One day in Kazan, Russia. Things to do | 2018
My name is Daria and I live in Moscow. I decided to make a little trip to Kazan for one day.
Some facts.
Kazan is the sixth most populous city in Russia.
It is one of the host cities for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Population of Kazan is more than 1 243 500.
Kazan lies at the confluence of the Volga and Kazanka Rivers.
There are 2 official languages in Kazan: Russian and Tatarian. And they have 2 presidents.
Kazan’s subway has 10 stations.
There is an Aero express from the airport. It takes 30 minutes to get to the center. It costs 40 rubles, in comparison, in Moscow a ticket for aero express costs 500 rubles.
You will see many historical buildings, the beautiful Volga river, taste national sweets and dishes, meet calm people.
In comparison with Moscow this city is calm, the air is fresh, and the prices are lower.
Most interesting places are concentrated in the center of Kazan. Let’s start our trip.
-Bauman street – улица Баумана
-Epiphany Cathedral - Колокольня Богоявленского собора
- Monument Carriage of Catherine II
-The Kazan Kremlin is the heart of Kazan.
-The Kul Sharif Mosque is the great symbol of Kazan and the Republic of Tatarstan.
This Mosque was named after a real man who was a hero for people in Tatarstan
- Preobrazhenskaya Tower
- Söyembikä Tower (Башня Сююмбике )- a leaning tower of the city
-Annunciation cathedral - Благовещенский собор —
-Agricultural Palace «Дворец земледельцев» - Is a massive beautiful building, with a huge bronze tree in the middle, and a large green space around
-Puppet Theatre Ekiyat in Kazan

Moscow Chathedral Mosque - night view of outside / Cоборная мечет, Москваь
Night outside view of Moscow grand mosque. The new mosque building was opened in 2015. Moscow has a very large muslim population - actually largest in Europe (might be even 2-3 milions) - but only 6 mosques. Evening prayer was finished - I did not have time to visit the mosque inside.
Allahu Akbar!

STORYLINE:
On January 24th 2011 an explosion ripped through the international arrivals hall at Moscow's busiest airport, killing at least 31 people and wounding nearly 170, Russian officials said.
Two Britons were among the dead.
The Russian president called it a terror attack.
Russian investigators and eye-witnesses said a suicide bomber most likely carried out the attack.
Some Russian media reports said the bomb was packed with shrapnel, screws and ball bearings.
The terminal at Domodedovo Airport was engulfed by smoke and passengers splattered with blood.
I entered (the doctors' room) and I was told my head was injured - but it was just another person's remains, blood from them, said eye witness Artyom Zhilinkov, who was himself uninjured in the attack.
Zhilinkov said he was just a few yards (metres) away from the explosion when it went off.
I just raised my head and here came the blast, he said. I saw the suitcase, the suitcase was on fire, and I saw the man from behind. So, either the man blew up something, or something went off on the man's body, or the suitcase went off.
Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said the bombing was most likely carried out by a suicide bomber and that authorities were trying to identify him.
The Interfax news agency, citing law enforcement sources, said the head of the suspected bomber had been found.
President Dmitry Medvedev immediately ordered authorities to beef up security at Moscow's two other commercial airports and other key transport facilities.
Medvedev postponed his own planned departure Tuesday for the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he was to give the opening address on Wednesday.
The spokesman for Russia's Anti-Terror Information Centre, Nikolai Sentsov, said 35 people had been killed.
The Emergencies Ministry, however, said 31 people were killed, 74 hospitalised with injuries and 94 were given medical treatment.
The discrepancy could not immediately be explained.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the explosion, which occurred at 4:32 pm local time (1342GMT).
Hours later, passengers arriving for their flights lined up outside waiting to pass through metal detectors that had been installed at all entrances.
At least 20 ambulances and 10 fire trucks remained outside.
Eurocontrol, the European air traffic control agency in Brussels, said Domodedovo was briefly closed to air traffic immediately after the blast, but soon reopened.
Built in 1964, Domodedovo is located 26 miles (42 kilometres) southeast of the centre of Moscow and is the largest of the three major airports that serve the Russian capital, serving over 22 million people last year.
It is generally regarded as Moscow's most up-to-date airport, but its security procedures have been called into question.

Religion in Russia
Religion in Russia is diverse, with a 1997 law naming Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Judaism as important in Russian history. Orthodox Christianity (Russian: Православие Pravoslaviye) is Russia's traditional and largest religion, deemed a part of Russia's historical heritage in a law passed in 1997. Russian Orthodoxy is the dominant religion in Russia. About 95% of the registered Orthodox parishes belong to the Russian Orthodox Church while there are a number of smaller Orthodox Churches. However, the vast majority of Orthodox believers do not attend church on a regular basis.
