After the meal, you will enjoy a relaxing stroll around Ribadesella, an historic fishing port in Northern Spain, now turned into a bohemian coastal town full of charming architecture and a lively atmosphere with plenty of local bars and “sidrerías”, the name for local cider houses.
Enjoy a panoramic walk up to Ribadesella’s lighthouse to contemplate breath-taking views over the ocean and the mountains of Picos de Europa National Park.

Stunning Beaches in Asturias, Spain - San Lorenzo Beach, Playa de Poo, Gulpiyuri Beach
If you're looking for a unique and relaxing beach vacation between mountains and the sea, head to Northern Spain for some of its stunning beaches. See for more beach inspiration.
Playa de San Lorenzo
With enchanting sea views and a seashell shape, Playa de San Lorenzo is the most popular in Gijón. This amazing coastal city is the largest in Asturias and boasts endless entertainment for visitors. The beach is located near the city center and its promenade, called El Muro by locals, extends for over a mile from the Church of San Pedro Apóstol, which shines at night like gold embellishment on the seafront.
Before a stroll on the promenade, head to the Cerro Santa Catalina Park at the top of a hill that starts just behind the church. Enjoy the walk, breath in the fresh air and marvel at the outstanding beach and city views. At the end of the hill lies the Elogio del Horizonte, a bold sea-facing sculpture made by Basque artist Eduardo Chillida. Go inside the sculpture to feel reverberations from the waves while enjoying the impeccable views.
Afterward, stop at the Campo Valdés Roman Baths, right next to the church, to get familiar with Gijón's ancient history.
At the very end of the promenade, lined with hotels, restaurants, bars and shops, there are few small, quieter beaches surrounded by green areas. Where the promenade ends, El Paseo Litoral de San Lorenzo begins, a beachfront path surrounded by nature and a real pleasure for the senses. In the middle of the path you will find another surprise — access to a nudist beach.
Those traveling with children will be energized by the rhythm of the Cantabrian waves — walk a bit further down to find calmer stretches. There is an area designated for surfers, since the Cantabrian Sea is perfect for the sport. Lessons start in the summertime for beginner surfers.
Gijón is a very dynamic, young, sporty and lively city. Its inhabitants are very friendly and it's full of charming spots, amazing cuisine and a lot of entertainment in the summer. Top spots are old town, the picturesque port and Major Square, home to concerts showcasing a variety of musical styles.
Hidden Beaches
Due to its popularity and location, Playa de San Lorenzo is usually quite packed starting at 1 p.m. — get a train, a bus or rent a car to discover more serene beaches just outside the city. Whether you head east or west, you'll stumble across impressive coastal stretches. I recommend two hidden spots east of Gijón.
Playa de Poo
This spotless beach is located at the foot of Picos de Europa, a series of impressive rocky mountain peaks with a height of 8000 feet. It lies at the mouth of the Vallina River near the town of Llanes. When the tide comes in, the sea enters the channel formed over the centuries, resulting in a kind of saltwater pool. This natural phenomenon makes Playa de Poo ideal for families, as bathing here is very safe.
After swimming, sunbathing, relaxing or walking around the surrounding areas, enjoy a wonderful lunch in the restaurant located right at the entrance of the beach. Otherwise, you can explore Poo's village and sample local cuisine.
The beach offers public showers and there are lifeguards in the summer months. There is a small parking lot at the entrance, but many locals open their private properties to provide visitors with additional parking for a nominal fee.
Playa de Gulpiyuri
Ever dream of finding a mysterious half-moon-shaped beach in the middle of a meadow? Mother Nature has created this surprising hidden oasis with crystal-clear saltwater, calming waves and white sand. To reach Playa de Gulpiyuri, the sea flows through a subterranean tunnel, bringing the sand with it to form this unbelievable paradise.
At 40 meters long and 15 wide, it's considered the smallest beach in the world, and is quite a thing to swim across while contemplating nature's purity. For its magnificence, it was declared a natural monument and is also a protected natural area.
To find this treasure, head to the small town of Naves, between Llanes and Ribadesella. It's not exactly easy to locate the beach — if driving, make sure that you bring a GPS. Take the Autovía del Cantábrico motorway and once you arrive at Naves, hop off at exit 313. Otherwise, ask a local — even people from the region take that approach in unfamiliar areas. Paradise isn't always easy to find!
Both Playa de Poo and Playa de Gulpiyuri are backed by cliffs. Embark on a pleasant hike to reach them and experience the breathtaking views that they offer.

Reviews:
A Town Called Hell is a wonderful western that takes place in Mexico, circa 1905. Telly Savalas plays a memorable role as a villain looking for a mysterious man named Augila. There is some good footage of hanging people. Telly Savalas's death scene is hilarious as it is brilliant. Martin Landau plays a jewish/mexican colonel who gets to wear a funny-looking brown mexican uniform, but no beanie. Robert Shaw, known for his classic performance as Quint in Jaws, plays a priest.... or is he? Stella Stevens, a has-been, plays a blond prostitute. There are some good action scenes and Johnny Horton's The Battle Of New Orleans can be heard in the soundtrack in a flashback scene at a mexican dance party. A man hiding underneath a deck tries to obtain a fallen coin above with a stick. A satired attack on a church opens up the film. Everything in it is fabulous. This is a hard to find film, along with 2 other mexican western classics, Blood and Guns and Villa Rides. See it, you'll laugh yourself silly. written by MovieMan-112

PERU: NOVELIST MARIO VARGAS LLOSA RETURNS HOME TO BURY MOTHER
Spanish/Nat
World-famous Peruvian novelist Mario Vargas Llosa has returned to his country from self-imposed exile to bury his mother.
Dora Llosa de Vargas- was buried Thursday after dying from cerebral aneurysm the previous day.
It was the first homecoming for the writer and politician since renouncing his Peruvian citizenship after failing to win the country's Presidency in 1990.
This is the hospital where Dora Llosa de Vargas- the mother of novelist Mario Vargas Llosa spent her last days.
She died Wednesday morning of cerebral aneurysm. She was 81.
Members of the media gathered outside the San Felipe Medical Centre to wait for the arrival of her famous son Mario.
It was the first time the novelist had returned home since renouncing his Peruvian citizenship and leaving for Spain five years ago.
Flowers were sent to the medical centre's chapel where the body of Dora Llosa de Vargas was taken for the vigil.
Vargas Llosa left Peru after losing a presidential bid in 1990.
He has been very critical of the man who beat him - President Alberto Fujimori.
Vargas Llosa refused to talk to journalists upon his arrival at the medical centre.
Dora Llosa de Vargas was buried Thursday morning during a private ceremony attended only by close friends and relatives.
Mario Vargas Llosa is expected to return to Spain in a few days.

SUMMARY
=======
The Spanish Civil War (Spanish: Guerra Civil Española) took place from 1936 to 1939. Republicans loyal to the left-leaning Second Spanish Republic, in alliance with the Anarchists and Communists, fought against the Nationalists, a Falangist, Carlist, Catholic, and largely aristocratic group led by General Francisco Franco. The war has often been portrayed as a struggle between democracy and fascism, particularly due to the political climate and timing surrounding it. In early 1939, the Nationalists achieved victory, and ruled Spain until Franco's death in November 1975.
The war began after a pronunciamiento (a declaration of military opposition) against the Republican government by a group of generals of the Spanish Republican Armed Forces, originally under the leadership of José Sanjurjo. The government at the time was a moderate, liberal coalition of Republicans, supported in the Cortes by communist and socialist parties, under the leadership of centre-left President Manuel Azaña. The Nationalist group was supported by a number of conservative groups, including the Spanish Confederation of Autonomous Right-wing Groups (Confederación Española de Derechas Autónomas, or CEDA), monarchists such as the religious conservative (Roman Catholic) Carlists, and the Falange Española de las Juntas de Ofensiva Nacional Sindicalista (FE y de las JONS), a fascist political party. Sanjurjo was killed in an aircraft accident while attempting to return from exile in Portugal, whereupon Franco emerged as the leader of the Nationalists.
The coup was supported by military units in the Spanish protectorate in Morocco, Pamplona, Burgos, Zaragoza, Valladolid, Cádiz, Córdoba, and Seville. However, rebelling units in some important cities—such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Bilbao, and Málaga—did not gain control, and those cities remained under the control of the government. Spain was thus left militarily and politically divided. The Nationalists and the Republican government fought for control of the country. The Nationalist forces received munitions, soldiers, and air support from Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, while the Republican (Loyalist) side received support from the Soviet Union and Mexico. Other countries, such as the United Kingdom, France, and the United States, continued to recognize the Republican government, but followed an official policy of non-intervention. Notwithstanding this policy, tens of thousands of citizens from non-interventionist countries directly participated in the conflict. They fought mostly in the pro-Republican International Brigades, which also included several thousand exiles from pro-Nationalist regimes.
The Nationalists advanced from their strongholds in the south and west, capturing most of Spain's northern coastline in 1937. They also besieged Madrid and the area to its south and west for much of the war. After much of Catalonia was captured in 1938 and 1939, and Madrid cut off from Barcelona, the Republican military position became hopeless. Madrid and Barcelona were occupied without resistance, Franco declared victory and his regime received diplomatic recognition from all non-interventionist governments. Thousands of leftist Spaniards fled to refugee camps in southern France. Those associated with the losing Republicans were persecuted by the victorious Nationalists. With the establishment of a dictatorship led by General Franco in the aftermath of the war, all right-wing parties were fused into the structure of the Franco regime. The war became notable for the passion and political division it inspired and for the many atrocities that occurred, on both sides. Organized purges occurred in territory captured by Franco's forces so they could consolidate their future regime. A significant number of killings also took place in areas controlled by the Republicans. The extent to which Republican authorities took part in killings in Re ...

More than words | Laura Burian, Miguel Garcia & Barry Olsen | TEDxMonterey
Can you distinguish language translation from language interpretation? In what may be the first ever tri-lingual TEDx talk, Laura Burian, Barry Olsen, and Miguel Garcia demonstrate the power of human cognition as they explain the subtle but important differences between professional translators and interpreters with assistance from Weihao Zhang (Chinese) and Beatriz Rodriguez (Spanish).
Laura Burian is Associate Professor of simultaneous and consecutive interpretation of Chinese and English at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. She has worked as an in-house translator, interpreter, and legal assistant in the Beijing office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, and freelanced as both a translator and interpreter in the US, mainland China, and Taiwan.
Barry Olsen is Assistant Professor of simultaneous and consecutive interpretation of Spanish and Russian at the Monterey Institute and has been working as a conference interpreter and translator since 1993. Over the years he has interpreted for the U.S. State Department, the Inter-American Development Bank, the Organization of American States, National Geographic Society, C-SPAN Television, and many other public and private sector clients.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

AMAZING! 6 Concert Pianists performing together on the same stage for the first time!
When Chanelle Arneson performed her senior piano recital at Evangel University on Tuesday, May 3, she and five of her siblings gave their mother an incredible Mother's Day surprise — her dream gift.
Arneson had planned for the final number on her program to be sung by the Evangel Concert Choir, which would hide the five additional pianos that were being rolled into the recital hall. As soon as the number was over, Arneson presented her mother with a bouquet of roses and said, My mother's dream has always been to see all of her children perform on the same stage. Tonight, six of us are able to give her this gift.
Arneson was joined by three sisters and two brothers to perform an adaptation of Joel Raney's Eight Hands in Praise. The five-hymn medley, originally composed for four pianos, was rearranged to be performed on six pianos by Michelle, Brandon, Rakel, Darrek, Chanelle, and Krystelle Arneson.
The recital, which took place in the Barnett Fine Arts Center Recital Hall, included such works as French Suite No. 5 in G Major by J.S. Bach, Andante Spianato and Grand Polonaise by Frédéric Chopin, Sonata No. 3 in A Minor by Sergei Prokofiev, and Desperate Measures (Paganini Variations) by Robert Muczynski.
Arneson has had a busy week. In addition to the recital, she will graduate from Evangel on Friday (May 6). She has received a graduate assistantship at Texas Christian University, where she plans to pursue a master's degree in piano pedagogy.
Chanelle Arneson's bio
Chanelle Arneson is the sixth of seven children born to the Rev. and Mrs. Darrell and Sharon Arneson of Brooks, Ore. The Rev. Arneson is the senior pastor of Brooks Assembly of God.
The Arnesons are an extremely musical family. Mrs. Arneson and each of her children are pianists, and the Rev. Arneson is a violinist. Chanelle began playing the piano at age five and was practicing three hours per day by age eight. Her teacher was Elizabeth Stern.
In 2010, Arneson was selected to attend the prestigious Gijón International Piano Festival in Gijón, Spain. The festival consisted of 13 days of intensive instruction, master classes, recitals, concerts and private instruction from internationally known pianists. Faculty included instructors from the Julliard School of Music, New York University, Conservatoire de Géneve, Conservatoire Cantonal de Sion and the University of Montreal.
At Evangel, Arneson has studied piano with Dr. Greg Morris, professor of music. She has participated in several piano competitions in Missouri, and in November 2008 took first place in the Missouri Music Teachers Association State Competition, Collegiate Piano Lower Division.
Prior to her time at Evangel, Arneson participated in and won numerous piano competitions in the state of Oregon. She also competed in the Assemblies of God National Fine Arts Festival, placing in the Top Ten for six consecutive years (2001-2006). In 2007, she received the National Award of Merit for Keyboard Solo in this competition.
