Bridgeport Covered Bridge - The Longest Covered Bridge in the World - Road Trip Day 10 Vlog 27
Historic Bridgeport Covered Bridge in California - The Longest Covered Bridge in the World . See it at:
We continued our journey along Highway 49, but decided to take a slight detour. After taking a right on to Pleasant Valley Road and driving several miles, Neek, Sar and I arrived at the South Yuba River where South Yuba River State Park is located. Nearby, we found the object of our search: Bridgeport Covered Bridge.
This 19th century bridge attracted our curiosity because it is reported to be the longest single span wooden covered bridge in the world! The Bridgeport Covered Bridge was built in 1862 by David John Wood and was a vital link to the silver mines in Nevada at the time, with up to 100 wagons a day coming through the area. It was closed to vehicular traffic in 1972 and pedestrian traffic in 2011. But we still wanted to get as close as we could to check it out for ourselves!
Driving into the parking lot near the bridge, I saw there was a big adjacent building that looked like an ancient barn. I got out of the car and walked closer to see that it was the visitor center. Unfortunately for us, it was closed. Neek and I walked back on to Pleasant Valley Road to get a perspective of the old bridge from the (relatively) new bridge crossing over South Yuba River. The water was rushing through below us and creating a refreshing mist that felt good on that warm sunny day. We got some great views showing the full span of the historic covered bridge.

The South Fork of the Yuba River has beautiful pools of clear water pouring over huge granite boulders. This part of the river can be found at an area just below Lake Spaulding. This is a popular hiking area with numerous swimming holes. This is a popular destination during the warmer months when the water flow is slow and warm. All of this area is very rugged, requiring caution and good foot wear. There is private land in the area so watch for signs.
I had to get up early and get there before all of the hikers and swimmers. Unfortunately, the lighting was not perfect, but I had to do with what I was given. It is much better to not have a bunch of people in the shot.

Rolling Through History
Rolling Through History -- Grand opening of the historic barn at California's South Yuba River State Park. This event took place on September 16, 2007 but it is important again in 2012 because of the Parks Department threat to close the park because of California's budget crisis. This background is part of the successful effort of Nevada County citizens to keep the park open.
The event: After three years of work by park docents, volunteers and California State Park employees, the Historic Barn is opened as an interpretive exhibit of transportation through Bridgeport, and the public display of historic wagons, a hay press and hay fork. The interpretive center theme is: Bridgeport, a vital transportation link on the shortest historic trans-Sierran wagon route. It was made possible by private donations of these items over several decades to the California State Parks Archeology, History and Museums Division, Museum Initiative Unit, and by financial grants and private contributions.
A more complete accounting and many photographs of the event are presented at
Bridge Port Fall Festival 2013

Did you know?
The 150-year-old covered bridge at the South Yuba River State Park is the longest single-span wooden covered bridge in the world!
Why is the bridge closed?
The bridge is closed due to safety concerns. An engineering survey discovered structural problems so severe that the entire covered bridge could collapse and isn't safe for foot traffic. Over the last 150 years, old age and extreme weather conditions have resulted in: twisted arches, dry rot of structural supports, misalignment of end supports.
What's being done to save it?
The California Dept. of Parks and Recreation has completed an engineering report, and the total estimate for bridge repairs is approximately $1.1 million. The South Yuba River Park Association (SYRPA) is spearheading a
Save Our Bridge
campaign to raise the needed money. To date, SYRPA has:
Joined forces with the California State Parks Foundation to provide $21,000 to secure a federal grant through the CA Dept of Parks and Recreation.
Met with elected officials to gain their support.
Begun community fundraising efforts.
How can you help?
Approximately $600,000 is still needed to complete the restoration so that park visitors can once again walk across the covered bridge.
Make a contribution today to the South Yuba River Park Association designated for Bridge Restoration. Mail your check to: SYRPA, P. O. Box 1658, Penn Valley, CA 95946

150th Anniversary of the Covered Bridge Across the South Yuba River
Supervising Ranger Don Schmidt thanks all who helped take South Yuba River State Park off the California Park closure, most of whom were in the audience. As part of the 150th Anniversary celebration he recognizes families, dating back to 1850, who lived and worked at what is now the Bridgeport section of the park. Representatives of these families were also in the audience. In the process Don tells interesting history of the park.
