Walking through Inverness Museum & Art Gallery - Highlands - Scotland - Video 2/3
Explore the historic city of Inverness with a visit to Inverness Museum and Art Gallery. Situated right in the historic centre of the city at the foot of the Castle hill, the museum is a treasure trove of artifacts relating to the history of Highland Scotland.
Inverness' first museum was opened in 1826, since then the museum has undergone a number of transformations, most recently in 2007, when the building was extensively refurbished with a range of new displays and visitor facilities.
The exhibitions begin on the ground floor with geology and natural history as well as the rich archaeological heritage of the Highlands. Continue upstairs to discover the more recent history of the Highlands. Here you will find Jacobite memorabilia, Inverness silverware, authentic Highland weapons and bagpipes. The museum offers a great deal more than just exhibitions and displays, with a programme of lunchtime talks, workshops, recitals as well as activities for children and adults.
The Art Gallery hosts an exciting programme of local fine art and craft exhibitions, with a variety of changing featured artists.

Captain E E Fressons O B E Highlands Pioneer Aviator
We have just arrived at Inverness Airport in from Belfast ) and of course I immediately spot this statue tribute to pioneer Highlands aviator Captain E E Fressons O B E
Captain Ernest Edmund Ted Fresson, OBE, lived from 20 September 1891 to 25 September 1963. He was a pioneer aviator who is primarily remembered for establishing Highland Airways, which inaugurated a passenger service between Inverness, Wick and Kirkwall on 8 May 1933. The wider picture in Scotland at the time is set out in our Historical Timeline.
Ernest Edmund Fresson was born in Surrey and was the son of Mitchel Fresson, a stockbroker, and Marian Robins, an artist. He was the oldest of a family of four boys and two girls. Ted Fresson trained to be an engineer and in 1911 was sent by the company he worked for to China. During World War One Fresson volunteered for the Royal Flying Corps, and in 1918 trained in Canada to be a pilot. After the war he returned to China, where he started to build aircraft, initially from parts shipped out from Britain, but eventually to his own design.
Fresson returned to Britain in 1927 and began to make a living offering aeroplane joy rides to people from improvised airfields the length and breadth of the country. This gave him the idea of starting a scheduled airline service serving the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. He formed Highland Airways Limited in 1933, with considerable support from local businesses such as the Inverness motor engineers Macrae & Dick. On 8 May 1933 Highland Airways started its first scheduled service between Inverness, Wick and Kirkwall. In October 1933 he expanded into charter flights when he flew three businessmen from Aberdeen to Shetland. Scheduled services from Aberdeen began on 7 May 1934, and on 29 May 1934 he was awarded the Royal Mail's first domestic airmail contract. Services followed throughout the Highlands and Islands and Argyll with links to Aberdeen, Perth and Glasgow.
At the start of World War Two Fresson, who by now had landed in almost every likely field in Scotland, advised the Air Ministry on the establishment of the many military airfields which rapidly appeared around the country. Meanwhile, Highland Airways became part of Scottish Airways, which Fresson played a key role in running throughout the war. In 1947 all UK domestic air services were nationalised into British European Airways, and Fresson (and many other early pioneers of air transport) were evicted from their businesses without compensation. Ted Fresson moved abroad, but returned to Scotland in the 1950s, continuing to fly occasional charters using his own aircraft. He died in Inverness on 25 September 1963. He is remembered in a display at the Highland Aviation Museum near the modern Inverness Airport: and in the pattern of air services he established serving the Highlands and Islands, most of which continue to operate today. His name also lives on in the Fresson Business Park, being developed on the site of the original Inverness Aerodrome near the Kessock Bridge and used by Fresson in the 1930s. Meanwhile, the name of Highland Airways was reborn in 1991 in the form of an airline running a service linking Inverness Airport with a number of destinations in the Western Isles, though this ceased flying in March 2010.
Nimrod interior walkround at Inverness Aviation museum
Collecting my son from Inverness recently we had the chance to visit and look around Inverness aviation museum, a small but fascinating experience with a (truly enormous) ex RAF Nimrod (or half of), which you can wander round and play with, it's a true hands on experience and highly recommended.
There are three jet fighters which unfortunately on the day had their cockpits closed but being staffed with volunteers it's dependant on the day but you can sit in the cockpits when open. In addition there's a nice display inside the reception area with an ejector seat you can strap into and play with.
Disclaimer, some of my technical descriptions of the contents of the aircraft may not be correct. :)

Places to see in ( Inverness - UK )
Inverness is a city on Scotland’s northeast coast, where the River Ness meets the Moray Firth. It's the largest city and the cultural capital of the Scottish Highlands. Its Old Town features 19th-century Inverness Cathedral, the mostly 18th-century Old High Church and an indoor Victorian Market selling food, clothing and crafts. The contemporary Inverness Museum and Art Gallery traces local and Highland history.
Inverness meaning Mouth of the River Ness) is a city in the Scottish Highlands. Inverness is the administrative centre for the Highland council area, and is regarded as the capital of the Highlands. Inverness lies near two important battle sites: the 11th-century battle of Blàr nam Fèinne against Norway which took place on The Aird and the 18th-century Battle of Culloden which took place on Culloden Moor.
Inverness is the northernmost city in the United Kingdom and lies within the Great Glen (Gleann Mòr) at its north-eastern extremity where the River Ness enters the Moray Firth. At the latest, a settlement was established by the 6th century with the first royal charter being granted by Dabíd mac Maíl Choluim (King David I) in the 12th century. The Gaelic king Mac Bethad Mac Findláich (MacBeth) whose 11th-century murder of King Duncan was immortalised in Shakespeare's play Macbeth, held a castle within the city where he ruled as Mormaer of Moray and Ross.
Inverness College is the main campus for the University of the Highlands and Islands. With around 8,500 students, Inverness College hosts around a quarter of all the University of the Highlands and Islands' students, and 30% of those studying to degree level.
Inverness is linked to the Black Isle across the Moray Firth by the Kessock Bridge. It has a railway station with Abellio ScotRail services to Perth, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Thurso, Wick and Kyle of Lochlash. Inverness Airport is located 15 km east of the city and has scheduled flights to airports across the UK including London, Manchester, Belfast and the islands to the north and west of Scotland. Inverness is connected to London Euston by the Caledonian Sleeper, which departs six times a week and by the Virgin Trains East Coast operated Highland Chieftain to London King's Cross which runs daily.
