Hitchcock Nature Center
Experience some of the history and natural wonders of the Hitchcock Nature Center. Set in the rolling Loess Hills in Pottawattamie County, Hitchcock offers trails, camping and a beautiful landscape for outdoors enthusiasts to enjoy.
Hitchcock Nature Center
Located 5 mi. north of Crescent, this 1,300 acre preserve features Loess Hills Lodge interpretive facility with exhibits and programs for the whole family. the 45' observation tower gives visitors a 360-degree view of the Loess Hills and is home to the Hitchcock HawkWatch, one of the top 25 Hawk Watch stations in North America. Nearly 13 miles of hiking trails feature restored native prairie and woodland scenery with picturesque views of the Loess Hills. The park also boasts a 1/2 mile elevated handicapped-accessible boardwalk, a tent & RV campground, camping cabins and primitive campsites for thos who want to get away from it all. Honey Creek, Iowa - The Pottawattamie County Conservation hosts their monthly summer hiking series, Hitch Hike, at the Hitchcock Nature Center.
The hikes run May - September on the third tuesday of the month. Cost is $2 per person and includes on-trail refreshments.

What? A place to backpack in Iowa!
Turns out, there is a decent place to backpack in Iowa - Preparation Canyon State Park. This park has (8) hike in camp spots with tables and fire rings. The furthest spot is (1) mile from the parking spot, but you could easily get in several miles of hiking by hiking all the trails, plus there are a lot of valleys to climb in and out of.
