Why Hampstead pond is so special - BBC London
It's a unique corner of London that hasn't changed for decades.
Now a new film has been made about what makes Hampstead pond so special.
Report by Thomas Magill.
Hampstead Heath Ponds
Hampstead Heath is home to two chains of reservoirs, the Hampstead Heath chain and the Highgate chain. These ponds were where the first water supply for London started. A scheme was recently developed to help protect local residents from flooding.

Where to swim in London: Hampstead Heath (Mixed Bathing Pond)
Hampstead Heath (locally known simply as the Heath) is a large, ancient London heath, covering 320 hectares (790 acres). This grassy public space sits astride a sandy ridge, one of the highest points in London, running from Hampstead to Highgate, which rests on a band of London Clay.
The heath is rambling and hilly, embracing ponds, recent and ancient woodlands, a lido, playgrounds, and a training track, and it adjoins the former stately home of Kenwood House and its estate. The south-east part of the heath is Parliament Hill, from which the view over London is protected by law.
Running along its eastern perimeter are a chain of ponds – including three open-air public swimming pools – which were originally reservoirs for drinking water from the River Fleet.
The heath is a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation, and part of Kenwood is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Lakeside concerts are held there in summer. The heath is managed by the City of London Corporation, and lies mostly within the London Borough of Camden with the adjoining Hampstead Heath Extension and Golders Hill Park in the London Borough of Barnet.
Just for a few ££ you can swim in the nice ponds in Hampstead Heath place (just above Camden town). There are three ponds Mens, Womens and Mixed on Parliament Hill, from which you can see a breathtaking view on London.

Hampstead, London - History & Walking Tour day trip
Curious about Hampstead NW3, the borough of North London near where I live, I researched a little about the history of Hampstead and filmed this short walking tour of the area.
In this video I cover:
- A brief history of Hampstead from around 1698 to the present day, including facts about:
- Hampstead Well, spring water, baths and spa (Well Walk, Well Road, & Flask Walk)
- Burgh House (Dr William Gibbons' former home and also once the home of Rudyard Kipling's daughter Elsie Bambridge. Today it's the Hampstead Museum.
- Whitestone Pond (aka White Stone Pond or Horse pond, near Whitestone Walk)
- The Admiral's House on Admiral's Walk (inspiration to PL Travers' Mary Poppins story featuring the eccentric Admiral Boom)
- Poet, John Keats' connection to Hampstead including his home on Well Walk and later in Wentworth Place on Keats Grove, which is today the Keats House Museum and Branch Library.
- Painter and Artist John Constable's connection to Hampstead and his home at number 40 on Wells Walk
- A few other famous people throughout history who have lived in Hampstead
- A few more recent celebrities who have been said to have connections with Hampstead
- My favourite places in Hampstead including the crepes from Hampstead Creperie (La Crêperie de Hampstead), the shops, Hampstead Heath, the swimming ponds in the Heat, Parliament Hill and the cute side streets that are often decorated with pretty bunting.

Transgender Men Given Full Access to Women-Only Swimming Pond
Transgender bathers have been given full access to use Hampstead Heath's iconic Ladies'-Only Pond following a controversial consultation.
The City of London Corporation has officially adopted a new gender identity policy which means anyone can access the female facilities if they identity as a woman.
But the plans for one of the country's most iconic outdoor ladies-only swimming ponds have been met with a backlash from some campaigners.
Others have questioned why the council gave the motion a green light despite disregarding nearly 19,000 of responses to its equality survey.
The policy - which has been welcomed by the Kenwood Ladies' Pond Association (KLPA) - comes after an online survey consultation on attitudes to gender identity received nearly 40,000 responses.
But 18,459 were disregarded as invalid, on the basis that those respondents did not answer any questions other than to identify themselves and declare the reason for their interest in the survey.
The survey, undertaken by the City Corporation, showed around 12,390 of the remaining 21,000 respondents agreed that trans people should be able to access services relating to their gender identity.
In total, around 18,459 votes were thrown out, 12,390 were in favour of transgender users, and 8,610 were against.

Dozens of swimmers braved a cold winter morning to take part in the annual Peter Pan Cup, organised by the Serpentine Swimming Club, in London's Hyde Park on Tuesday.
The 100-yard (91-metre) race has been held every Christmas Day since 1864. It got its name in 1903 when Scottish novelist J.M. Barrie, who created Peter Pan, was a member of the swimming club and participated in the competition.
The winner of this year's event was 36 year-old resident of London Sakura Adams who was cheered on by scores of spectators gathered on the lake's banks to watch the tradition.
