Tokyo Model Trains Shopping Guide 4K - Part 1: Akihabara
In my recent trip to Tokyo, I made a video guide with some tips on all my favorite model train shops, N scale and HO scale, Kato, Tomix, MicroAce, Greenmax. In part 1, I'll take you with me in Akihabara, and visit all the shops I know.
In Part 2 I'll show you shops outside Akihabara: in Nakano Brodway and Shinjuku.
Here's the list of shops with time stamps:
1:15 Radio Kaikan (Volks)
2:43 Imon/Monta
5:09 Scaleton
6:30 Hobby Land Pochi
7:55 Popondetta
13:35 Chiyoda Rail
14:10 Tam Tam
17:00 Liberty
18:44 Yodobashi Camera
I apologize if most of the time the videos are a bit shaky, the problem is that in many shops they don't like you to shot videos, so you must be sneaky ;)

Train themed restaurants popular in Tokyo
LEAD IN
The morning commute by train is a hardship millions across the globe face every work day.
However trains are such a part of daily life in Tokyo that hungry diners feel at home in train themed restaurants.
STORYLINE:
In Japan, perhaps more than in any other country in the world, trains are essential for moving on a daily basis masses of commuters from and to the outskirts of its crowded cities.
While commuters may not be fond of the crowded conditions they face every day during the rush hour, trains are part of Japanese culture.
The train inspired curry restaurant Niagara located in the district of Yutenji (Tokyo), is a unique establishment whose interior resembles a train carriage.
Decorated with original items from an era that precedes diesel engines and electric trains, what distinguishes Niagara's from other rail themed establishments is the way food is delivered: by a small train.
Owner Naito Hirotoshi, or 'station master' as he likes to be called, says he never felt inclined to become a train driver or conductor himself, but has been fascinated by trains since his childhood.
By the time steam locomotives were phased out he started buying and collecting train parts and combined this hobby with his passion for cooking he explains.
In the mid sixties diesel engines and electric trains started to appear and old steam engines were being phased out. As they were being scrapped many parts became available and I was able to buy them.
His establishment is covered with train parts, plaques, doors, seats, ticket booths.
Despite the restaurant changing location three times, most recently in March 2013, the locomotive theme remained.
For Naito curry and trains are natural partners, both being popular with Tokyo residents.
But then he added a unique attraction, a train for delivering food to the tables.
When we first opened the restaurant we had lots of bits and pieces we used as decorations but I wanted something that moved. I think it took me about 10 years before we had this railway installed (for delivering food). I was really lucky that there were no other shops doing anything like what I was doing and this meant we got lots of customers Naito says.
Naito's son, Akiyoshi, is the restaurant manager and 'assistant station master'.
I think trains are a part of the Japanese culture. We have a railway system that covers the whole country and even though we use airplanes and cars a lot the vast majority of Japanese citizens use trains. Because of this I think trains are very close to the Japanese people's heart Akiyoshi says.
Many customers who visits the restaurants are train aficionados like Takayama Hideo who says he has lots of model trains at home.
We love model trains. We have so many in our house. Actually we have so many we can't really make use of them all.
In Tokyo's upscale district of Ginza, a more sophisticated train themed bar has been open for almost ten years.
Bar Ginza Panorama attracts mainly business people many of whom are involved in the railway business.
With a collection of over one hundred model trains, the bar has four tracks on which trains are rotated depending on a theme decided by bar manager Tomoyuki Hattori.
Hattori says many customers who visit Bar Ginza Panorama come to wind down after a long day at work and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere provided by the visuals of trains going by.
We have over one hundred model trains ranging from old ones to new ones. Out of these we pick out four on a regular basis (every two weeks) and we have them run on our miniature tracks. We have Shinkansen (Japanese bullet trains), old steam engines, freight trains, express trains and local trains. We usually run a mixture of these he says.
