A Timeless Legacy - Women Artists of Glacier National Park
The purpose of A Timeless Legacy is to honor the women artists of Glacier National Park. While there are many male artists who gained notoriety and made their livelihood off commissions and the sale of their paintings of the Park, the women who came have largely remained unrecognized. This exhibit will recognize those early bold, spirited women who overcame the challenges of society, weather and geography to paint in Glacier National Park. The show will also feature the work of four women artists working today: Carole Cooke, Kathryn Stats, Linda Tippetts and Rachel Warner. These women are continuing the legacy of their early pioneering sisters-in-art. By displaying early works side by side with the paintings of contemporary women artists, the exhibition demonstrates the tradition of women painting in Glacier National Park is indeed timeless.
The exhibit will be on display at the Hockaday Museum of Art in Kalispell, Montana, May 28 — July 18, 2015. A Timeless Legacy - Women Artists of Glacier National Park will feature works on loan from collections located all over the United States. The list of artists to be showcased includes Else Jemme, Nellie Knopf, Katherine Leighton, Elizabeth Lochrie, Merle Olson and Lucile Van Slyck.

Small Gift - Big Impact: Art Education at the Hockaday Museum of Art
Art education provides a foundation for creative learning. The Hockaday Museum of Art has been at the center of the Northwest Montana’s art learning and cultural experiences for nearly five decades. The Museum’s goal is to raise $20,000 by year-end for education and other programming.
In 2015 alone, over 8000 children visited the Hockaday for special exhibition-related tours, participated in art learning activities, experienced the Traveling Medicine Show outreach program, and took various art classes. Generous gifts from local financial institutions enabled Hockaday membership for all area schools.
With the additional funding, the Hockaday was able to add all Flathead Valley schools as members. Hockaday membership provides an open door for these school students to tour the Museum and participate in a diverse array of art-related activities and projects. The proven benefits of art learning are motor skills, inventiveness, visual learning, decision making, cultural awareness and academic achievement.
The Traveling Medicine Show brought the art and culture of the Plains Indians directly to school children by showing them exhibition pieces, having them participate in art activities, and listening to presentations by Blackfeet tribal members. From Fortine to Polson, and West Glacier to Kila, Director of Education Kathy Martin has spent 18 days in regional schools delivering this unique learning experience to 1,778.
The Hockaday’s quest to provide substantial programming offerings for these schools is an endeavor that the Hockaday Education Department takes seriously, but the challenge of obtaining adequate funding can be daunting with little state and federal funding. This challenge is why the Hockaday is asking the community for their help.
As part of a campaign to raise funds for its educational programming, the Hockaday has produced a new online video showcasing the Museum’s varied offerings and impacts of its successful classes, activities and outreach programs. Highlighting the core competencies, the recently produced video underscores the connections the Hockaday makes with thousands of young minds each year. Viewers may see the “Small Gift – Big Impact” video on hockadaymuseum.org or its YouTube channel.
Contributions as small as $25 will buy art supplies for one class, while a $100 gift will pay for one exhibition-related special program that may include a demonstration, presentation or other special activity. Bringing in one visiting instructor costs upwards of $500, and one Traveling Medicine Show visit to a school runs $800.
