A Look Back at Summer 2018 Weather
*Please note that all data mentioned is collected from our automated observing stations from 10 different airports across eastern Utah and western Colorado. Some of our cooperative observers in more remote areas may have measured warmer or colder temperatures, or more or less precipitation than what was mentioned in this summary.*
September 1st marked the beginning of Meteorological Fall! The summer season, observed from June 1st to August 31st, was warm and dry across the region. June, which is our driest month climatologically, did not disappoint with all but the southern valleys ending the month well below normal. The northern valleys, including both the Craig-Moffat and Meeker-Coulter Field Airports ended June with over an inch below normal precipitation. As a result of dominant high pressure overhead, numerous sites hit the triple digits several times throughout the month. July was also drier than normal for most areas, though some heavy rain producing storms resulted in significant debris flows over the 416 fire burn scar in southwest Colorado. Better moisture finally moved into the region during the latter half of August when a good monsoonal push arrived. During the August 21st-23rd timeframe, several sites received between 0.50 and 1.00 inches of rain.
The Climate Prediction Center has issued its latest 3 month temperature and precipitation outlook (for the months of September, October and November). This outlook is showing a shift of odds towards warmer temperatures and above normal precipitation across western Colorado and eastern Utah for Meteorological Fall.
