The Florida Keys 7: End/Beginning of U.S. Hwy. 1
United States Highway 1, one of the world's longest highways, has her southern terminus in Key West, Florida. People always want to take photos at this spot, yet in New Orleans, exactly zero people, every year, want to take a photo at the southern terminus of U.S. Hwy. 61.
Florida Keys Overseas Highway is named All-American Road
The Florida Keys Overseas Highway, from just north of Key Largo to Key West, is now an All-American Road.
The designation was announced Friday by Federal transportation officials, during a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
The Keys highway is the only All-American Road in Florida. It's the highest recognition possible under the National Scenic Byways program established by the U.S. Congress in 1991. Only 30 other roadways in the nation have earned the prestigious title.
Originally completed in 1938, the Overseas Highway incorporates 42 bridges over the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. They include the Seven Mile Bridge at Marathon, which stretches 6.79 miles across open water and was referred to on its completion as the eighth wonder of the world.
Under the Federal Highway Administrations National Scenic Byways program, roads can be recognized as National Scenic Byways or All-American Roads based on their archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational and scenic qualities.
To earn All-American Road status, a thoroughfare must possess characteristics of national significance and features that don't exist elsewhere, making it a visitor destination in itself.
The Overseas Highway follows a trail originally blazed in 1912 when Standard Oil millionaire Henry Flagler completed the extension of his Florida East Coast Railroad from Miami to Key West. Construction of the highway began after the railroad ceased following a 1935 hurricane.
In 1982, 37 of the original bridges including the Seven Mile Bridge were replaced with wider spans. Most of the historic bridges still stand alongside the newer ones and now serve as fishing piers for anglers.

Tour de Conch 2: Channel 5 Bridge - Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail Bike Ride
Crossing the Channel 5 bridge in the Florida Keys on my bike, March 2012. If you notice that I said there is no pedestrian bridge but you see one in the video - I misspoke. The pedestrian bridge (an old, historic bridge that is open for pedestrians and fishing but closed to vehicles) does not go all the way across the channel. There is a gap in the middle of it. Notice how much higher the new bridge is than the old one. I suppose that is to let tall sail boats pass under it.

Beginning in the late 1970s, a sinister presence cast a shadow over an isolated part of central Oregon. It lurked in the background, ignored or unnoticed. Women, often vulnerable or marginalized, were disappearing.
These are the stories of the ghosts of Highway 20.

Dennis HANISAK 12/13/17 Exploring Pulley Ridge: The Deepest Mesophotic Coral Reef
Full title: Exploring Pulley Ridge: The Deepest Mesophotic Coral Reef on the U.S. Continental Shelf
About the Speaker
Dr. M. Dennis Hanisak is a Research Professor at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute at Florida Atlantic University and Director of its Indian River Lagoon Observatory and Education program. His research has focused on the biology and ecology of marine plants, particularly macroalgae (seaweeds) and seagrasses. Since completing graduate school at the University of Rhode Island, he has conducted research primarily in Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. As Director of Harbor Branch's Education Program, Dr. Hanisak is dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation by students and the public of the importance of the oceans and their impact on our lives. Among other activities, he has led and developed innovative programs for university students, high school students, and the public. It is his belief that working scientists need to convey what they do, and why it is important, to students, resource managers, and the public, as well as to colleagues
About the Lecture
Mesophotic ecosystems are characterized by light-dependent communities typically at depths ranging from 30-40 m and extending to over 150 m in tropical and subtropical waters where water clarity is high, are poorly understood. These systems may act as refugia for species of corals and fish that are stressed or dying in shallow water due to global warming, disease, fishing pressure, and sedimentation from human activities.
Pulley Ridge (PR), located in the Gulf of Mexico, about 250 km west of the southwest Florida coast and at depths of 60-80 m, is the deepest mesophotic coral reef on the continental United States. A five-year study was funded by NOAA to understand coral ecosystem connectivity in the southeastern United States, from the mesophotic reefs at PR to the shallow-water reefs in the Florida Keys. PR’s benthic community was characterized by video surveys with remotely operated vehicles during four expeditions from 2012-2015. We documented a biologically diverse and dense community dominated by macroalgae, diverse sponges, and hard corals. We discovered a catastrophic loss of coral on PR’s main ridge since 2003. However, we also discovered dense populations of corals in an area never previously explored. Our data are an important baseline to better understand the long-term health and status of mesophotic coral ecosystems and are being used for making management decisions regarding these habitats and managed species.
Homosassa Springs (1970s)
Goat Island, a colony of monkeys and aquatic birds, is seen on the jungle boat ride at Homosassa Springs. The nature trail has otters, deer, goats and a hippo. There is an orchid greenhouse. Gators in a lagoon are fed by a woman dressed as an Indian maiden who dangles fish from a string. Also see BA058, Nature's Own Attraction - Homosassa. Produced by Studio Productions Inc.

Florida Keys - Drive through Big Pine Key, Bahia Honda and Marathon HD (2016)
The Florida Keys are a coral cay archipelago located off the southern coast of Florida, forming the southernmost portion of the continental United States. They begin at the southeastern coast of the Florida peninsula, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Miami, and extend in a gentle arc south-southwest and then westward to Key West, the westernmost of the inhabited islands, and on to the uninhabited Dry Tortugas. The islands lie along the Florida Straits, dividing the Atlantic Ocean to the east from the Gulf of Mexico to the northwest, and defining one edge of Florida Bay. At the nearest point, the southern part of Key West is just 90 miles (140 km) from Cuba. The Florida Keys are between about 23.5 and 25.5 degrees North latitude.
The climate of the Keys is defined as tropical savanna according to Köppen climate classification. More than 95 percent of the land area lies in Monroe County, but a small portion extends northeast into Miami-Dade County, such as Totten Key. The total land area is 137.3 square miles (356 km2). As of the 2010 census the population was 73,090 with an average density of 532.34 per square mile (205.54/km2),[1] although much of the population is concentrated in a few areas of much higher density, such as the city of Key West, which has 32% of the entire population of the Keys. The US Census population estimate for 2014 is 77,136.
The city of Key West is the county seat of Monroe County. The county consists of a section on the mainland which is almost entirely in Everglades National Park, and the Keys islands from Key Largo to the Dry Tortugas.

Tarpon Tales from 1929 in the Florida Keys
Tarpon fisherman set sail from Islamorada in the Floriday Keys in a 70 foot yacht towing a motor launch and several row boats to catch the silver king tarpon at the Bahia Honda Bridge.
This video was shot in 1929 with a 16MM camera. Given that there was no sound, there are a series of story boards explaining the action. Considering the timeframe of the video, you will notice the FEC train passing over the Overseas Railway. The video was shot 17 years after the completion of the Overseas Railway and five years before the 1935 Hurricane that ended service on this famed railway.
It is unclear of who shot this video, but it was restored by Captain Jim Sharpe of Seaboots Charter based in Summerland Key, Florida.
