Himalaya Two Passes Trek - Episode 1: Flight Kathmandu to Lukla
Day 1 of our Himalaya Two Passes Trek: Helicopter Flight from Kathmandu to Lukla
Lukla is the tiny little airport from where all the treks in the Everest region start from (even Everest-climbers arrive there). Because of traffic jams and unstable weather we were upgraded to a helicopter flight, which was really cool. Helicopters can still start/land in Lukla when planes already give up. All starts/landings in Lukla are done by vision, it means the pilots need good weather and visibility. But clouds are very very common there, so that's when those traffic jams start to happen. Many flights get delayed to the next day. Chaos is very normal there... (which we found out on our way back, but that is a later video ;-) )
Helicopter flights to/from Lukla are much more expensive than planes (approx 500 USD per person), so that's why it was a real luxury to get an upgrade for just 100 USD...
My favourite part during the flight was, when the pilot decided to change course and fly around some big clouds, you can see that at around 1:55 in the video. I felt like I could touch those clouds.

Nepal Travels - A Trip Through Kathmandu - The Gateway To The Himalayas
- The gateway to the Himalayas has been a backpackers’ haven since the 1950s. Now recovering from the 2015 earthquake, it offers a magical mix of chaos and beauty.
There really isn’t an adequate way to describe Kathmandu. We lived in Kathmandu for over 2 months during our stay in Nepal.
In Kathmandu, almost everything revolves around the thriving backpacker district of Thamel. Here, winding alleyways lead to Unesco-listed sites, thriving markets, bustling bazaars, and restaurants with just about every cuisine imaginable. We found it incredible, intoxicating and just a little exhausting.
To see the 'real' Kathmandu, we recommend stepping outside of Thamel. The rest of the city is jam-packed with cultural and artistic history to rival any European city, endless streets worth exploring, and you'll find some of the friendliest locals all around. It's also a little slower paced than Thamel, which you'll appreciate after a while. Check out our guide to the best things to do in Kathmandu if you need some inspiration.
Originally known as Kantipur, it was once the main trading route between Tibet and India and gradually grew into the metropolis known today. With a population of around 1.7million, the city will, at times, frustrate you; the constant nagging of street vendors, the beeps of passing cars, exhaust fumes, rubbish and the ever present crush of humans can be hard to manage. Yet push through these and you’ll soon realise that this city is actually a welcoming, achingly beautiful melting pot of Buddhist and Hindu religion, ethnicity and history.
Crazy, chaotic, historic, spiritual, haphazard, enticing and vibrant come to mind yet they don’t do this city justice; Kathmandu is just Kathmandu. Totally unique and different to anywhere you’ll visit anywhere in the world.

SHOYAMBHUNATH | MONKEY TEMPLE | KATHMANDU | NEPAL
Swayambhu is one of the holiest Buddhist stupas in Nepal. It is said to have evolved spontaneously when the valley was created out of a primordial lake more than 2,000 years ago. This stupa is the oldest of its kind in Nepal and has numerous shrines and monasteries on its premises.
Swayambhu literally means self-existent one. Believed to date back to 460 A.D., it was built by King Manadeva and by the 13th century, it had become an important center of Buddhism. Legend has it that Swayambhu was born out of a lotus flower that bloomed in the middle of a lake that once spread across the Kathmandu Valley once was. The largest image of the Sakyamuni Buddha in Nepal sits on a high pedestal on the western boundary of Swayambhu beside the Ring Road. Behind the hilltop is a temple dedicated to Manjusri or Saraswati - the Goddess of learning. Chaityas, statues and shrines of Buddhist and Hindu deities fill the stupa complex. The base of the hill is almost entirely surrounded by prayer wheels and deities. Devotees can be seen circumambulating the stupa at all times.

Nepal Trip Episode One. Kathmandu to Namche Bazaar - Will we need a guide or porter?
Travelling on our own gave us much more flexibility and a greater sense of adventure plus it's way cheaper than being with a tour company. I was the porter and Alison was our guide. What could possibly go wrong?
NEPAL (KATHMANDU & BARDIA NATIONAL PARK) - The Way Overland - Episode 45
After a huge month completing the 3 Passes Trek in the Himalayas we made our way back to Kathmandu to meet back up with Mitch, and spend a few days there catching up on video editing and some trip planning for the coming months.
We ended up staying at a guesthouse run by a famous Nepali climber, Temba Sherpa. On May 23, 2001, at the age of 16, Temba was the youngest person to ever summit Mt Everest! You can read more about him here: hellotemba.com
Temba and his girlfriend Annie took us to a local restaurant with traditional food from Kathmandu. Keen to try anything we let Temba put the order in and surprise us with whatever he thought we should try, which included chhaang; a relative of beer made with fermented barley, millet or rice grains served in a karuwa.
If you’re planning a trip to Kathmandu and want to stay somewhere outside the hustle and bustle of Thamel, I’d highly recommend staying at Temba’s place! He has some rooms on Airbnb which you can book through this link: .
After a week in Kathmandu catching up on the videos, we were feeling ready to hit the road again. Our first stop was Pokhara, a city on Phewa Lake (second largest lake in Nepal) in central Nepal. It’s known as a gateway to the Annapurna Circuit, another popular trail in the Himalayas. As we’d already just completed a month of trekking we didn’t feel the need to hang around in Pokhara for longer than a night and kept moving to Bardia National Park. If you’re thinking of doing the Annapurna Circuit or doing a yoga course, Pokhara is really chilled out, has some great places to eat, and is a great place to spend a few days before embarking on your trek.
When researching which national park to visit, the most popular search result for Nepal is Chitwan National Park. We’d also asked Temba about what he thought we should do and he recommended that we visit Bardia National Park instead as he thought we’d have a better experience because it’s less touristy than the popular Chitwan National Park.
Arriving in Bardia we were greeted by one of the lodge owners (Nepal Wildlife Resort) on the street; to our surprise he was aware of our style of travel and offered for us to come and camp on his property. After 3 long days of driving and with the day going on dark we were happy to take him up on his offer! Through NWR we organised to do a full day hike in the national park with one of their guides for the following day.
Setting off early in the morning we entered the park and began our search for some wild elephants, one-horned rhino, and the elusive Bengal Tiger! We’d walked a total of 18km through the varying terrains of the park, following fresh paw and foot prints, and listening to any sounds that would help us get a glimpse at these beautiful animals. As the day was closing out we felt fresh out of luck and were ready to give up; when on our way back to the entrance our guide had a phone call informing him where a herd of wild elephants were just spotted! He asked if we were up for a run through the long grass to catch them in the riverbed before they crossed to the other side; which of course we said we were up for!
I was skeptical that we’d catch them, though to my surprise we got to witness a huge wild herd just a minute or two before they scrambled up the other side. We’d never seen an elephant in the wild before and WOW!, what a sight! There’s something pretty special seeing these animals just doing their own thing! A seriously amazing way to wrap up our time in Nepal!
The next day we left Bardia and made our way back into India via the border town of Nepalgunj, only a short 80km away back to the east. The Nepal checkout was quick and easy, though the Indian side was a little more time consuming and thorough (a sniffer dog inspected the Troopy!). Thankfully the customs officers were really friendly whilst they filled out our Carnet de Passage and served up some delicious Chai!
That's a wrap for this episode! Thanks for watching! In the next episode we’ll be exploring Varanasi, the spiritual capital of India and say goodbye to Mitch!

EBC Part 1 Everest Base Camp Trek Kathmandu to Namche Bazaar Nepal
Part 1 on the EBC Trek video - Day 1 - Day 3 - April 2019
Day 1| Everest Base Camp Trek | Kathmandu-Lukla-Phakding | English Subtitled മലയാളം വ്ളോഗ്
This is my Trek experience to the base of Everest, On Easter day we started from Kathmandu to Ramechap Airport to catch our flights to Lukla. The ride from Kathmandu took 4 hours to Reach Manthali Ramechap Airport. Flights were delayed due to bad weather at Lukla Airport and by 9 Am it got cleared off, by the time the Airport has crowded, we did not have our guide with us so we had to struggle a bit to get the flights. But our turns came and we boarded the Flights at 11 30 AM and we started our flight to the Worlds most Dangerous Airport -Lukla Tenzing Hillary Airport at 2845m . Landing was an spectacular experience. Lukla was very cold and it was drizzling when we arrived. We saw few takeoffs and Landing at the Airport and then headed towards the restaurant for Lunch. Post Lunch we packed our backpacks and started Trek to Phakding. It was scenic everywhere, clouds and breezy weather never made me sweat while walking. Then along the way, I met the Heros of the valley the 'Sherpas' hard working people . Learned a lot about the Tibetian culture and beliefs, The 'Om Padme Mani Hum' Mantras were always chanted at the trail while we reach restaurants and villages. The Mani stones and Prayer wheel became part of the Trek as we also started to follow the beliefs of people over there. Then came the biggest challenge to cross the Hanging bridges, the first one was a new experience later on the beauty of the surrounding just took the fear out of us. Some times we got traffic blocks due to animals carrying weight were coming down to Lukla.
People are all lovable and they always had happy faces. The Sherpas play loud music to motivate themselves while climbing with huge weights. One fact is that Nepalese hold the largest Lung capacity of all the entire world due to there trekking activities. After 4 hours of trek, we reached Dawa- our trek leads Tea house at Phakding, yes it was tiresome but taking this as a warm-up. Not we are getting acclimatized t the high altitude and weather and then food here is awesome, although I did not come for food here my Friends Ajay and Ananya had a lot of joy having yummy recipe s from the valley. We had a self introduction that day wit all th etrek members adn then we had a good sleep.Se you guys on my next video as we trelk from Phakding to Namche Bazaar.
