“Hie-jinja Shrine”: Power spot full of instagrammable highlights
Hie-jinja Shrine in Tokyo is a shrine of the traditional Japanese Shinto religion which is unique to Japan. This shrine has a lot of interesting features and there are many things to see. The “Treasure House” holding treasures of historical value, a row of bright red gates “Senbon Torii”, and “monkeys” are waiting for you!
Hie-jinja Shrine (“jinja” is “shrine” in English) has a history of about 800 years, and is located on a small mountain close to the Akasaka area. When you head towards the precincts you can use the shrine’s outdoor escalators. Well, what else to expect in a high-tech country like Japan!
The first thing you have to see is the colorful entrance gate. When you go through the gate and look closely around the precincts you will find some monkeys! OK, there are no real monkeys, but some really cute monkey statues. Especially the lovely statue of a mother monkey and her child on the left side of the main hall is said to bring blessings to pregnant women, or women who want to get pregnant. Therefore, a lot of people go up to the statue to gently pet the monkeys. Also, that’s why Hie-jinja Shrine is very popular among women and couples.
Since the monkey figures are very famous, the typical talisman amulets (omamori) and wooden wish plates (ema) – which you find at almost every shrine or temple in Japan – come in the shape of a monkey or have pictures of monkeys on them. These items are not only very cute but also make great souvenirs or gifts for your loved ones.
Hie-jinja Shrine is believed to be a so-called “power spot,” bringing luck to people who wish to find a partner, to those who are already or are going to be married, and to those raising children. It’s no wonder many Japanese people want to have their wedding ceremony at this shrine. When visiting Hie-jinja Shrine on the weekend, you may be able to see the beautiful kimono of the bride at her traditional wedding.
The “Treasure House” in the precincts displays the shrine’s treasures, which have historical value. The entry is free, so why don’t you stop by? The collection is recommended especially for those who are interested in the history of samurai. You can see real samurai swords! In addition, the exhibition includes dolls used at the famous Sanno Festival which takes place once every two years, national treasures, important Japanese cultural properties, handwritten letters (written 400 years ago) and much more.
Particularly popular among foreign tourists are the “Senbon Torii”. It’s a line of those red gates (tori), which you find at Japanese shrines. Speaking of “Senbon Torii”, Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto is famous for its beautiful torii. But if you can’t make it: Hie-jinja Shrine is the place to go!
There is so much to see at Hie-jinja Shrine that you should plan some time to visit all the famous spots…and don’t forget to pet the lovely monkey!

Nezu Jinja Shrine - Tokyo ᴴᴰ ● 根津神社 東京⎮Japan Travel Vlog
► Here's a look at the much overlooked Nezu Jinja - a Shinto buddhist Shrine in Eastern Tokyo. Often overshadowed by it's more famous cousins, Meiji Jingu and Senso-Ji, which is a shame, as Nezu Jinja is really beautiful in its own way, and somehow offers a more intimate atmosphere than most other temples and shrines around Tokyo.
If you're looking for a genuine classic Japan experience, at a place which isn't overcrowded with hordes of western tourists, then teh Nezu shrine is really the place to go. I spent 2 hours there, on a Satruday afternoon, and I didn't see any tourists apart from a couple of Chinese.
If you happen to be in Tokyo, I highly recommend a visit to this shrine. Easy access to Nezu Station by Chiyoda Line, Tokyo Metro. - Enjoy!

TOKYO: EXPLORING the controversial YASUKUNI SHRINE ???? (Japan)
SUBSCRIBE: - The Imperial Shrine of Yasukuni informally known as the Yasukuni Shrine (靖国神社 or 靖國神社) is a Shinto shrine located in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan. It was founded by Emperor Meiji and commemorates anyone who had died in service of the Empire of Japan, which existed from the Meiji Restoration of 1869 until the nation was renamed during the Allied occupation in 1947.
Japan is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean with dense cities, imperial palaces, mountainous national parks and thousands of shrines and temples. Shinkansen bullet trains connect the main islands of Kyushu (with Okinawa's subtropical beaches), Honshu (home to Tokyo and Hiroshima’s atomic-bomb memorial) and Hokkaido (famous for skiing). Tokyo, the capital, is known for skyscrapers, shopping and pop culture.

The date of establishment of the Hie Shrine is uncertain. According to one theory, Ōta Dōkan established it in 1478. Another theory identifies the Hie with the Sannō Shrine mentioned in a 1362 record of the Kumano Nachi Taisha. Tokugawa Ieyasu relocated it to the grounds of Edo Castle, and in 1604 his son Tokugawa Hidetada moved it out, so the people of Edo could worship there. The shaden was lost to the Great Fire of Meireki of 1657, and in 1659 Tokugawa Ietsuna rebuilt it at its present location. The shrine stands southwest of the castle, in the ura kimon direction according to onmyōdō. From 1871 through 1946, the Hie Shrine was officially designated one of the Kanpei-taisha, meaning that it stood in the first rank of government supported shrines. The shaden was lost again to the bombing of Tokyo during World War II. The present structure dates from 1958. The Hie Shrine possesses one National Treasure, a tachi (single-edged sword). It also holds 14 Important Cultural Assets, 13 swords and one naginata. The shrine is also one of the most popular for Japanese families to visit during the Shichi-Go-San coming-of-age festival. Tameike-Sannō Station on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line and Tokyo Metro Namboku Line, Kokkai-gijidō-mae Station on the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line and Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line, and Akasaka-mitsuke Station on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line and Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line are the closest stops to the shrine.
Hie Shrine was designated as a First Class Government Shrine before the Second World War, and was a highly respected place of worship for the people of Tokyo. The deity enshrined is Oyamakui-no-kami, the god of Mount Hie in Shiga prefecture. This deity is more commonly known as Hie-no-kami. Hie Shrine derives its name from this deity. Since the Heian Period, many branch shrines of the Hie Shrine in Shiga prefecture were built throughout Japan. The history of this Hie Shrine goes back to the beginning of the Kamakura Period when a man named Edo built a Hie Shrine for the guardian deity of his residence on grounds of the present Imperial Palace. In 1478, Ota Dokan constructed Edo Castle on the site of the present Imperial Palace. He also erected a Sanno-Hie Shrine in the compound for a guardian deity of the castle. The Shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa began ruling Japan from Edo Castle. He also became a patron of the Hie Shrine and worshipped the deity as the protector of Edo, the old name for Tokyo. The citizens of Edo also had the strongest faith in Hie Shrine, which enshrined the guardian deity of the Shogun. In 1607, the shrine was moved outside of Edo Castle to Hayabusa-cho, near the present Kokuritsu Gekijo National Theatre. This allowed the citizens of Edo to visit and worship at the shrine. In 1657, Hie Shrine and much of Edo was destroyed by fire. However, in 1659, Shogun Ietsuna Tokugawa rebuilt the shrine at its present location. The shrine buildings were constructed in the Gongen-Zukuri style with vermilion-lacquered finishings. The Gongen Zukuri style consists of a complex roof system in which the Haiden hall of worship and Honden inner sanctuary are connected. The Heiden offering hall, Haiden hall of worship, Honden inner sanctuary and Roumon gate were so magnificent that they were authorized as National Treasures. Regrettably, the shrine buildings were burnt down in the bombing of Tokyo during the Second World War, in 1945. The present shrine buildings were constructed in 1958 with contributions from numerous parishioners and worshippers.
