The Annual Himeji Castle Matsuri in Japan (2017).
Saturday May 13 the annual “Himeji Oshiro Matsuri (姫路お城)” was held. There was a festive mood around the famous “White Heron Castle” The castle was founded in 1333 when a fort was constructed on Himeyama hill by Akamatsu Norimura (赤松 則村 1277 - February 18 1350) the ruler of the ancient Harima Province.
Different groups from Himeji City and all across Japan took part. Highlight is of course Senhime or Lady Sen (千姫) who was the eldest daughter of the shogun Tokugawa Hidetada and his wife Oeyo. She was born during the Warring-States period of Japanese history. Her paternal grandfather was the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Senhime is a beloved figure in Himeji. Shortly after her marriage to Honda Tadatoki they moved to Himeji Castle whose west wing was mostly constructed at that time. Most of the west wing is lost now but a tower called keshō yagura (Dressing Tower) remains where it is believed that she actually groomed herself.
From Castle to Palace: Samurai Architecture
Japan's warlords built fortresses during the constant civil warfare from 1300 to 1600. These castles housed the local government, had many defensive devices, and impressed rivals with their scale and their lord's ability to have them built and maintained.
Japan - Diverse delights of a Japanese jewel
T/I: 10:53:39
DIVERSE DELIGHTS OF A JAPANESE JEWEL
Kurashiki, Japan Natural Sound Duration 2.30
It's a Japanese jewel hidden away behind a cluster of around 600 islands in the Seto Island Sea. Facing the sea, 750 kilometres west of Tokyo, the town of Kurashiki has been a major centre for Japan's textile industry since the late 19th century. The buildings in Ivy Square were once a cotton mill and the folkcraft museum occupies a former rice storehouse. Each year, around four and a half million tourists flock to the town to enjoy its scenic beauty. The Ohara
Museum of Art houses work by several masters from all over the world. The skill of glass-blowing is alive and well in the town and the making of papier mache toys continues in the traditional way. Kurashiki is linked to a chain of islands by the Seto Ohashi bridge. It also leads to Shikoku, one of Japan's four main islands. Completed in 1988, the bridge spans a distance of 12.3 kilometres. In the shadow of the Seto Ohashi bridge, the traditional fishing boats of Kurashiki still ply their age-old trade. The sight is a symbol of Japan - old traditions lying side by side with modern technology.

Sennyuji Temple From Thatched Hermitage to Mitera!
Sennyu-ji (temple of flowing fountain) is located at the foot of Mt. Tsukinowa in the Higashiyama area in Kyoto. It is the main temple of the Sennyu-ji School, Shingon sect.
Sennyuji temple is located at the foot of Mt. Tsukinowa in the Higashiyama area in Kyoto. The origin of this temple, which is familiar to citizens by the name Mitera, can be traced back to the Tencho era (824-834) when Priest Kobo founded a small temple in the place. That small temple, which was first called by the name, Horinji, and later, Sen' yu-ji, was remarkably enlarged by Priest Tsukinowa Shunjo in 1218. Large temple buildings were built in the contemporary Chinese style of the Song dynasty, and the temple was renamed after the clear water which began to flow from its precinct-Sennyuji (temple of flowing fountain).
Priest Shunjo entered the priesthood as a young man. He went to China during the Song dynasty to study Buddhist thoughts. After returning to Japan, he turned Sennyuji into a prosperous temple, by covering four schools of Buddhism in the temple: Shingon esoteric Buddhism. The temple was supported by the Imperial family, who were pious Buddhists. Since the burial of the Emperor Shijo in this temple in 1242, the mausoleum of several succeeding emperors were built in this area, with this temple playing the role of a mourning temple of the Imperial family. The scenic temple precinct includes the Butsu-den (Buddha's hall), the Shari-den (relic's hall), the Reimei-den for the repose of the late emperors, and other building.
Reimei-den: Today's building of the Reimei-den was reconstructed by the order of the Emperor Meiji in 1884. Roofs are covered with cypress-barks and structured in the Irimoya-zukuri (hipped and gabled) style. The building is designed in the Shinden palace style. The building consists of the Naijin, Chujin, and Gejin sections: the naijin section was made as a palace with five rooms. This Reimei-den has a close relationship to the Imperial family, and several succeeding emperors, starting from the Emperor Tenji, are enshrined in it. The interior decorations have been donated by the Imperial family since the Meiji period.

Empress Yang-Avalokitesvara: Empress Yang is known as a wife of the Emperor Xuan Zong of the Tang dynasty and also as a exquisite beauty of the history. When she died, the Emperor missed her very much and had her sculpture made in an image of Avalokitesvara, which was brought to this temple by Priest Tankai in 1255. The beauty and holiness of the statue has been attracting worshippers.
Gozasho: The building of today's Gozasho was originally one of the building of the Imperial Palace, which was moved into the temple precinct by the order of the Emperor Meiji when the Reimei-den of the temple was reconstructed. Six rooms are in the western section of this building by the porch. The room in the south-east was an Emperor's room, and the one in the north-east was used for empress's childbirth. The floor of the emperor's room is higher than those of other rooms, and a characteristic shelf is equipped. The Emperor Kokaku's mulberry-wood desk is placed in the center of the room.
Kaie-do: The building of the Kaie-do was also moved from the Imperial Place. Personal tutelary icons of several emperors and other imperial family members are enshrined here. AS those images were made by skillful sculptors, they are all excellent art objects.

Setouchi Art Festival - Ogijima - Light/Trinkets/Jars
Japan's Setouchi International Art Festival 2013 brings art installations across many islands and ports in the eastern half of the Seto Inland Sea (the Sea between Shikoku island and Japan's main island of Honshu). The Festival has three seasons and features many events and installations to help support the local economies of these places as well as artists.
Ogijima is a great little island just north of Megijima Island and Takamatsu City. The island itself is only 1.37 square kilometers and has about 200 people but is both interesting and relaxing. Narrow stone stairs and pathways round through the hillside as there is almost no flat land on the island.
This art house installation consisted of a single darkened room with a few small hanging clusters and one giant tree-like tall cluster in the centre of the room. There were possibly around 1000 hanging jars each with a small flickering light inside as well as a small trinket or momento from the local island.
This clip was shot originally intended to be b-roll for a montage of some recent travel.

For us, a couple of days was more than enough to sample lots of Japanese dishes and for a wander about. If we hadn’t been so hungover the first day, we probably would have done the castle on the first day, food in the afternoon and evening, and then hopped on a train the following day for a trip elsewhere - perhaps Hiroshima!
