Yangon (Burmese: ရန်ကုန်; MLCTS: rankun mrui, pronounced [jàŋɡòũ mjo̰]; also known as Rangoon) is a former capital of Burma and the capital of Yangon Division. Although the military government has officially relocated the capital to Naypyidaw since March 2006,[3] Yangon, with a population of four million, continues to be the country's largest city and the most important commercial center.
Yangon's infrastructure is relatively undeveloped compared to those of other major cities in Southeast Asia. Yangon has the largest number of colonial buildings in Southeast Asia today.[4] While many high-rise residential and commercial buildings have been constructed or renovated throughout downtown and Greater Yangon in the past two decades, most satellite towns that ring the city continue to be deeply impoverished.
Yangon was founded as Dagon in the 6th century AD by the Mon, who dominated Lower Burma at that time. Dagon was a small fishing village centered about the Shwedagon Pagoda. In 1755, King Alaungpaya conquered Dagon, renamed it Yangon, and added settlements around Dagon. The British captured Yangon during the First Anglo-Burmese War (182426) but returned it to Burmese administration after the war. The city was destroyed by a fire in 1841.[5]
The largest and best maintained parks in Yangon are located around Shwedagon Pagada. To the southeast of the gilded stupa is the most popular recreational area in the city Kandawgyi Lake. The 150 acre (60.7-hectare) lake is surrounded by the 110 acre (44.5-hectare) Kandawgyi Nature Park,[24] and the 69.25 acre (28-hectare) Yangon Zoological Gardens, which consists of a zoo, an aquarium and an amusement park.[25] West of the pagoda towards the former Hluttaw (Parliament) complex is the 130 acre (53-hectare) Peoples Square and People's Park, (the former parading ground on important national days when Yangon was the capital.)[26] A few miles north of the pagoda lies the 37 acre (15-hectare) Inya Lake Park a favorite hangout place of Yangon University students, and a well-known place of romance in Burmese popular culture.
Hlawga National Park and Allied War Memorial at the outskirts of the city are popular day-trip destinations with the well-to-do and tourists.

Royal Lake:
Kandawgyi Lake literally great royal lake, formerly Royal Lake), is one of two major lakes in Yangon, Burma (Myanmar). Located east of the Shwedagon Pagoda, the lake is artificial; water from Inya Lake is channelled through a series of pipes to Kandawgyi Lake. It was created to provide a clean water supply to the city during the British colonial administration. It is approximately 5 miles (8 km) in circumference, and has a depth of 20 to 45 inches (50 to 115 cms). The 150 acres (61 ha) lake is surrounded by the 110 acres (45 ha) Kandawgyi Nature Park, and the 69.25-acre (28-hectare) Yangon Zoological Gardens, which consists of a zoo, an aquarium and an amusement park.
The Karaweik is a famous icon along Kandawgyi Lake's shores. The lake itself is bounded by Natmauk Street to its north and east, Bahan Street to its west, and Kanyeiktha Street to its south. Along the eastern shorelines of the lake is the famous Karaweik, a concrete replica of a Burmese royal barge built in 1972. It houses a buffet restaurant today.
Yangon Central Railway Station:
Yangon Central Railway Station located in downtown Yangon, is the largest railway station in Myanmar. It is the gateway to Myanmar Railways' 3,126-mile (5,031 km) rail network whose reach covers Upper Myanmar (Naypyidaw, Mandalay, Shwebo), upcountry (Myitkyina), Shan hills (Taunggyi, Kalaw) and the Taninthayi coast (Mawlamyine, Ye).
The station was first built in 1877 by the British but destroyed by the retreating British in 1943 from advancing Japanese forces. The current station designed in traditional Burmese architectural style, making prominent use of indigenous tiered roofs called pyatthat, was completed in 1954, designed by U Tin. Yangon Central Railway Station has been designated a landmark building since 1996. In December 2007, the Yangon city government announced a master plan that will relocate Yangon Central to a satellite town, East Dagon, 32 kilometres (20 mi) from downtown at an unspecified date.
The following lines pass through or terminate at Yangon Central Station:
Yangon Circular Railway
Yangon-Mandalay Railway
Yangon-Mawlamyaing Railway
Yangon-Bagan Railway
Yangon-Aunglan-Bagan Railway
Yangon-Pyay Railway
Yangon Central Railway Station was first built in 1877 by the British to support Burma's first railway line, from Yangon to Pyay. The station was located on the southern side of the railway compound on the upper block of Phayre Street (now Pansodan Street) in the downtown area. The building was designed in the British Victorian style and the access roads were bordered by grassy lawns. The beauty of the property prompted locals to praise the new structure as the Fairy Station.
The station became a favorite target for Japanese bombers during World War II. In 1943 it was destroyed by British forces retreating to India.
The station was rebuilt following the war according to a design drawn by engineer Hla Thwin and based on Burmese traditional architectural styles. The new structure was 5110 square meters (55,000 sq ft) in size. To the north were grass lawns, gardens and wide access lanes. The new design was approved by the Railway Authority on 7 May 1946. Construction was started in January 1947 by engineer Sithu U Tin and completed in May 1954 at a total cost of K4.75 million. The opening ceremony of the new Yangon Central Railway Station was held on 5 June 1954.
The structure is listed on the Yangon City Heritage List.Wikipedia

My Favorite Food in Yangon, Myanmar 2016
Burmese food at its finest. This is a typical Burmese rice lunch set at Aun Thu Kha Restaurant. During the frantic lunch rush you should just sit down and order from a menu. it is more quiet, then coming directly up to the food prep station and ordering might be a better option because you can view your food. The traditionally cooked proteins were all excellent. None were too salty, which tends to happen in rice based dishes. Burmese flavors are very mild and nothing too extreme, which is what I generally prefer. My favorite dishes were the prawns and the brain... yes... brain.s
Make it a point to try a Burmese rice lunch when you're in Myanmar.
