The Factory
The Factory is a documentary film that focuses on the importance of factory work to 20th Century small-town America by detailing the rise and fall of what the locals called “The Factory” on South M-66 in Ionia, MI. As perhaps the most significant employer on the Grand River between Lansing and Grand Rapids, this facility made world-renowned reed and wicker furniture, fabricated jeep seats and tarpaulins for the American war effort in WWII, manufactured the famous ”Woody” station wagon, and assembled legendary “muscle cars” such as the Shelby Cobra and Corvette Stingray. Sadly, like so many older manufacturing facilities, “The Factory” was demolished in the 1990’s after a run of almost a century. This film was produced by TDMP faculty Joshua Pardon with assistance provided by students in the Television and Digital Media Production program at Ferris State University.

City Water Dept Dec 12 2011 (1)
Monday Dec 12 2011 City of Columbia workers back out there at the bridge removing old pipes by using a wench attached to the front of their vehicle and hauling up onto the Richland County side where it was then broken into pieces on the side of the road. One large piece was dragged all the way to the edge of my property and busted apart on the street before being loaded into the a City of Columbia truck. This was a blantant and I feel threatening message because of the attention I have brought about in The State Newspapers article on Dec. 11, 2011 of the raw sewage smell coming from the creek and their subsequent partial removal (recorded on Nov. 30, 2011) by the City of Columbia waste water department of the old sewage lines under the Bluff Road bridge and old CSX train trestle.
They are preparing to place a 180,000 foot (now concessioned down to 92,000 read FreeTimes Nov.30th-Dec.6th article) Wal-Mart in the floodplains of the forested areas next to the Historic Olympia Village. This could have been a park and an extension of the greenway proposed back in 2003 but was shot down by then City council members.
PLEASE PROTECT THIS CREEK AND THE WILDLIFE THAT LIVES HERE!!! ROCKY CREEK FEEDS INTO THE ALREADY POLLUTED CONGAREE RIVER!!!
SAY NO TO WALMART!!!
There are already six locations within a ten mile radius of downtown Columbia.
Olympia and Granby Villages are the last standing old mill villages still intake since 1896.
Save the forested areas and make the old baseball stadium into something more beneficial to the residents of Columbia. Make an urban garden is an idea. Hold youth baseball games another. Or even re-address the woodlands once again as a part of the Nature Greenway suggested in 2003.

Katherine (Birney) Reynolds (1881-1974)
This is the last video ever made of my Gonnie.. She is introduced by Dr, George Moore of the San Jose State University History Department.
Gonnie was the world's most renowned super-Catholic. Born August 6th, 1881 (tombstone says August 5, 1883.) She grew up in Lansing, Michigan. Born August 6th, 1881 (tombstone says August 5, 1883.) She grew up in Lansing, Michigan. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 1909 with an A.B. degree. That same year she married Dexter Belden Reynolds Sr. and moved to Oregon.
When my father was sick with cancer, my mother and I lived in Gonnie's house at 423 West Ionia Street in downtown Lansing, Michigan. The house was one block from Saint Mary's Catholic Church & school and four blocks from the state capital building. I think its years are numbered though, because the state office complex is now only a block away. Expansion to the north could take the whole block.
Gonnie's brothers were (by age) William, Eugene, James Emmitt, Joseph, Patrick, and Louis John Birney.
Within a year before Gonnie died, I had the pleasure of recording a television interview with her for use in a San José State University US History Since the Civil War TV course. Although she showed some signs of short-term memory loss, she was delighted to do the interview and to contribute to the project as a witness of change in the American Family. She talked with great authority about primitive life in John Day. With a smile on her face, she spoke of contacts with the local Indians. They don't knock, you know. They just come around your house peeking into the windows until they make eye contact (which always startled her and scared the heck out of her.) Then they expect you to come and open the door.
Gonnie died in Los Gatos Memorial Hospital in April 17,1974. (Date confirmed on both her tombstone and her Lavey funeral card.) I accompanied her to her funeral in Lansing Michigan, my first trip back to Michigan since 1950. Arrangements were made by the Lavey funeral home, the same one that buried my father and aunt together. Somebody there, who had not seen her in nineteen years, told me that they remembered my grandmother because she was the one that made arrangements for the double burial of her two children, a first and only for that particular funeral home. We miss you Gonnie. But, I hope this will see your incredible personality into the twenty second century.
