies on the east bank of the Susquehanna River, 107 miles (172 km) west of Philadelphia. Harrisburg is the anchor of the Susquehanna Valley metropolitan area, which had a 2017 estimated population of 571,903, making it the third most populous in Pennsylvania and 96th most populous in the United States.
Harrisburg played a notable role in American history during the Westward Migration, the American Civil War, and the Industrial Revolution. During part of the 19th century, the building of the Pennsylvania Canal and later the Pennsylvania Railroad allowed Harrisburg to become one of the most industrialized cities in the Northeastern United States. The U.S. Navy ship USS Harrisburg, which served from 1918 to 1919 at the end of World War I, was named in honor of the city. In the mid-to-late 20th century, the city's economic fortunes fluctuated with its major industries consisting of government, heavy manufacturing, agriculture, and food services (nearby Hershey is home of the chocolate maker, located just 10 miles (16 km) east).
The Pennsylvania Farm Show, the largest free indoor agriculture exposition in the United States, was first held in Harrisburg in 1917 and has been held there every early-to-mid January since then. Harrisburg also hosts an annual outdoor sports show, the largest of its kind in North America, an auto show, which features a large static display of new as well as classic cars and is renowned nationwide, and Motorama, a two-day event consisting of a car show, motocross racing, remote control car racing, and more. Harrisburg is also known for the Three Mile Island accident, which occurred on March 28, 1979, near Middletown.
In 2010 Forbes rated Harrisburg as the second best place in the U.S. to raise a family. Despite the city's recent financial troubles, in 2010 The Daily Beast website ranked 20 metropolitan areas across the country as being recession-proof, and the Harrisburg region landed at No. 7. The financial stability of the region is in part ...

Pink The Rink 2012
Premiere #1 Limousine Service was proud to participate in the first ever Pink The Rink 2012 at the Hershey GIANT Center. The Hershey Bears in conjunction with Mixed Up Productions and Leslie Gilbert Photography partnered to Pink the Rink in a joint effort to raise funds to support the American Cancer Society.
To kick off the evening, the Derry Township Police Department locked up team mascot Coco outside of the GIANT Center where he collected change in order to be bailed out. Once he was free, Leslie Gilbert Photography gave fans of all ages the opportunity to have their photo taken with Coco throughout the evening.
Mixed Up Productions had special Pink the Rink t-shirts for sale, and a few lucky fans took home a shirt autographed by a BEARS player. Fans were encouraged to wear their shirts during the game to fully pink GIANT Center. After all the t-shirts, megaphones, hats, and pictures were sold, they were able to collect $6,625.00. All of the money raised, went straight to the American Cancer Society.
We wanted to do something out of the ordinary to help our community and to show those diagnosed that we are here to support them, said Mike Miller, owner of Mixed Up Productions. Breast cancer is a serious disease for which we need to find a cure, and we hope an event like Pink the Rink will help us get a little closer to that cure.
The evening finished with a live on-ice auction for the special Breast Cancer Awareness jerseys to be worn by the players, with a portion of the proceeds from the auction going to the American Cancer Society. Pinky, our pink SUV limo, had the privilege of driving Coco out on to the ice between the 1st and 2nd period and also at the end of the game during the live jersey auction.
