Tampa is a city in and the county seat of Hillsborough County, Florida, United States.[11] It is located on the west coast of Florida on Tampa Bay, near the Gulf of Mexico, and is part of the Tampa Bay Metropolitan Area. The city had a population of 346,037 in 2011.[12][13]
The current location of Tampa was once inhabited by indigenous peoples of the Safety Harbor culture most notably the Tocobaga and the Pohoy, who lived along the shores of Tampa Bay. The area was explored by Spanish explorers in the 16th century, resulting in violent conflicts and the introduction of European diseases, which wiped out the original native cultures. Although Spain claimed Florida as part of New Spain, it did not found a colony in the Tampa area, and there were no permanent American or European settlements within today's city limits until after the United States acquired Florida from Spain in 1819.
In 1824, the United States Army established a frontier outpost called Fort Brooke at the mouth of the Hillsborough River, near the site of today's Tampa Convention Center. The first civilian residents were pioneers who settled near the fort for protection from the nearby Seminole population, and the small village was first incorporated as Tampa in 1849. The town grew slowly until the 1880s, when railroad links, the discovery of phosphate, and the arrival of the cigar industry jump-started its development, helping it to grow from a quiet village of less than 800 residents in 1880 to a bustling city of over 30,000 by the early 1900s.
Today, Tampa is part of the metropolitan area most commonly referred to as the Tampa Bay Area. For U.S. Census purposes, Tampa is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The four-county area is composed of roughly 2.9 million residents, making it the second largest metropolitan statistical area (MSA) in the state, and the fourth largest in the Southeastern United States, behind Miami, Washington, D.C. and Atlanta.[14] The Greater Tampa Bay area has over 4 million residents and generally includes the Tampa and Sarasota metro areas. The Tampa Bay Partnership and U.S. Census data showed an average annual growth of 2.47 percent, or a gain of approximately 97,000 residents per year. Between 2000 and 2006, the Greater Tampa Bay Market experienced a combined growth rate of 14.8 percent, growing from 3.4 million to 3.9 million and hitting the 4 million population mark on April 1, 2007.[15] A 2012 estimate shows the Tampa Bay area population to have 4,310,524 people and a 2017 projection of 4,536,854 people.[16]
Tampa was ranked as the 5th best outdoor city by Forbes in 2008.[17] Tampa also ranks as the fifth most popular American city, based on where people want to live, according to a 2009 Pew Research Center study.[18] A 2004 survey by the NYU newspaper Washington Square News ranked Tampa as a top city for twenty-somethings.[19] Tampa is ranked as a Gamma+ world city by Loughborough University, ranked alongside other world cities such as Phoenix, Charlotte, Rotterdam, and Santo Domingo.[20]

Tampa, Florida - Traveling Robert
In this final installment of the Tampa Bay travel vlog we are going to visit Tampa proper over the course of three afternoons. We are attending the Florida Rv Supershow in the morning.
On the first day we stay in the car most of the time, just getting a little bit of the lay of the land. We drive on the street that claims to have the longest sidewalk in the world, Bayshore Boulevard. We also drive through Hyde Park, a historic district, home to the famous Bern’s Steakhouse. The southernmost point of our exploratory trip is Ballast Point Park, from where we get extraordinary views of downtown across the bay.
On our second day we have lunch at the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Florida. Also the oldest Spanish restaurant in the United States, and one of the largest in the wold. Its name is The Columbia. While we are in Ybor City we explore some of the historic sites and take a round trip on the TECO line street car to downtown.
On our third day, we eat at a trendy restaurant called Ulele, on the riverfront. We also explore downtown a little bit and the University of Tampa on the other side of the Hillsborough River. The Henry B. Plant Hall, is a historic building, formerly the legendary Tampa Bay Hotel. Nowadays it hosts the Henry B. Plant Museum as well as some of the University services.
Overall it was a great time. On our way out we bid farewell to one of Americas iconic roadside attractions, the Airstream ranch, which was demolished just a few days after our visit.

HILLSBOROUGH RIVER TURNS GREEN FOR ST. PATRICK'S DAY
TAMPA, FL - St. Patrick’s day is widely celebrated around the United States. Millions gather in their cities to celebrate the thousand-year-old holiday. The Tampa Bay area is no different.
The City of Tampa hosted its seventh annual ‘Mayor’s River O’Green’ fest in Downtown Tampa, which has been held since 2012. The Irish-themed party has as its main attraction the Hillsborough River, taking inspiration from the Chicago River.
Two small boats distributed non-toxic fluorescein over the river, coloring the waters a rich green hue.
Even though the event has been held for seven years, it continues to attract guests from all over the nation. Judy Copeland, a Tampa native, attended the fest for the first time this year. “First time to actually see the river, yes. I didn’t go on it, but I enjoyed watching the boats and the paddlers,” Copeland says.
The river provides a perfect backdrop to the celebration. Live music graced the guests with current and Irish-inspired tunes, making even those with two left feet get down with the beats. Kids’ activities and games, like bean bag toss and dice rolling, entertained the crowd for hours. Food trucks from local businesses filled the bellies of many.
Possibly one of the biggest Irish customs, beer, was served for the six hours that the event was held for. The ‘Beer Garden’ offered a wide array of beers, including the classic Irish beer, Guinness.
The high spirits of St. Patrick’s Day infected every person that attended. Local Tampa citizen Isabel Negron enjoyed more than all the attractions offered.
“My favorite part of today was watching all the kids play and hanging out with my friends,” Negron says.
If you missed the ‘River O’Green’ fest this year come out next year with your best green gear. Bring your family and don’t forget your furry friend at home.

Tampa / FL in Downtown on the Riverwalk HD
A trip to Tampa led us directly to Downtown, the central business district. Here we walked along a part at water directly on the Riverwalk. We started at the Convention Center, there you have a fantastic view to the Marriott Waterside Hotel, Harbour Island, The Westin Harbour Island Hotel, Sail Pavilion and Jose Gaspars Ship (Pirate Ship). The watertaxis drove slow on the Hillsborough River in the Manatee Areas. We walked until the Shareton Riverwalk Hotel. There you have a good overview to the Henry B. Plant Museum and Park. In MacDill Park on the riverwalk we had a relaxed breake. Tampa has a modern business district with a mix of banks, Hotels, Real Estate Companies and in the center in contrast the old city hall, very nice !

Tampa-Hillsborough Expressway Authority - Connected Vehicle Pilot Program
The United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) awarded a $2.4 million contract to the Tampa-Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA). This award will be used, in a THEA partnership with other local agencies and private sector stakeholders, to conduct an innovative Connected Vehicle (CV) pilot program designed to make transportation safer, smarter and greener. The THEA CV pilot program would outfit cars, buses and roadside equipment with technology so that they can communicate with each other about various traffic conditions. The proposal's main goals would be improved safety for vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists; improved traffic flow and transit trip times; and reduction of Tampa Bay's carbon footprint.

Tampa Bay is a large natural harbor and shallow estuary connected to the Gulf of Mexico on the west central coast of Florida, comprising Hillsborough Bay, McKay Bay, Old Tampa Bay, Middle Tampa Bay, and Lower Tampa Bay. The largest freshwater inflow into the bay is the Hillsborough River, which flows into Hillsborough Bay in downtown Tampa. Many other smaller rivers and streams also flow into Tampa Bay, resulting in a large watershed area.
The shores of Tampa Bay was home to the Weedon Island Culture and then the Safety Harbor Culture for thousands of years. These cultures relied heavily on Tampa Bay for food, and the waters were rich enough that they were one of the few Native American cultures that did not have to farm. When the first European explorers arrived in the early 1500s, the Tocobaga was likely the dominate chiefdom in the area. The indigenous population had been decimated by disease and warfare by the late 1600s, and there were no permanent human settlements in the area for over a century. The United States took possession of Florida in 1821 and established Fort Brooke at the mouth of the Hillsborough River in 1824.
The communities surrounding Tampa Bay grew tremendously during the 20th century. Today, the area is home to about 4 million residents, making Tampa Bay a heavily used commercial and recreational waterway and putting much stress on the bay's ecosystem, which had once teemed with wildlife. The bay was seriously polluted by the early 1980s, resulting in a sharp decline in sea life and decreased recreational use. Much greater care has been taken in recent decades to mitigate the effects of human habitation on Tampa Bay, most notably upgraded sewage treatment facilities and sea grass restoration projects, which has resulted in improved water quality over time.
The term Tampa Bay is sometimes used as shorthand to refer to all or parts of the Tampa Bay area, which comprises many towns and cities in several counties surrounding the large body of water. Local marketing and branding efforts (including several professional sports teams, tourist boards, and chambers of commerce) commonly use the moniker Tampa Bay, furthering the misconception that it is the name of a particular municipality when this is not the case.

Tampa is a city on Tampa Bay, along Florida’s Gulf Coast. A major business center, it’s also known for its museums and other cultural offerings. Busch Gardens is an African-themed amusement park with thrill rides and animal-viewing areas. The historic Ybor City neighborhood, developed by Cuban and Spanish cigar-factory workers at the turn of the 20th century, is a dining and nightlife destination.
Tampa is divided into five main districts fanning out from Downtown in the south-center between the Hillsborough River and Ybor Channel. West Tampa, once a separate city, lies across the Hillsborough River to the west of Downtown. South Tampa, a large residential area, extends south along the Interbay Peninsula. Historic Ybor City (sometimes considered a part of downtown) lies on the northeast side of downtown. East Tampa, the historically African-American side of the city, lies north of Ybor City. North Tampa forms the urban/suburban sprawl north of Busch Boulevard. A significant suburban area, often considered a part of Tampa, extends many miles to the northwest, north, and east of the city.
On first glance it may seem sprawling and businesslike, but Tampa is also home to a bunch of museums, parks and ambitious restaurants, many of which have popped up recently and brought the city dangerously close to becoming stylish. In the heart of downtown, the revitalized Riverwalk along the Hillsborough River glitters with contemporary architecture and scenic green spaces. Plus, between the zoo, the aquarium, the children's museums and the theme parks, families have enough top-shelf entertainment to last a week. By evening Ybor City's streets transform into southwest Florida's hottest bar and nightclub scene.
The Tampa Bay area was visited by many Spanish explorers, beginning with Panfilo de Narvaez in 1528. However, no long term permanent settlements were created until 1824 when the US federal government created a reservation for north Florida Seminole Indians. At the same time, the US created Fort Brooke to oversee the reservation as well as protect the strategic harbor.
