SANTA FE, USA - travel shorts
Welcome to 'the city different,' a place that makes its own rules without ever forgetting its long and storied past. Walking through its historic neighborhoods, or around the busy Plaza that remains its core, there's no denying that Santa Fe has a timeless, earthy soul. Founded around 1610, Santa Fe is the second-oldest city and the oldest state capital in the US, and is all but unique in having not only preserved many of its seductive original adobe buildings, but also insisted that all new downtown structures follow the same architectural style. And yet, despite being home to the country’s oldest public building and throwing its oldest annual party, Fiesta, Santa Fe is also synonymous with contemporary chic, thanks to its thriving art market, gourmet restaurants, great museums, upscale spas and world-class opera.
At over 7000ft above sea level, Santa Fe is also the nation’s highest state capital. Sitting at the foot of the glowing Sangre de Cristo range, it makes a fantastic base for hiking, mountain biking, backpacking and skiing. When you come off the trails, you can indulge in chile-smothered local cuisine, buy turquoise and silver directly from Native American jewelers in the Plaza, visit remarkable churches, or simply wander along centuries-old, cottonwood-shaded lanes and daydream about some day moving here.
Santa Fe’s mind-boggling assortment of characters include traditional and avant-garde artists, New Age hippy transplants, Spanish families that have called the city home for centuries, Mexican immigrants, retirees from both coasts, and more than a few Hollywood producers and movie stars. Most are drawn above all by the relaxed attitude, the sense of space, the unbeatable climate and that certain something that gives Santa Fe a singularly alluring essence.

Twenty-six miles North of Santa Fe in the town of Espanola, one can take the River Road which is sixty miles to Taos and return to Espanola on the High Road which is only fifty-two miles. The Enchanted Circle byway is an eighty-four-mile circle which starts in Taos and takes one North, then East across the Sangre De Cristo Mountains and back down to Taos.
The Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument is a remarkable outdoor laboratory, offering an opportunity to observe the geological processes that shape natural landscapes. The cone tent shaped rocks were formed millions of years ago due to volcanic eruptions from the Jemez volcanic field. As a result of uniform layering of volcanic material bands of gray with beige and pink colored rock formed along the cliff face. Over time, rain and wind cut into the deposits creating canyons. The tent formations found throughout the canyon vary in height from a few feet to as high as ninety feet. The monument covers 5,610 acres of public land with an elevation of 5,570 feet to a height of 6,760 feet.
Canyon road, just a few blocks from historic Santa Fe is a place where one can find most any type of art the heart desires. The road is a half mile walk one way, and here one will find 100 galleries and restaurants.

Fairview Cemetery Santa Fe, New Mexico
Fairview is Santa Fe’s only non-Catholic pioneer cemetery and its history begins long before the May 7, 1884, date of its founding. The earliest headstone is dated 1862 and was among those moved 1895-1903 from the old Masonic-Oddfellows Cemetery downtown which was located where the Scottish Rite Cathedral now stands and extended to the site of the present Plaza del Monte.

Route 66: Day 7 & 8 (Amarillo, TX - Santa Fe, NM)
Full Route 66 Tour:
Route 66, Day 7:
Today you leave Texas and are on your way into “The Land of Enchantment”, New Mexico – after passing through the world famous Cadillac Ranch. How about the ghost town of Glen Rio, where you can stand with one foot in New Mexico and the other one in Texas? From there we enter the land the Comanche Indians, where mesas, mountains, cactus and pines define the landscape as head up into the High Plains and altitude of Santa Fe in central New Mexico. Santa Fe is one of America’s oldest and most beautiful cities, and will be our base for the next two nights.
Route 66, Day 8:
Today is at leisure to rest and enjoy the distinctive flavor of this nearly 400-year-old city. The blend of cultures here becomes evident in the southwestern architectural style so closely associated with New Mexico’s capital city. Perhaps you would like to take a ride along the river valley to the old Native American Indian town of Taos, enjoy a sunrise hot air balloon ride, or play cowboy for a day on a horseback ride along a mountain or canyon trail. Santa Fe provides all of these opportunities and more.

Santa Fe FP45 108
On July 21, 2018, Bruce Harris (of Yucaipa, CA) went to the Orange Empire Rail Museum in Perris, California. Shown here ATSF FP45 No. 108, in completely restored operating condition.
The EMD FP45 is a cowl unit type of C-C diesel locomotive produced in the United States by General Motors Electro-Motive Division (EMD). It was produced beginning in 1967 at the request of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, which did not want its prestigious Super Chief and other passenger trains pulled by freight style hood unit locomotives, which have external walkways. The railroad preferred a cowl unit.
The EMD SDP45 was a good passenger locomotive, but to the Santa Fe Railway it did not look the part. EMD therefore designed a lightweight cowl body to cover the locomotive, though it did not, as in earlier cab units, provide any structural strength, which remained in the frame. The cowl provided sleeker looks, better aerodynamics at speed, and allowed the crew to enter the engine compartment en route for diagnostics and maintenance. Final drive gear ratio for passenger service was 59:18.
