10 Things to do in Porto, Portugal Travel Guide Video Transcript: (OPORTO)
Lisbon is beautiful, but Porto is magical. We arrived in Porto with our taxi driver’s words still ringing in our ears, and we’re happy to say, the city did not disappoint!
Our time in Porto was spent sipping on Port wine, soaking in the views across the Douro River, wandering through the hilly streets, and marvelling at buildings covered in blue tiles.
In this travel guide, we’re going to share a little bit of Porto’s magic with you, and also show you some of the things you too can see, eat, and drink when you visit Porto!
Known as the Chapel of Souls, this church is covered in tiles that represent moments in the life of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Catherine.
This bookstore is a feast for the eyes. The bookstore was even frequented by JK Rowling when she taught English in Porto, and it’s reported to have been an inspiration in her Harry Potter series.
We continued our walk downhill until we reached the São Bento Train Station.
Porto Cathedral is one of the oldest landmarks in the city with cloisters where the walls are covered in blue tiles.
We reached the neighbourhood of Ribeira, which sits right on the shores of the Douro River. This neighbourhood is lined with many sidewalk cafes, bars, and restaurants, so it’s a nice place to rest your legs and do a bit of people watching. Feeling hungry we wandered down some of the back streets until we found a small restaurant serving up local specialities.
We made time for one more attraction: the Church of Saint Francis.
The Bridge we had all been waiting for was Dom Luis the first Bridge, which spans the Douro River. The lower deck carries regular traffic with narrow walkways for those on foot, and the upper deck is reserved for pedestrians and the metro lines.
For the best views of Porto, you need to walk the upper deck!
There was only one thing on our minds: visit one of the many wineries that line this side of the river! We ended up walking into Croft for a wine tasting without need for an appointment, and this turned out to be one of our favourite activities in Porto!
Filled to the brim with port wine, cheese and chocolate, we enjoyed a light stroll along the Douro River, watching the boats bob in the water.
That’s a wrap for our visit to Porto! We hope you guys enjoyed following along and that you got a few ideas for your own trip. If you have any other suggestions of fun things to do in and around Porto, feel free to share those with travellers in the comments below.
This is part of our Travel in Portugal video series showcasing Portuguese food, Portuguese culture and Portuguese cuisine.

Porto – Portugal – City tour
Portugal is in the west of the Iberian Peninsula. Porto is in the north of Portugal, on the estuary of the river Douro. Earlier Porto was the industrial city of Portugal. In Lisbon Portugal was ruled, in Coimbra was studied and in Porto was worked.
In recent years, Porto has turned into a wonderful tourist destination. With its picturesque old town, the promenade along the banks of the Douro under the impressive Ponte Luís I, the long promenade along the Douro estuary and the endless beach promenade along the Atlantic coast, Porto is now worth to be visited more than only one day.
The culinary diversity, the history of port wine, many historic buildings and the famous Azulejos framed by the hospitality of the Portuguese, complete the experience.

Porto has been named the hidden Gem of Europe, and it's not hard to tell why.
I had a great experience walking around this little city. There is much to see, but it is also a beautiful place to sit, relax and enjoy the views while sipping a glass or two of Port wine.
Watch the video and you will discover the history of Porto, it's ties to Harry Potter and the sweet taste of Port.

Porto’s People-Friendly Vibe
It’s Day 60 of my 100-day trip to Europe, and I’m in Porto — Portugal’s “second city”:
Porto is real. Its economy isn’t driven by tourism, but by hard work, good governance, and a great urban vision. Walk with me (past a couple using my Rick Steves Portugal guidebook — always a happy sight) through what used to be a parking lot and is now a romantic olive grove in the middle of Portugal’s second city.

A Peek at Porto’s Temporary Bolhão Market
Porto, Portugal’s second city, is a bit stressed out. Its beloved Bolhão Market had gotten really dilapidated and, earlier this year, it was closed for a much-needed renovation. The vendors — with a firm promise that they’d be back home in July of 2020, and with the reassuring presence of their Virgin of the Immaculate Conception — are carrying on in the basement of a nearby department store...and so are those shopper-merchant relationships that literally go back generations. Follow me for a peek at Porto’s temporary Bolhão Market.
7 Days in Porto in February | Mini Travellers
We spent February half term Exploring Porto with Kids. As a family of 5 we flew from Liverpool with Ryanair to Porto for only £220 (yes that price was for all of us) so it was a fabulously cheap thing to do for Half Term. On our first day we had a fabulous private tour of Porto with Kids with Sara from Portoalities. Sara writes a blog Portoalities, and makes private tours in Porto and Northern Portugal. I found her whilst googling things to do in Porto with Kids and I am so very glad I did. If you decide to travel to Porto after reading this, or any of my upcoming posts, then I can highly recommend you get in touch with Sara to book a tour.
We loved this half day tour for a number of reasons but here are the main 5.
5 main reasons Sara made exploring Porto with Kids accessible
Sara was warm and engaging and made the history of Porto accessible to the kids as well as to us.
Sara helped to explain some of the basics of Porto history to us all which we were ashamed to say we knew little of.
Sara took us to a lovely Portuguese restaurant for lunch we wouldn’t have found on our own.
Sara gave us top tips for restaurants and cafes and also some Port tips!
Sara gave us a valuable introduction in how to get around and how all the major sights fit in, it saved us a lot of time.
Sara gave us top tips about what else to explore and where else to spend our time whilst in Porto!
So what did we do on the tour with Portolalities? How did we explore Porto with Kids?
Porto Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Porto in Portugal.
Situated in the north of Portugal, Porto is a cultural capital of Europe and birthplace of the nation.
The Torre Dos Clerigos is the symbol of the city and was built in the middle of the 18th century on a rock at the city's most elevated point. Two hundred twenty-five steps lead to a stunning view across the picturesque old harbor town and its carpet of red rooftops that nestle against the city's hills.
Porto has one of the most beautiful markets in Europe that contains a large inner courtyard completely encircled by arcades.
The narrow, deep river valley of the Douro is spanned by 5 bridges of which the most impressive is the Ponte Dom Louis. The Frenchman, Gustave Eiffel, constructed the gigantic two level bridge that connects Porto with its sister town, Vila Nova De Gaia.
Five bridges connect the banks of the River Douro where 2 of them are monuments that date back to the Industrial Revolution. The river has always been the city's lifeline and a trading route to the whole world. The entire river valley was designated as a vine growing area because it is where the world famous port wine is grown.
With all of its picturesque districts, including its Baroque splendor and the palatial houses of its elite, Porto has truly survived the march of time.

PORTO, PORTUGAL – First Day Exploring! (Livraria Lello and more)
After traveling thru Spain for almost two weeks, we flew to Portugal!
We didn’t have any expectations for Portugal, and honestly, didn’t know much about Porto. But, boy were we surprised!
Porto, Portugal is a fun and cool city to visit! We explored the beautiful architecture with decorated Portuguese tiles, took in the stunning views atop the river and wandered through the library that inspired Hogwarts’ design in the Harry Potter films!
But, that’s not all Porto has to offer. Luckily, we stayed a couple more days and continued the fun. Stay tuned for our next video from Porto!
Enjoy the video and we’ll see you in our next one as we keep GOING PLACES!

PORTO, PORTUGAL
Photo footage of my visits to Porto, Portugal in 2007 and 2016. Come with me and ejnoy this amazing city with my lens. ENJOY! :)
Porto is the second-largest city in Portugal after Lisbon, with 1.7 million inhabitants.
Porto was chosen as “The City to Visit This Year” by Forbes in 2017 and is a definite must-see city in Europe, even if it is just for a weekend break.
Located in the north of Portugal by the outlet of the Douro River, it has a unique atmosphere with elegant neighbourhoods and large villas sitting on narrow cobbled streets. This soulful city was classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996.
Porto is just the perfect size to explore by foot. You’ll enjoy wandering down its alleyways full of history and nostalgia. An evening walk along the Douro River, visiting the vibrant Mercado do Bolhão or sampling its renowned Port wine are just some of the many things you can do in this fascinating city.
Ep 09 | Exploring PORTO for the FIRST TIME // PORTUGAL
Today is our first day exploring Porto. We are very excited to be in a new country, a new country that neither of us has been to before. We started the day wandering around the area close to our hostel, before starting a free walking tour in the afternoon. The walking tour was based in the old town and covered the history of Porto and Portugal over the last 200 years. It was very interesting and you could tell the guide was passionate about not just his job but the history of Porto as well.
We stayed at The Passenger Hostel
