This drive begins in Colorado Springs, and ends in Victor. You could take the long way around on paved roads, but instead, this video follows Gold Camp Road: a well-maintained dirt road that cuts south of Pike's Peak, following an old railroad grade.

Saint Mary's Falls, Colorado Springs, Colorado
Video of Saint Mary's Falls in North Cheyenne Cañon Park in Colorado Springs, Colorado after a very wet spring.
I've never seen the water flow so strong.
The hike to this waterfall is about 5 miles round trip from the main parking area at the top of the canyon (at the split to High Drive and Gold Camp Road). I'd rate it moderate for difficulty - easy if you're relatively fit.
Colorado Springs CO City Video | Pink Realty
About Colorado Springs:
Colorado Springs is one of the greatest cities in America! It's size is small enough to maintain the feel of a connected community, but large enough to offer almost everything residents might need. There are so many things to do within the area that the family could go a whole year without visiting the same place twice. People are always out hiking, fishing, camping, and playing in the area. The endless recreation options ensure that there is always something to do that is fun.
Population:
The population density of Colorado Springs is lower than average, at 2325 people per sq mile. With plenty of room to grow, Colorado Springs is expected to continue it's growth trends for many years to come. Colorado Springs, CO is the second largest city in Colorado, with an estimated population of over 650,000 residents, including all the metro areas. The city offers more amenities than most of the surrounding areas, which is a contributing factor to its rapid growth. It's a fun place to live, work, and play!
National Pride:
Colorado Springs is the heart of the nation’s Olympic movement, where a timeless culture of achievement, national pride and dedication sits comfortably alongside awe-inspiring beauty and unparalleled natural training grounds. We are home to the United States Olympic Committee Headquarters, 21 National Olympic Governing Bodies, over 50 National Sport Organizations, the U.S. Olympic Training Center and the future U.S. Olympic Museum and Hall of Fame.
Diverse Community:
Our diverse community has always reached for the sky, while remaining firmly grounded in the tremendous opportunities that the Pike’s Peak Region affords us every day. Not limited to our manmade facilities, the region boasts incredible natural training ground, inspirational views and vistas, and a commitment to excellence that transcends sports and infuses itself in our educational, medical, technological and cultural assets.
Parks & Entertainment:
When Colorado Springs filed the original town plat in 1871, it included one city block as the first city-owned park. The park, known as North Park or Acacia Square is the site of the present-day Acacia Park. Colorado Springs' city founder General William Jackson Palmer generously donated 1,270 acres of parkland, bridle and foot paths, scenic drives and roadways planted with trees, to establish a significant foundation of the Colorado Springs park system. These gifts included Acacia (North) Park, Monument Valley Park, Antlers Park, Pioneer Square (South) Park, Palmer Park, North Cheyenne Cañon, Prospect Lake and Bear Creek Cañon. In 1909, the Perkins heirs gave Garden of the Gods Park to the City, adding to the beautiful parkland already established.
The wide range of exquisite restaurants in Colorado Springs range from high-end sophistication and superb elegance to rustic outdoor suppers, great wood-fired pizza and casual sidewalk cafes.
Colorado Springs restaurants also make outdoor patio dining a relaxing and inviting experience. During the warm months, you’ll be happy to see casual and family restaurants all over town opening their doors and setting out tables and chairs for al fresco diners. In the winter, cozy up near the fireplaces you’ll find in many international and special occasion restaurants around town.
True Community Involvement:
Unique partnerships between neighborhood associations, churches, schools, non-profit agencies, private businesses, and military installations allows the Colorado Springs Community Centers to create an unparalleled environment for learning, recreation, and personal growth. Additionally, the Community Centers provide comprehensive and integrated community-based services at a single site for youth, families, the elderly, and those with special needs.

Old Stage Road & Gold Camp Road In Colorado - September 16, 2018
Time lapse of twenty two mile drive from Colorado Springs to Victor, seven miles on Old Stage Road and the remainder on Gold Camp Road. This was a rail line (built in 1900 and known as the Short Line) for carrying ore down to the mills from the Cripple Creek Mining District. It became a toll road (known as the Corley Mountain Highway) in the 1920s, then was taken over by the US Forest Service in 1939 when they provided the current appellation. It is also known as Forest Service Road 368. Notice the narrow rock cuts and the tunnel made for the train. Aspen trees are showing their September color.

This trip also includes driving through the solar eclipse of August 21 in Nebraska (at about 3:30:00), as well as driving over the old Tappan Zee Bridge in upstate NY, which permanently closed a month later with the opening of the new Mario M Cuomo Bridge adjacent to it.

HD Drive up Pikes Peak Part 10 of 21 High Definition
Drive up Pikes Peak Part 10 High Definition - Pikes Peak is a 14115 foot mountain west of Colorado Springs, Colorado in El Paso County. It is named for Zebulon Pike, an explorer who led an expedition to the southern Colorado area in 1806. Drivers race up the mountain in a famous annual race called the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. The peak is also the site of the Pikes Peak Marathon and Ascent foot races on the Barr trail. The upper portion of Pikes Peak is a federally designated National Historic Landmark. The Pikes Peak highway is a 19 mile road which starts a few miles up Ute Pass at Cascade. A project to pave the road by 2012 is underway. Much of the fame of Pikes Peak is due to its location along the eastern edge of the Rockies. Pikes Peak is the easternmost fourteen thousand foot peak in the United States. It lies 37 miles west of Colorado Springs (traveling by road). Unlike most other similarly tall mountains in Colorado, it serves as a visible landmark for many miles to the east, far into the Great Plains of Colorado. As one drives south on Interstate 25 towards the city of Colorado Springs, it comes into view from a distance of more than 65 miles (105 km). On a clear day, the peak can be seen from Denver (more than 60 miles (97 km) north), points south of Pueblo (up to 76 miles) and from locations east from Limon (85 miles).
Pikes Peak is made of a characteristic pink granite, called Pikes Peak granite. The pink color is due to a large amount of potassium feldspar. The granite was formed by an igneous intrusion in the Pre-Cambrian, approximately 1.05 billion years ago, during the Grenville orogeny. During the period of exploration in Colorado, many would refer to the mountain as Pike's Peak, after Zebulon Pike, the man who first documented it and attempted to climb to its summit. The attempt failed to reach the summit, as it was made during the winter. The snow drifts were reported chest-high at the time of the climb.
Edwin James was the first to reach the summit, during a summer attempt. Later, some suggested calling it James' Peak, but in the same area there was another James' Peak, which made identification a confusing issue. The name went back and forth until it was settled with a uniquely identifiable name.
Originally the peak was called Pike's Peak, but in 1891, the newly formed US Board on Geographic Names recommended against the use of apostrophes in names, so officially the name of the peak does not include an apostrophe. In addition, in 1978 the Colorado state legislature passed a law mandating the use of Pikes Peak only. Even so, the old name is often seen.
The earliest record we could find that noted the altitude of Pikes Peak was an 1859 map that described the routes to Pikes Peak during the gold rush. Pikes Peak's altitude was listed at 14,500 feet. A stereograph of the Signal Station on the Summit by J. Thurlow (circa 1874-78) showed the elevation as 14,216 feet. In the same general timeframe was another stereograph by Eugene Brant that had the altitude marked at 14,336. Next was an 1891 William Hook photo with the altitude stated as 14,147. While a Heistand image (also from 1891) had the altitude stated as 14,336, most other souvenirs and images from that era repeated the 14,147 altitude. In 1907, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) set the official altitude at 14,107. Another USGS survey in 1909 reset the altitude at 14,109. We could not find the exact date, but the altitude was again reset to 14,110 on or before 1951. In 2002, yet another USGS measurement reset the altitude of Pikes Peak to 14,115. (Even though the official new altitude was declared seven years ago, most current tourism materials and signage still reflect the earlier altitude of 14,110.)
No visit to the Pikes Peak region is complete without experiencing Pikes Peak - America's Mountain! From the gateway at 7,400 feet to the 14,110-foot summit, a safe, scenic highway provides you the opportunity to enjoy Pikes peak at your leisure. You will encounter some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world as you wind your way through an alpine wonderland of mountain reservoirs, beyond timberline, overtaking the clouds...all part of the 19-mile journey to the top. Stop in and pick up souvenirs at one of the gift shops. In addition to gifts, the Crystal Reservoir Gift Shop, just six miles up the road, offers sluice mining and interpretive opportunities during the summer. The Glen Cove Inn, at 13 miles, offers snacks and a comfortable seat on a rock by the stream at the bottom of one of the cirques on Pikes Peak. The Summit offers a grilled food menu and world-famous donuts. From the Summit, you'll thrill at the 360-degree panorama that includes the city of Colorado Springs, the eastern plains towards Kansas, the Continental Divide, and range upon range of snow-capped Rocky Mountains. The entrance to Pikes Peak -- America's Mountain is conveniently located 15 minutes west of Colorado Springs on Highway 24.
