Best Rooftop Bar in Los Angeles - Hotel Erwin
Los Angeles may not have as many cool rooftop bars and lounges as New York, but the views here are second to none.
Situated a few steps away from Venice Beach, Hotel Erwin boasts some of the best views of the city at their High Rooftop Lounge.
The Hottest Rooftop Bars in Los Angeles for Tatler
Awards season is when the City of Angels sparkles brightest. When big stars, whopping statement jewellery and dubious halos shine for all to see. But recently, there’s been a shift in the social scene that comes hand in glove with the Oscars. Put simply – all of the cool kids are getting high.
A bunch of new luxury hotels and restaurants have cropped up in revamped Downtown LA (or DTLA in its T-shirt-friendly acronym) and neighbouring West Hollywood (WeHo to you), bringing with them a bevy of sumptuous rooftop bars. And La La Land’s A-List can’t get enough of them.
With afternoon cocktails amid the skyscrapers and sundowners on a perfect LA evening (about 320 nights a year here), and killer DJ sets on the pool deck ’til the early hours, these are the very best of the rooftop bars in Los Angeles. Just keep your eyes peeled when ordering that second bottle of champagne – all of the below are near certain to be graced with some major star presence…
Mama Shelter, Hollywood
MAMA LOVES YOU is the motto of this casual-chic boutique-hotel group. A big hit in Marseilles, Paris and Rio de Janeiro, it moved to LA recently (with London soon to follow). As far as Hollywood's cognoscenti are concerned, the feeling is mutual: the rooftop bar here is so popular that it’s often at full capacity by 2pm on Saturdays (that’s 10 hours before closing). If you make it in, you’ll be soaking up the sun – and panoramic views across Hollywood – with the likes of Thandie Newton, Evan Rachel Wood, Sylvester Stallone and Lili Reinhart.

The Standard, Downtown
Once a black hole surrounded by glamour, Downtown LA is now having its time in the sun – metaphorically as well as meteorologically. At the heart of its renaissance is André Balazs’ hip Standard hotel, with its fêted rooftop bar that includes waterbeds and a German-style biergarten. Just ask Charlize Theron, Owen Wilson, Mark Wahlberg, Sofia Coppola, Nicolas Cage or Leonardo DiCaprio – they’ve all been spotted partying here.

Spire 73, Financial District
The newest addition to LA’s rooftop-bar scene is also the tallest. Situated a head-spinning 73 stories above the city (atop the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown), Spire 73 has views that are predictably sensational. This is, in fact, the highest open-air bar in the western hemisphere, and you can see as far as Pasadena on a clear day, with heating lamps and fire pits to keep you cosy on (rare) chilly evenings. The bar is so new that even the A-list haven’t discovered it yet, but that’s just a matter of time.

Petit Ermitage, West Hollywood
A bohemian oasis amid the jangle of La La Land, Petit Ermitage has achieved hot-property status with well-heeled locals and visitors. Celebrities are a daily occurrence in the souk-luxe environment around the spectacular saltwater pool, with fans including Kaley Cuoco, Rosario Dawson, Emily Ratajkowski, Tom Cruise and Victoria Beckham.

The Highlight Room, Hollywood
Arriving on the scene in late 2017, the ultra-chic rooftop bar at the Dream Hotel Hollywood is already one of THE places to see and be seen in LA. A de-facto embassy for the beautiful (there’s even a modelling agency permanently based here), the Highlight Room is breezy, Mediterranean in style and effortlessly cool. It also has plenty of nooks, crannies and poolside cabanas for respite from the sunlight (or limelight), which is why it’s become a firm favourite with Pharrell Williams, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Katy Perry, Jamie Foxx, Calvin Harris, Jared Leto and Heidi Klum.

EP & LP, West Hollywood
Even the locals get confused when it comes to which is which, so let's be clear: LP is a buzzy West Hollywood bar, situated on top of EP - a popular Asian fusion restaurant. (A good way of remembering, as one local tells me, is that LPs play longer). Upstairs, a Centre Court-style retractable roof reveals a lively cocktail lounge: all neon lights, laughter and incredibly potent drinks ('Where Love Lives' is a particular treat). Margot Robbie and her husband Tom Ackerley recently watched the Super Bowl here, while Usher, Justin Bieber and Christina Milian are also known to have raised a glass or three on the roof.

Hotel Erwin, Venice Beach
If there was an Oscar for best rooftop establishment, High at Hotel Erwin would be one of the frontrunners. The only rooftop bar in hip Venice Beach is insanely popular, boasting sea views (it's a mere skip and a jump from the beach itself) - perfect for catching the extraordinary sunset over the Pacific, and best enjoyed with a martini glass in hand. Celebrities spotted staring at the view (and possibly drinking the signature My Little Pony cocktail) include Julia Roberts, James Franco, Tyra Banks and Drew Barrymore.

The Rooftop Lounge at Casa del Camino, Laguna Beach
Leave your worries at the door of La Casa del Camino hotel and head up to the roof! A local favorite and a must-see for visitors, The Rooftop Lounge offers a front row seat for a spectacular sunset. Indulge in one of the best happy hours in town, with signature fresh fruit Mojitos and one truly amazing panoramic ocean view while sampling small bites and California casual cuisine.
The Rooftop Lounge is the perfect venue for every occasion including weddings, private parties, meetings or corporate events with indoor/outdoor space, on-site catering and a staff dedicated to your every need.
The Rooftop at Hotel Erwin, Venice, CA
We visited the gorgeous rooftop bar at the lovely Hotel Erwin in Venice, California. They have a glorious lounge to gaze the incredible sunset views right off the Pacific Ocean. On a clear day you can see the infamous Capitol Records building all the way in Hollywood. It's certainly a favorite place of mine, I will be gladly returning.

71 Above Restaurant - Dinner in the Round, 950 feet up
U.S. Bank Tower, formerly Library Tower and First Interstate Bank World Center, is a 1,018-foot (310.3 m) skyscraper at 633 West Fifth Street in downtown Los Angeles, California, United States. It is the third-tallest building in California, the second-tallest building in Los Angeles, the fifteenth-tallest in the United States, the third-tallest west of the Mississippi River after the Salesforce Tower and the Wilshire Grand Center, and the 92nd-tallest building in the world, after being surpassed by the Wilshire Grand Center. Because local building codes required all high-rise buildings to have a helipad, it was known as the tallest building in the world with a roof-top heliport from its completion in 1989 to 2010 when the China World Trade Center Tower III opened.[8] It is also the third-tallest building in a major active seismic region; its structure was designed to resist an earthquake of 8.3 on the Richter scale. It consists of 73 stories above ground and two parking levels below ground. Construction began in 1987 with completion in 1989. The building was designed by Henry N. Cobb of the architectural firm Pei Cobb Freed & Partners and cost $350 million to build. It is one of the most recognizable buildings in Los Angeles, and often appears in establishing shots for the city in films and television programs.
In July 2014, Overseas Union Enterprise Ltd. (OUE), the new owners of the skyscraper, announced construction of an observation deck named OUE Skyspace on the 69th and 70th floors and a restaurant named 71Above on the 71st floor. The facilities opened on June 24, 2016, following remodeling and construction costing $31 million that included a makeover of the ground floor lobby as well as a separate second floor entrance for tourists, and a skylobby and exhibit hall on the 54th floor. Access to the observation deck costs $25 per person. For an additional $8 visitors can take a trip down a transparent glass slide affixed to the outside of the building between the 70th and 69th floors.
Towering above Downtown on the 71st floor of the U.S. Bank Tower building, this stunning venue offers sky-high dining, drinking and lounging amid geometric-chic design and panoramic city views (through the wraparound electronically tinted windows). With modern American tasting menus from chef Vartan Abgaryan and expertly crafted cocktails, it’s a tough ticket; a cool interactive reservation system adds style to the process. By THE ZAGAT REVIEW
When you decide what to eat at night, you consider the obvious: What kind of food do you want? That’s important. But what’s more important to your decision is the “why.” Are you on the way home and have no desire for detours? Are you already stoned on your couch watching The Voice and need something hand delivered to your lap? Probably. And that’s why decent restaurants with plenty of reasons to eat at them make it into our weekly rotation, and really good restaurants with fewer reasons to go often don’t. As for 71Above, it’s definitely the latter.
Perched on top of the US Bank Tower downtown, 71Above is as visually impressive a restaurant as you’ll find in LA. You don’t need to wait in line at Soarin’ Over California to know we don’t have many tall buildings in this town, let alone ones with 360-degree-view restaurants on top. And for that reason alone, 71Above is unlike anything else.
As for the food? Delicious. Yes, the $70 three-course choose-your-own-pre-fixe adventure at dinner is a little fussy, but the reality is the menu is solid as a rock. The agnolotti (with black truffle and ricotta) is outstanding and the scallop curry situation will stay in your mind for days. So what’s the holdup? 9.0 game-changing blockbuster, right? Well, it all goes back to the “why.”
Outside of the fancy corporate lunch/dinner, there are frankly just not many situations we could see ourselves at 71Above. The views are obviously great and the main dining hall looks like a mid-century art installation, but the vibe inside is not much of anything. There’ll be a few guys drinking quietly at the bar and some tables filled with uptight financial people talking about stock consultation, but that’s hardly the atmosphere we would want to have a big date night or show off the city to friends in.
So take 71Above for what it is: a good-looking, well-executed shrine to the corporate power stage and a great place to see what Century City looks like at 4pm. You’ll probably find a time and place for 71Above, it just won’t come around very often.
