Milwaukee: A City Built on Water | Program |
[Original Airdate: April 22, 2015]
Historian John Gurda explores how the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan spurred Milwaukee's growth. The settlers used rivers and Lake Michigan to transport grain, lumber, leather and beer, but water was just as important for play as it was for work. Gurda explains how the Milwaukee River became a destination for fun. Learn how the lower Milwaukee River was eventually reduced to an open sewer by 1900, with Lake Michigan suffering similar indignities. Only in recent decades have the currents turned for the better. From the Milwaukee River Greenway to the reborn Menomonee Valley to the cultural theme park on our downtown lakefront, the patterns of the past are being reversed, providing cause for celebration as well as concern.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Manitowoc (#711)
[Latest Airdate: July 5, 2018]
[Original Airdate: March 8, 2018]
Manitowoc is a city on the eastern shore of Wisconsin, north of Sheboygan and south of Green Bay that John McGivern LOVES! No, we mean it.
Visits to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum and exploration of the SS Badger were the beginning of his enchantment. Then he was introduced to beach glass, reminisced with an Evergleam Christmas tree collector, and explored Jagemann Stamping and Briess Malt and Ingredients Co. He had a Diet Coke with Kathie at the Stage Door Pub, made a belt at Leatherwerks and checked in to Dead by Dawn --- not sure that he would ever check out! But the cherry on the top was provided by Beerntsen's Confectionary and Cedar Crest Ice Cream! Yum! What's not to love?
Fair warning to those in Manitowoc: Don't be surprised if some day there's a Manitowoc mailbox with John's name on it. By being so inviting, you asked for it, Manitowoc!

America's Best Fall Getaways (Fall Foliage and Travel Video)
America's best fall getaways that showcase beautiful fall colors and foliage - Sedona, Arizona, Litchfield, Bucks County and Great Smoky Mountains.
I'd like to show you the top fall destinations in the United States.
Sedona, Arizona, known for its majestic beauty, is home to winding, gorgeous hiking trails and canyons. In the fall, the trails are surrounded by stunning leaves hanging from some of the most towering trees visitors can expect to see. Serene natural water, running streams bypassing stones small and large create awe inspiring calmness. A trip through Sedona in the fall, where massive rocks, flowing waters, contrasting colors and natural beauty await, will surely make a lasting impression.
Litchfield Hills, Connecticut is a quaint New England area, offering scenic fall views and charming amenities. Rolling hills, colorful tree lined countryside landscapes, and crystal clear rivers are what make this place a unique fall destination. Its beauty amazes tourists and locals alike with just a walk along one of the various trails or a drive through this historic gem.
Bucks County, Pennsylvania, is an original fall attraction. Sprawling farmlands, lakes surrounded by colorful maple and oak trees allow for an old fashioned American traveling experience. Several historic buildings yield a nostalgically attractive habitat. Bucks County houses state parks and recreation areas permitting walking or biking trips. A trip through this picturesque community provides a truly memorable autumn adventure.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina is a widely known and visited fall haven. Encompassed by mountain views, miles upon miles of trails, and rapidly flowing luminous water, this Park accommodates for a one of a kind, genuine experience. The park maintains several historic districts, campsites and a seemingly endless forest of trees possessing deeply pigmented leaves. The fall sights, scents, and memories that can be encountered here will unquestionably remain in one's heart.

California was lashed Friday by heavy rains that the parched state desperately needs, though with the soaking came rescues from swollen rivers, power outages and the threat of mudslides. Even with rainfall totals exceeding six inches in some places by midday, the strong Pacific storm did not put a major dent in a drought that is among the worst in recent history.
Lewis Cooper, 84, took a stroll down his Glendora street during a lull in the rain Friday afternoon. He lives in green 1879 farmhouse next to a red 1885 barn, which he bought from its original builder after he came home from the Korean War, when the home was surrounded by orange groves instead of tidy suburban homes.
Some friends helped him build a wall of sandbags to keep the mud from collecting on his low front porch.
I expected to see a lot more gravel and rocks and mud. That didn't occur. So evidently they've done a pretty good job up above here, he said. I'm sure some of those little streets up there are probably in jeopardy.
No one advised him to evacuate. The mud was on that side and that side, he said, pointing to opposite corners of his house. There was sandbags across here and none of the mud got in the house. But as of noon Friday, the water trickled clear around his house.

Black Georgetown Remembered
As part of its bicentennial celebration in 1988-89, Georgetown University honors this remarkable community in a documentary video titled Black Georgetown Remembered. Through the recollections of the members of the Georgetown black community, some of whom still reside in Georgetown, the documentary pays tribute to a community that thrived amidst slavery, Jim Crow laws, and economic inequity to emerge with a rare strength and identity. It features the remembrances of the decades of the 1940s to the 1950s when the population of Georgetown changed markedly.
This video complements the book Black Georgetown Remembered first published in 1991 and now available in a 25th anniversary commemorative hardcover edition:

Trump's Deficit-Bursting Budget Revealed
Deficit’s don’t matter anymore. Cenk Uygur, the host of The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
Read more here:
“WASHINGTON — President Trump on Monday sent Congress a $4.4 trillion budget with steep cuts in domestic programs and entitlements, including Medicare, and large increases for the military, envisioning deficits totaling at least $7.1 trillion over the next decade.
The blueprint, which has little to no chance of being enacted as written, amounts to a vision statement by Mr. Trump, whose plan discards longtime Republican orthodoxy about balancing the budget, instead embracing last year’s $1.5 trillion tax cut and new spending on a major infrastructure initiative.
The plan does not completely embrace the two-year budget deal struck by Congress and signed by Mr. Trump last week to boost both domestic and military spending by $300 billion. Mick Mulvaney, Mr. Trump’s budget director, informed House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, Republican of Wisconsin, in a letter that the president is proposing to pour much of the increased domestic spending in that package into defense and fixing “some longtime budget gimmicks” that have added to the nation’s deficits.
“The administration does not believe these nondefense spending levels comport with its vision for the proper role and size of the federal government,” Mr. Mulvaney wrote.
That bill, which President Trump signed into law last week, would increase military spending by $195 billion over the next two years and increase nondefense spending by $131 billion over that period. But Mr. Trump’s budget proposal calls for a different approach and says Congress should not spend that non-defense money.”

13 Territorial Convention Site (Myrtle & Main Street)
When Wisconsin became a state in 1848, there was uncertainty about the legal status of the lands between the St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers. On August 26, 1848, a gathering was held at John McKusick's store in Stillwater. This convention elected Henry Sibley to represent their interests in Congress with the goal being the establishment of the Minnesota Territory. The following year, Congress formally approved organization of the new territory, extending from the new state of Wisconsin on the east to the Missouri River on the west.
The Greatest Land Deal in History: The Louisiana Purchase and the Destiny of America (2003)
The Louisiana Purchase (French: Vente de la Louisiane Sale of Louisiana) was the acquisition of the Louisiana territory (828,000 square miles) by the United States from France in 1803. About the book:
The U.S. paid fifty million francs ($11,250,000 USD) and a cancellation of debts worth eighteen million francs ($3,750,000 USD) for a total of sixty-eight million francs ($15,000,000 USD). The Louisiana territory included land from fifteen present U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. The territory contained land that forms Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska; the portion of Minnesota west of the Mississippi River; a large portion of North Dakota; a large portion of South Dakota; the northeastern section of New Mexico; the northern portion of Texas; the area of Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado east of the Continental Divide; Louisiana west of the Mississippi River (plus New Orleans); and small portions of land within the present Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Its population was around 60,000 inhabitants, of whom half were colored.[1]
The Kingdom of France controlled the Louisiana territory from 1699 until it was ceded to Spain in 1762. Napoleon in 1800, hoping to re-establish an empire in North America, regained ownership of Louisiana. The dream of a new empire failed[why?] and Napoleon decided to sell Louisiana to the United States. The Americans originally sought to purchase only the port city of New Orleans and its adjacent coastal lands, but quickly accepted the bargain. The Louisiana Purchase occurred during the term of the third President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson. Before the purchase was finalized, the decision faced Federalist Party opposition; they argued that it was unconstitutional to acquire any territory. Jefferson agreed that the U.S. Constitution did not contain explicit provisions for acquiring territory, but he did have full treaty power and that was enough.
After the early explorations, the U.S. government sought to establish control of the region, since trade along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers was still dominated by British and French traders from Canada and allied Indians, especially the Sauk and Fox. The U.S. adapted the former Spanish facility at Fort Bellefontaine as a fur trading post near St. Louis in 1804 for business with the Sauk and Fox.[37] In 1808 two military forts with trading factories were built, Fort Osage along the Missouri River in western present-day Missouri and Fort Madison along the Upper Mississippi River in eastern present-day Iowa.[38] With tensions increasing with Great Britain, in 1809 Fort Bellefontaine was converted to a U.S. military fort, and was used for that purpose until 1826.
During the War of 1812, Great Britain and allied Indians defeated U.S. forces in the Upper Mississippi; the U.S. abandoned Forts Osage and Madison, as well as several other U.S. forts built during the war, including Fort Johnson and Fort Shelby. After U.S. ownership of the region was confirmed in the Treaty of Ghent (1814), the U.S. built or expanded forts along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, including adding to Fort Bellefontaine, and constructing Fort Armstrong (1816) and Fort Edwards (1816) in Illinois, Fort Crawford (1816) in Prairie du Chien Wisconsin, Fort Snelling (1819) in Minnesota, and Fort Atkinson (1819) in Nebraska.
The American government used $3 million in gold as a down payment, and issued bonds for the balance to pay France for the purchase. Earlier that year, Francis Baring and Company of London had become the U.S. government's official banking agent in London. Because of this favored position, the U.S. asked the Baring firm to handle the transaction. Francis Baring's son Alexander was in Paris at the time and helped in the negotiations.[39] Another Baring advantage was a close relationship with Hope and Company of Amsterdam. The two banking houses worked together to facilitate and underwrite the Purchase.
Because Napoleon wanted to receive his money as quickly as possible, the two firms received the American bonds and shipped the gold to France. Napoleon used the money to finance his planned invasion of England, which never took place.
Kenosha Lighthouse, Wisconsin, USA from Travel with Iva Jasperson
Kenosha Lighthouse, Wisconsin, USA from Travel with Iva Jasperson
Hello everyone...
The Kenosha North Pier lighthouse or Kenosha Light is a lighthouse located near Kenosha in Kenosha County, Wisconsin.
A typical 'Lake Michigan red tower', it is a sibling to the Milwaukee Pierhead Light. This light was built in 1906 as a replacement for the old Kenosha Light.
The station was established in 1856. This pierhead light is one of a succession of lighthouses in this location, which were needed as the structures were destroyed by natural processes, or became obsolete as the piers were greatly extended.
Located on the north pier, it is listed in the United States Coast Guard light list and the United States Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System as the Kenosha Light. It currently is painted red, but the lighthouse also has been painted white in the past. The adjacent south pier and breakwater also had lighthouses, but now have cylindrical navigational lights. These included fog signal buildings and elevated iron catwalks, all of which have been removed.
In June 2008, the Kenosha Pierhead Lighthouse was deemed excess by the Coast Guard. Pursuant to the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000, it was offered at no cost to eligible entities, including federal, state and local agencies, non-profit corporations, educational agencies, or community development organizations. A deadline of July 21 was created for qualified organizations to express interest. At this time, no organization came forward.
In 2011, the excess property was put up for auction and was purchased by John Burhani and Heather McGee. The lighthouse is currently being used as an art studio and gallery as its name now conveys; Kenosha Lighthouse Studio. Art shows, open to the public, can be found on the kenoshalighthousestudio.com website. The Kenosha Lighthouse Studio is open for individual dinners/meetings and other events.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Prairie du Chien (#306)
[Latest Airdate: June 15, 2017]
[Original Airdate: February 13, 2014]
This is an old river town, so sometimes it's tough to sort the facts from the myths. Ghosts in old jails, fish that fall from the sky on New Year's Eve that people kiss, grannies who play basketball, and a man that makes jerky out of just about every creature he catches: Only in Prairie du Chien are those things facts.
Also facts: You can absorb late 19th century family life at Villa Louis, sympathize with the British and American soldiers who fought the only Wisconsin battle of the War of 1812, contemplate the lives of Native Americans by visiting the Indian Effigy Mounds, and then consider the history of the entire universe with the Starsplitters! After that, rejoin life in the early 21st century and eat, shop, quilt, play cards, gaze at the Mississippi, and go to Mass at the oldest Catholic parish in Wisconsin.
John Gurda told us that Prairie du Chien means field of the dog. Since John McGivern took Spanish in high school instead of French, he thought it meant a prairie of chins. See why we need John Gurda?

Movement to Take Down Thousands of Dams Goes Mainstream
One of the first of those was the White Clay Creek dam, built in 1776 or 1777 by the mill owner and Quaker minister Daniel Byrnes. Byrnes's nearby house was the site of a historic meeting on September 6, 1777, when George Washington, the Marquis de Lafayette, and several other Continental Army officers gathered there to plan the defense of Philadelphia. Though Washington lost the subsequent battle against the British, he won the war. Today, the same might be said of White Clay Creek.
