Holiday Twin Drive-In Movie Theater - In A Colorado Minute (Week 227)
--- ---
Fun highlights of this and last year's summer have been our evenings at the Holiday Twin Drive-In Movie Theater in Fort Collins, Colorado. Making it a romantic date or a whole party with friends - it's always a great time at the drive-in.
The Holiday Twin with its two screens offers you two different special behind-the-screen vistas: around one screen the sky opposite the sunset will show you the most lovely display of pink clouds; around the other screen you get to see the Foothills skyline accentuated by the setting sun behind the hills. So I highly recommend getting to the drive-in as soon as they open so you can get a great spot for your car, set-up your chairs, couch or deck out the bed of your truck with a mattress, grab some food and drinks and enjoy the views and the company you brought... all that even before the movie starts.
Supposedly, the USA used to have thousands of drive-in theaters. Today, there are only a few hundred left. The Holiday Twin is a family-run business and everyone working there is super nice. Even when a friend forgot to put on the emergency break and her car crashed into a fence, they were amazingly gracious. I love going to this theater and am grateful, we still get to experience this American cultural phenomenon and support a local family business.
The drive-in season is not quite over yet. But if neither I nor you make it again this year, there's always next summer...
Btw, in the time-lapse section of the video, you get to see a few of my friends and some subliminal advertising. If you can name the company, I'll send you something from them...
The song featured in the video is the instrumental version of “Water in the Creek” by Josh Woodward. his song is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 US License. Thank you, yet again, Josh!
In rather different news: I'm posting this video while on the road in South Dakota. I've already shot two upcoming videos yesterday... While I'm currently in Deadwood, I don't think I'll make a video about this town. You'll have to see it with your own eyes one day. Next I'm going to check out the graves of Wild Bill Hikok and Calamity Jane. It's a full on Americana Road Trip!!!

Fort Collins - In A Colorado Minute (Week 318)
- - Fort Collins is a college town in Northern Colorado that gets mentioned on many Best Cities in the US lists. It's also the town where I currently live. Fort Collins in Larimer County is perfectly situated along the Cache la Poudre River, between the Foothills of the Rocky Mountains and the Pawnee Grassland of the Great Plains. It's only 65 miles north of Colorado state capital Denver and about 35 miles south of Wyoming.
The town started as a military outpost of the US Army in 1864. Since then it has grown to 56 square miles and a population of about 150,000. Fort Collins sits 5,003 feet (1,525 meters) above sea level - but has enough river banks, lakes and the magnificent Horsetooth Reservoir for you not to miss the actual sea (too much).
Fort Collins is home to Colorado State University (CSU) and about 20 breweries; most notably New Belgium, Odell and (I suppose) Anheuser-Busch Brewing.
There are many perks to living in Fort Collins - and I tried to squeeze most of my favorites into this 1-minute video - plus CSU football ;-)
In order of appearance:
Rocky Mountains (featuring Longs Peak)
Historic homes with porches on tree-lined streets
Historic Old Town (downtown), after which Disney's Main Street was modeled
Pianos About Town
Concert venues (e.g., Aggie Theatre) and lots of bars (e.g., The Whiskey and my favorite: Surfside 7)
Micro-breweries (e.g., New Belgium Brewing)
Holiday Twin Drive-In movie theater
Colorado State University (shown is Hughes Stadium of the Colorado Rams football team)
Wildlife all around (e.g., deer)
Cache la Poudre River and...
... the 5 major bike trails that are off the main roads and let you escape into nature while actually crossing town (e.g., the bridge seen in the video is part of the Poudre Trail)
Lots of lakes and ponds (e.g. Arapaho Bend Ponds)
Horsetooth Mountain (although I prefer Arthur's Rock when it comes to hiking)
Horsetooth Reservoir!!!
Since moving to Colorado in 2013, I have shot a lot of 1-minute videos about individual places and events in and around Fort Collins. You can see a list of them here:
It's been long overdue for me to make a single video giving an overview of this charming town. This week seemed like the right choice because it's the first video I got to shoot with my new Panasonic GH4 camera. Most of the footage was shot on 4k (Yay!) but down-converted to 1080 for upload. I'm still learning the camera, which explains the somewhat awful shot of the deer - since I accidentally shot that in 1080 and then played around with the digital zoom. But I couldn't not put it in. He's looking right into the camera!
Fort Collins on a few best city lists:
Best Beer Town - USA Today
Best Places To Live - Livability.com
America's Top Cities for Bike Commuting: Happier, Too - The Atlantic
Not enough lists? Check out the truly ridiculously long list of Honors and Awards won by Fort Collins on the city's website.
Personally, I have a few gripes with Fort Collins - but there's no need to publish that list right here. I'll be happy to share the negative aspects of this place with you over a delicious New Belgium Blue Paddle or Slow Ride next time we meet.

An Early Morning Drive to Fort Collins!!! (Day 327 - 9.23.2015)
I leave North Platte, Nebraska in the early morning rain and make my way to Fort Collins, Colorado to hang out with my aunt and uncle for the week.

Locations: North Platte, Nebraska and Fort Collins, Colorado
The vlog starts off with me waking up super early, even before the sun, and packing up and heading out of my smokey hotel room. I then head over to get gas and am greeted by an odd sign stating You Are Nowhere. Through no additional work on my own the gas pump stopped exactly on the quarter.
I headed out on Interstate 80 toward the Colorado border and was given nothing but rain and more and more light cutting through the clouds. Eventually I crossed back into Colorado by using Interstate 76 and then made a short transition to US 6 and finally Colorado Route 14. Route 14 seemed super familiar to me and I couldn't immediately place my finger on why and then it hit me...Colorado Route 14 is Mulberry Street inside Fort Collins. It was shocking to me that I was going to be on this road for more than 100 miles and it's one that I knew exactly where it ended.
After arriving at the house an hour and a half later I went to work on a couple of items before heading back out to get some Chipotle. It was absolutely delicious and powered me to finishing up the editing on the vlog episode and get it uploaded on time.
After getting that done it was time to work some more before my family got home. When they did it was hours of fun to catch up and see how my family is doing and to generally exchange thoughts and perspectives on so many things.
Given that I had been up on short sleep the night ended very early for me.
I hope you all had a great Wednesday!

Douglas Reservoir - In A Colorado Minute (Week 286)
--- ---
Douglas Reservoir, often also called Douglas Lake, is a State Wildlife Area just north of Fort Collins in Larimer County, off county road 60. The reservoir's big attraction truly is the wildlife: lots of birds, including pelicans and herons, and plenty of fish, mainly trout and carp, which in the wetlands on the north end, you can see climbing out of the water. My footage of a carp doing just that was from a little too far away, so I didn't think it worth including.
Douglas Reservoir is a great place to go for a boat ride or to lounge on the east side beaches with a view of the Rocky Mountains Foothills on the other side of the lake - and of course for fishing. So we took our boat Slow Ride out for an afternoon and early evening of fishing and filming. It was both so invigorating and relaxing at the same time that we all left happy, if a bit sleepy, even Whiskey dog as you can see in the video.
I can't wait for next summer to spend more time on Douglas Lake...

Fort Collins Historic Armstrong Hotel
Built in 1923 the Historic Armstrong Hotel in Fort Collins housed 41 guest rooms and two large dining rooms. Today it houses guests and has dining on the street level.
Las Vegas Strip (Nevada) - In Another Minute (298)
No trip to Vegas without a visit to the Las Vegas Strip, the 4.2-mile long stretch of hotels and casinos along Las Vegas Boulevard South, just outside the Las Vegas city limits.
Actually, most of our trip (overlapping weeks 296 and 297), we spent on the Las Vegas Strip. And yes, it was fabulous!
Staying in the stylish Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas Hotel provided everything you'd want. Visual art everywhere. Delicious cocktails at the Vesper Bar and The Chandelier, which over 3 floors gives you the option to lounge at the top, inside or at the bottom of the sparkling chandelier. Of course, you can gamble to your heart's delight on the casino floor... and dance at the Marquee and eat and shop and... maybe try to get some sleep too. Last but not least, the Cosmopolitan features rooms with balconies (!!!) that offer a stunning view of the Bellagio Fountains, the north-end of the strip and the mountains beyond.
Of course, we explored beyond our hotel. Other highlights included: dinner at Le Cirque inside the Bellagio and playing Poker and slots at Caesars Palace. By the way, this seemed to be one of the few casinos on the strip that features a Poker Room. Being able to walk to the various hotels, casinos, theaters and shops without having to go outside or at least use walkways above the street (with great views) adds to the feeling of an adult playground.
I seriously can't wait to go back to visit other hotels, like the New York - New York, Paris Las Vegas and the MGM Grande and places away from The Strip... and make time to take in a show.
We did check out downtown Las Vegas at night and during the day. That's where we celebrated a renewal of vows wedding at Graceland Chapel - topped off with a stretch limo ride down the Las Vegas Strip.
Again, I want to thank Stephen Conklin, Scott's brother, for showing us around. Oh, and I'd like to thank Scott for taking me on this unforgettable anniversary vacation! You rock my world, baby!

Choice City For Whom? Trailer
Shoreline Trail (Lory State Park III) - In A Colorado Minute (Week 235)
- - Shoreline Trail in Lory State Park, near Fort Collins, Colorado, is a 1-mile trail leading to Horsetooth Reservoir, which flanks the park on its eastern side.
While this is a very short trail, what you get to see is very diverse: the rolling meadow of Horsetooth Mountain Park, red cliffs, the hogbacks near the water, wildflowers (so beautiful even in autumn), barren trees damaged from fire next to lush green conifer trees and (at this time of year) trees letting go of their last yellow leaves... and then finally the reservoir itself with the vista of the eastern range and the Great Plains beyond. And on your way back you get a great view of Arthur's Rock, which I covered in the video Arthur's Rock (Lory State Park (II) - In A Colorado Minute (Week 206). Watch it here:
We had discovered this trail the day before and knowing that wind was in the forecast and all the autumn foliage would be gone soon, Whiskey and I ventured out there the next day... during a 25-mile an hour storm. Hope the images of Whiskey's ears flopping in the wind make up for the sometimes unsteady image caused by the wind rattling my tripod.

Dowdy Lake (Red Feather Lakes) - In A Colorado Minute (Week 174) [HD]
--- ---
Dowdy Lake in the Roosevelt National Forest is the largest lake in the Red Feather Lakes area. It's a gorgeous place for fishing, filming, camping, wild life watching and playing with your dog.
Whiskey Valentine had just learned to swim after a ball the day before at Horsetooth Reservoir - so she had clearly just become a real dog. You do see that this needed to be celebrated appropriately in my 1-minute video for the week, right?
Scott didn't catch anything in the lake that day - but the next day he caught a beautiful trout in the river. Oh, yes, this is the good life.
The music is an instrumental version of the Four Dollar Wine song Some Times. Since I'm the one who spliced the instrumental sections together, I have to apologize if I botched it a little bit - especially to Thimo Sander, who wrote the music.

Rise of the Super Moon - In A Colorado Minute (Week 224)
--- ---
When on Tuesday night we went out to watch and capture the Perseid Meteor Shower, it was the Super Moon rising, who stole the show. Even though I had already shot and planned another video for this week, I thought I'd go ahead and share this capture of the moon rising and some photos I took that night of the moon and the stars.
I hope this will inspire you to take a nice person, or just yourself, out to a place with some open space and watch the moon rise. When it's this big, it's quite amazing how quickly it rises and how it lifts your spirits and imagination.
To show you the moon rise in less than a minute, I sped the video up by 750%. The moon was already waning when I shot this. Maybe one of these days, I'll capture it when it's full.
If you watch a lot of my videos, you've probably noticed that I use songs by Josh Woodward a lot, who makes his music freely available. Up until this point, I've always used instrumental versions of his songs because it's usually easier to edit to, sometimes the combination of lyrics and images feels too much on the nose and sometimes the lyrics just don't fit the images. This week, for the first time, I'm using a version with lyrics - of the song Shadows in the Moonlight. He has a really nice voice and I like the message of the entire song a lot. Check out the full song, available under an Attribution License, here:
Last but not least, if you enjoyed watching this moonrise, please check out my moonrise video from last year: Harvest Moonrise Time-Lapse – In A Colorado Minute:

THE MADNESS FALL TOUR 2015:
You Bet Your Life: Secret Word - Light / Clock / Smile
Julius Henry Groucho Marx (October 2, 1890 -- August 19, 1977) was an American comedian and film and television star. He is known as a master of quick wit and widely considered one of the best comedians of the modern era. His rapid-fire, often impromptu delivery of innuendo-laden patter earned him many admirers and imitators. He made 13 feature films with his siblings the Marx Brothers, of whom he was the third-born. He also had a successful solo career, most notably as the host of the radio and television game show You Bet Your Life. His distinctive appearance, carried over from his days in vaudeville, included quirks such as an exaggerated stooped posture, glasses, cigar, and a thick greasepaint mustache and eyebrows. These exaggerated features resulted in the creation of one of the world's most ubiquitous and recognizable novelty disguises, known as Groucho glasses, a one-piece mask consisting of horn-rimmed glasses, large plastic nose, bushy eyebrows and mustache.
Groucho Marx was, and is, the most recognizable and well-known of the Marx Brothers. Groucho-like characters and references have appeared in popular culture both during and after his life, some aimed at audiences who may never have seen a Marx Brothers movie. Groucho's trademark eye glasses, nose, mustache, and cigar have become icons of comedy—glasses with fake noses and mustaches (referred to as Groucho glasses, nose-glasses, and other names) are sold by novelty and costume shops around the world.
Nat Perrin, close friend of Groucho Marx and writer of several Marx Brothers films, inspired John Astin's portrayal of Gomez Addams on the 1960s TV series The Addams Family with similarly thick mustache, eyebrows, sardonic remarks, backward logic, and ever-present cigar (pulled from his breast pocket already lit).
Alan Alda often vamped in the manner of Groucho on M*A*S*H. In one episode, Yankee Doodle Doctor, Hawkeye and Trapper put on a Marx Brothers act at the 4077, with Hawkeye playing Groucho and Trapper playing Harpo. In three other episodes, a character appeared who was named Captain Calvin Spalding (played by Loudon Wainwright III). Groucho's character in Animal Crackers was Captain Geoffrey T. Spaulding.
On many occasions, on the 1970s television sitcom All In The Family, Michael Stivic (Rob Reiner), would briefly imitate Groucho Marx and his mannerisms.
Two albums by British rock band Queen, A Night at the Opera (1975) and A Day at the Races (1976), are named after Marx Brothers films. In March 1977, Groucho invited Queen to visit him in his Los Angeles home; there they performed '39 a capella. A long-running ad campaign for Vlasic Pickles features an animated stork that imitates Groucho's mannerisms and voice. On the famous Hollywood Sign in California, one of the Os is dedicated to Groucho. Alice Cooper contributed over $27,000 to remodel the sign, in memory of his friend.
In 1982, Gabe Kaplan portrayed Marx in the film Groucho, in a one-man stage production. He also imitated Marx occasionally on his previous TV sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter.
Actor Frank Ferrante has performed as Groucho Marx on stage for more than two decades. He continues to tour under rights granted by the Marx family in a one-man show entitled An Evening With Groucho in theaters throughout the United States and Canada with piano accompanist Jim Furmston. In the late 1980s Ferrante starred as Groucho in the off-Broadway and London show Groucho: A Life in Revue penned by Groucho's son Arthur. Ferrante portrayed the comedian from age 15 to 85. The show was later filmed for PBS in 2001. Woody Allen's 1996 musical Everyone Says I Love You, in addition to being named for one of Groucho's signature songs, ends with a Groucho-themed New Year's Eve party in Paris, which some of the stars, including Allen and Goldie Hawn, attend in full Groucho costume. The highlight of the scene is an ensemble song-and-dance performance of Hooray for Captain Spaulding—done entirely in French.
In the last of the Tintin comics, Tintin and the Picaros, a balloon shaped like the face of Groucho could be seen in the Annual Carnival.
In the Italian horror comic Dylan Dog, the protagonist's sidekick is a Groucho impersonator whose character became his permanent personality.
The BBC remade the radio sitcom Flywheel, Shyster and Flywheel, with contemporary actors playing the parts of the original cast. The series was repeated on digital radio station BBC7. Scottish playwright Louise Oliver wrote a play named Waiting For Groucho about Chico and Harpo waiting for Groucho to turn up for the filming of their last project together. This was performed by Glasgow theatre company Rhymes with Purple Productions at the Edinburgh Fringe and in Glasgow and Hamilton in 2007-08. Groucho was played by Scottish actor Frodo McDaniel.
