The Monuments of the Great Patriotic War were built in Kyiv by the Soviets. These monuments were made to honor the sacrifices of those who fought in World War II. Crossing of the Dnieper, Alley of the Hero Cities, and the Motherland Monument are part of a greater complex that makes up the War Museum. This complex also includes the Museum of Foreign Wars and the WWII Museum.

The centerpiece of the complex is the gigantic 200+ feet high Motherland Monument honoring those who fought against the Germans in World War II.
Paul’s risky adventure to Kiev, Ukraine was primarily to cover the September 16, 2014 Ukraine Parliament ratification of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement and to assess the aftermath ramifications of the Ukraine’s historic February 18-22, 2014 Ukraine “Euromaidan” Revolution.
The “Euromaidan” movement ’s creation was originally motivated by the pro-Russian government’s 2013 termination of the proposed Association Agreement between the European Union and the Ukraine. Since then, the movement has morphed into a movement to terminate the pro-Russian government, end the dysfunctional historical relationship with Russia, end public corruption and reform Ukrainian society by guaranteeing its citizens basic human/civil rights.
After protests/unrest began in November, 2013, Kiev’s Independence Square became the main site where the final violent confrontations of the February 18-22, 2014 Ukraine “Euromaidan” Revolution took place. The revolution resulted in the Ukraine’s pro-Russian government being overthrown and the establishment of a more democratic, transparent pro-European Ukrainian government. During the violent clashes between Euromaidan supporters and the police, a 100+ people were killed and 1,000+ were injured by police gun fire/brutality in Independence Square where there are now shrines/monuments to the brave Ukrainians who gave their lives.

War Witness Heritage, Ep 7: Battle of the Dnieper
After the Battle of Kursk, the Soviet Army was in a position to attempt to liberate Kiev and the Ukranian SSR. On August 26, 1943, the Soviet Army kicked off the first phase of the battle by crossing the Dnieper River to advance on German forces positioned on the other side. By the time the offensive was completed, the German Army had retreated back into Romania and the Soviet Army had occupied parts of Romania, resulting in an impressive Soviet victory. The conflict lasted approximately 4 months at a cost of between approximately 1.5 to 3 million lives.
