In this third part to Kos {Greece} you will be seeing all about the centre of Kos Town and some of the old Town.

Area: 67.2 km²

Kos or Cos Greek: Κως [kos]) is a Greek island, part of the Dodecanese island chain in the southeastern Aegean Sea, off the Anatolian coast of Turkey. Kos is the third largest island of the Dodecanese by area, after Rhodes and Karpathos; it has a population of 33,388 (2011 census), making it the second most populous of the Dodecanese, after Rhodes. The island measures 40 by 8 kilometres (25 by 5 miles), and is 4 km (2 miles) from the coast of the ancient region of Caria in Turkey.
Earthquake in Kos:
On Kos, around 115 people were injured, including tourists - 12 of them seriously. Some buildings were damaged.
The earthquake struck at 01:31 on Friday (22:31 GMT Thursday).

Hippocrates 2500 year old original tree Hippocrates used to sit under Kos Greece

Tree of Hippocrates Planting
A cutting from the 500-year-old Tree of Hippocrates, which stands in the center of Kos Island in Greece, will now grow in the center of the Texas Medical Center at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School.
On Thursday, April 23, during a ceremony at the UTHealth Medical School, officials planted a piece of the ancient tree and unveiled a bronze bust of Hippocrates crafted from the original cast preserved at and licensed by the Archaeological Receipt Fund of Greece. The bust sits atop a modern-styled marble pillar next to the tree in a beautifully landscaped area overlooking Webber Plaza.

NIH Dedicates Tree of Hippocrates
The National Library of Medicine's National Center for Biotechnology Information unveiled the first genetic sequence barcode of the Tree of Hippocrates clone, Planatus orientalis. The clone was planted on the campus of the National Institutes of Health on April 25, 2014 and was sequenced by the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History's Laboratory of Analytical Biology as part of its Barcode of Life project.

Kos or Cos (Greek: Κως; Turkish: İstanköy; Italian: Coo; formerly Stanchio in English) is a Greek island in the south Sporades group of the Dodecanese, next to the Gulf of Gökova/Cos. It measures 40 km by 8 km, and is only 4 km from the coast of Bodrum, Turkey and the ancient region of Caria. The island has both fertile plains and infertile highlands with a population of 30,947. It is comprised of three municipalities: Kos, the administrative center and largest town pop. 17,890), Dikaio, and Irakleides.
The main port and population centre on the island, also called Kos, is also the tourist and cultural centre, with whitewashed buildings including many
hotels, restaurants and a small number of nightclubs forming the famous Kos town barstreet. The town has a 14th century fortress at the entrance to its harbour, erected in 1315 by The Knights of Saint John of Rhodes.
Greek orthodox church in Pyli on Kos island.The ancient physician Hippocrates is thought to have been born on Kos, and in the center of the town is the Plane Tree of Hippocrates, a dream temple where the physician is traditionally supposed to have taught. The limbs of the now elderly tree are supported by
scaffolding. The small city is also home to the International Hippocratic Institute and the Hippocratic Museum dedicated to him. Near the Institute are the ruins of Asklepieion, where Herodicus taught Hippocrates medicine. Kardamena is a popular resort for young British holidaymakers and has a large number of bars and nightclubs.
