While searching for abandoned GOLD MINES we came across beautiful Central City, Colorado. Once a thriving gold mining town, it is now a sleepy casino town resting in the Rocky Mountains.
Central City, is the Home Rule Municipality in Gilpin and Clear Creek counties. The city is a historic mining settlement founded in 1859 during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush and came to be known as the Richest Square Mile on Earth. Central City and the adjacent city of Black Hawk form the federally designated Central City/Black Hawk Historic District. -wikipedia
Argo Gold Mine
n 1893 construction of the Argo Tunnel Began. It would be 17 years before it would reach Central City, over 4.5 miles away. The tunnel would provide water drainage, ventilation and economical transportation of the gold bearing ore from the many mines it would intersect along the way.
The Argo Mill was constructed to process the gold bearing ore from these mines. When completed, the Argo would be the largest mill of its type in the world. The mill processed over 100 million dollars of gold ore at the old time prices of $18.00 to $35.00 per ounce and stands today as a memorial to the hard rock miners of the day when GOLD WAS KING!

Silver City Mine District - Part 1 Journeying On A Road Less Traveled
It truly is amazing how much history is found along this old wagon trail road that branches out to the many mines that were erected during Silver Cities heyday. Today these roads venture past many silver mines as nature seems to be consuming them. On occasion you may find remnants of an old automobile or a TNT box. We had set off on our journey one that would leave us with wanting to see more.

Flowery Mountains & Mine - Part 9 The Districts Most Prominent Mine
During our second expedition as promised I would take our viewers to a strip and open pit mine. The strip mining does for nearly a century has removed an entire hillside. Meanwhile the open pit mine is now a pond where the locals fish. I was disappointed that the district had many strip mines rather then tunnels to explore. We found an old bullet a few inches under ground here. This mine was the most prominent within the Flowery District.
