Places to see in ( Dortmund - Germany )
Dortmund is a city in Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia region. It's known for its Westfalen Stadium, home to the Borussia soccer team. Nearby Westfalen Park is marked by the Florian Tower, with its observation platform. The Dortmund U-Tower is topped by a huge letter U and houses Museum Ostwall’s contemporary art exhibits. Rombergpark botanical garden has local trees and greenhouses with cacti and tropical plants.
Football (soccer) is a major Dortmund passion. Borussia Dortmund, the city’s Bundesliga (premier league) team, has won the national championships an impressive eight times. So it's actually quite appropriate that Dortmund was chosen as the site of the German Football Museum, which opened in 2015. Other attractions include several treasure-filled churches and high-calibre art museums.
As the largest city in the Ruhrgebiet, Dortmund once built its prosperity on coal, steel and beer. These days, the mines are closed and the steel mills quiet, with more zeitgeist-compatible high-tech industries having taken their place. Only the breweries are going as strong as ever, churning out oceans of beer and ale, much of it for export.
The city popping up first when people think of the Ruhr valley and that's no surprise. Being the largest Ruhr City, it is also the third largest by population after Cologne and Duesseldorf and the geographical center of the State North Rhine-Westphalia . Worldwide the City is foremost know for Beer (pale export/lager beer called Dortmunder) and the famous sports club Ballspielverein Borussia 09, Borussia Dortmund or BVB fort short. However, the city is so much more than the reputation (Football, Beer and Industry) and has itself no need to shy away from the Cities on the Rhine. And yes, the city is no classy beauty and rough at first glance, though pretty honest, adorable and cordially at the second.
Founded around 882, Dortmund became an Imperial Free City. Throughout the 13th to 14th centuries, it was the chief city of the Rhine, Westphalia, the Netherlands Circle of the Hanseatic League. After the Thirty Years' War the city was destroyed and decreased in significance until the onset of industrialization. The city then became one of Germany's most important coal, steel and beer centres. Dortmund acquired the nickname Stahlstadt (Steel City) in the 19th century, when it became the world center of steel production. Consequently the city was one of the most heavily bombed cities in Germany during World War II. The devastating bombing raids of 12 March 1945 destroyed 98% of buildings in the inner city center. This bombing raids with more than 1,110 aircraft was a record to a single target in World war II.The region has adapted since the collapse of its century long steel and coal industries and shifted to high technology biomedical technology, micro systems technology and also services.

DORTMUND - Zeche Zollern (Colliery Zollern)
DORTMUND -- Zeche Zollern (Colliery Zollern)
Undoubtedly one of the finest examples of industrial heritage in Germany is the Colliery Zollern in Dortmund. The colliery was built during the first industrial revolution between 1898 and 1904 and then as now belongs to one of the most remarkable architectural mining plant in the Ruhr-area. Almost the colliery would have been demolished in the sixties if they would not have become aware of the most spectacular buildings of the entire plant; the machine hall, a for those time modern time steel structure in the Art Nouveau, which housed advanced electric technology where other mines still without it. Besides the technical equipment are well worth seeing the marble panel and the oval-shaped main entrance with his colorful windows that show how they put value on representation at that time.

GERMANY: DORTMUND: 6000 STEEL WORKERS WALK OFF THEIR JOBS
German/Nat
Six thousand steel workers walked off their jobs in the central German city of Dortmund late Tuesday, in response to the planned merger of industrial giants Thyssen and Krupp.
Earlier in the day, around 30-thousand workers from both companies took to the streets in Germany's financial capital Frankfurt, venting their anger at the planned merger which they fear will cause large scale job losses.
Workers from both companies are blaming banks for promoting last week's hostile takeover bid by Krupp of its larger rival Thyssen.
The two companies have since decided to merge their steel operations, and final details on the proposed joint venture are due to be announced Thursday.
The planned merger of two of Germany's industrial giants has come up against strong resistance among its unionised workforce.
Tens of thousands of workers from the affected companies, Hoesch-Krupp and Thyssen, marched on Frankfurt early on Tuesday.
As night fell, steel workers at a local Krupp factory in Dortmund joined the disaffected in a walkout.
Waving the red and yellow banners of the powerful IG-Metall union, employees and their families arrived at the factory to hear their manager confirm their fears.
SOUNDBITE:(German)
We will then reduce the production by the middle to autumn this year to one converter line and one high oven.
SUPER CAPTION: Hans Wilhelm Grasshof, manager of Phoenix factory (Hoesch- Krupp)
Krupp and Thyssen are working out the last details for the merger of their steel operations.
A combination of the two companies' steel units would create one of the world's largest steel concerns - and the biggest in Europe.
Unions and workers say they fear a joint venture would spell major restructuring at the expense of thousands of jobs.
Thyssen currently employs 11-thousand people and Krupp has 66-thousand employees.
SOUNDBITE:(German)
This is my sixth employer and he finished me. I can't see a future anymore, I'm fifty years old now , and all I can do is shrug my shoulders.
SUPER CAPTION: Norbert Kurz, factory employee.
SOUNDBITE:(German)
This means that this region is dead, this region is condemned to death. I wanted to ask a question to Mr Grassof if he is tough enough to tell the parents which are here and all the children which were here tonight and to look into the children's faces.
SUPER CAPTION: Karl Heinz Hack, factory employee.
The German economy is struggling with more than four and a-half million jobless.
At twelve per cent, the unemployment rate is Germany's highest in 64 years.
