Sam Mendes, the Oscar®-winning director of Skyfall, Spectre and American Beauty, brings his singular vision to his World War I epic, 1917.
At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (Captain Fantastic’s George MacKay) and Blake (Game of Thrones’ Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers—Blake’s own brother among them.
1917 is directed by Sam Mendes, who wrote the screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Showtime’s Penny Dreadful). The film is produced by Mendes and Pippa Harris (co-executive producer, Revolutionary Road; executive producer, Away We Go) for their Neal Street Productions, Jayne-Ann Tenggren (co-producer, The Rhythm Section; associate producer, Spectre), Callum McDougall (executive producer, Mary Poppins Returns, Skyfall) and Brian Oliver (executive producer, Rocketman; Black Swan).
The film is produced by Neal Street Productions for DreamWorks Pictures in association with New Republic Pictures. Universal Pictures will release the film domestically in limited release on December 25, 2019 and wide on January 10, 2020. Universal and Amblin Partners will distribute the film internationally, with eOne distributing on behalf of Amblin in the U.K.
USE OF 16mm MOTION PICTURE FILMS TO TRAIN U.S. NAVY PERSONNEL FILM TACTICS MOVIE 54414
Film Tactics is a black and white United States Navy non-classified Training Film. The film was to teach instructors how to use film as a teaching tool. It was copyrighted in 1945 by Harry Joe Brown. Harry Joe Brown was and American film producer and theatre and film director. He lived from 1890 to 1972. The film’s main characters are motion picture stars John Hamilton, Selmer Jackson, and Tom Keene.
The film opens showing a clock tower with the time 2:25 p.m. (0:23-0:32). Commodore D.L. Jones arrives in a military car and he is very angry (0:33-0:42). He passes Naval personnel in Navy uniform (0:42-0:47) and Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service, WAVES, in uniform (0:50-0:55). Orders are passed down the line from Commodore to instructors regarding their failure (0:56-2:02). Five instructors in uniform are shown. The Lieutenant is frustrated with them (2:04-2:42). He reviews what he had told the instructors. He shows a film called “The Countermarch” which shows a PT boat turning maneuver. A countermarch means to march in the opposite direction (2:47-4:08). The instructors are to teach this maneuver to their classes. They are to use the film to teach (4:16-5:07). H-hour: time set for the classes to start (5:13-5:25). Instructor one has Sam Sailor, whose mind is cluttered with a 12 gauge shotgun and a fly rod (5:27-6:26). No preparation by the instructor meant no learning by Sam (6:27-7:11). You must prepare the students for what’s coming (7:12-7:29). Instructor two has Mike who is hot and tired (7:34-8:12). Prepare the room, ventilate it. Because he was tired, Mike got very little out of the film (8:13-9:09). Instructor three gave a brief introduction but did not tell them what to look for, the student became bored and failed to finish listening, and the instructor did not allow discussion or questions (9:12-11:41). Class four instructor studied the film and prepared the class, however the student became mentally distracted before the class was done (11:44-13:11). Before teaching you need to know the subject and how to get an hour out of the material (13:09-13:29). Teaching tools: Training Aid Guide – Prepare, create Teaching Points, Demonstrate, Review, and Test (13:30-14:18). Well ventilated Class five – Walter starts out distracted (14:41-15:13). However, the Instructor emphasizes the need to know the maneuver (15:14-15:32). He tells the class what they are going to learn then shows the film to reinforce, or demonstrate, the points (16:10-17:04). He then Reviews the points (17:04-17:32). He ends by Testing their knowledge (17:33-18:26). The Real test is with the boats and the Commodore (18:29-18:51). The PT boats are shown moving forward (18:52-19:00). Are they prepared? Not four of them (19:01-20:10). Instructor Smith, however, prepared himself and his students under the best environment he could (20:11-20:31). The signal is given (20:31-20:37), but the PT boats went all different directions (20:38-21:37). The students had not learned the lesson. The instructors were at fault for not teaching correctly (21:38-22:03).

Prison fight: Super-max jail fight sends five inmates to hospital - TomoNews
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — Five inmates were injured during a massive fight at Illinois's Cook County Jail Friday around 1:30 p.m., in the jail's super-max division.
The mayhem began when an inmate standing near the center of the room punched another in the back of the head. Another inmate was then struck, causing his head to bounce off a cement pillar. Out cold, he remained on the floor until someone pulled him away.
Nearly 30 men in the general population room were present, but some clearly didn’t want to be involved and stayed close to the walls.
Guards eventually brought the situation under control with taser guns.
Several weapons were recovered including two that appear to have been made from inhaler parts. Officials are investigating how the inmates got hold of weapons.
Cara Smith, a spokeswoman for the jail, said five inmates were taken to hospital to be treated for their injuries, including stab wounds, but none of the injuries were life-threatening.
Four of the five inmates were in jail on murder charges while the fifth person was charged with armed robbery.

Westward Expansion: Crash Course US History #24
In which John Green teaches you about the Wild, Wild, West, which as it turns out, wasn't as wild as it seemed in the movies. When we think of the western expansion of the United States in the 19th century, we're conditioned to imagine the loner. The self-reliant, unattached cowpoke roaming the prairie in search of wandering calves, or the half-addled prospector who has broken from reality thanks to the solitude of his single-minded quest for gold dust. While there may be a grain of truth to these classic Hollywood stereotypes, it isn't a very big grain of truth. Many of the pioneers who settled the west were family groups. Many were immigrants. Many were major corporations. The big losers in the westward migration were Native Americans, who were killed or moved onto reservations. Not cool, American pioneers.

Join me as I visit the graves of Elizabeth Taylor, Walt Disney, Errol Flynn, Larry Fine, Gummo and Chico Marx, George Burns and Gracie Allen, Nat King Cole, Spencer Tracy, L. Frank Baum, and Casey Stengel. There are MANY more people buried here, including Michael Jackson.
Forest Lawn, as we know it, was born in 1917, when Dr. Hubert Eaton, a firm believer in a joyous life after death, took over management. He had become convinced that most current cemeteries were unsightly, depressing stoneyards, and pledged to create one that would reflect his optimistic beliefs, a cemetery that would be as unlike other cemeteries as sunlight is unlike darkness, as eternal life is unlike death.
Forest Lawn was designed to captivate visitors, and it does so quite well.
The Golden Age Hollywood stars buried here include some of the biggest names in the history of Hollywood: Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, Jimmy Stewart, Jean Harlow, Humphrey Bogart, Mary Pickford, Errol Flynn, Spencer Tracy...
No other cemetery can match the sheer number of superstars that you'll find buried here at Forest Lawn Glendale.
That includes George Burns & Gracie Allen, W.C. Fields, Tom Mix, Sammy Davis Jr., Walt Disney, Red Skelton, Robert Young, Lon Chaney, Ethel Waters, Alan Ladd, Dick Powell, Robert Taylor, Wallace Beery, Ted Knight, Sam Cooke, Joe E. Brown, Sydney Greenstreet, Nat King Cole, Jack Oakie, Ed Wynn, Jack Carson, Norma Shearer, Chico Marx, Dorothy Dandridge, Robert Cummings, Sid Grauman, Dan Daily, William Boyd (Hopalong Cassidy), Marie Dressler (Tugboat Annie), Irving Thalberg, Casey Stengel, Larry Fine, Aimee Semple McPherson, Edward Everett Horton and Jean Hersholt, plus authors Louis L'Amour, Theodore Dreiser and L. Till It Shines
Take away my inhibitions
Take away my solitude
Fire me up with your resistance
Put me in the mood
Storm the walls around this prison
Leave the inmates
Free the guards
Deal me up another future
From some brand new deck of cards
Take the chip off of my shoulder
Smooth out all the lines
Take me out among the rustling pines
Till it shines
Like an echo down a canyon
Never coming back as clear
Lately I just judge the distance
Not the words I hear
I've been too long on these islands
I've been far too long alone
I've been too long without summer
In this winter home
Still if we can make the effort
If we take the time
Maybe we can leave this much behind
Till it shines
See the rich man lost and lonely
Watch him as he dines
Sitting there just testing all the wines
Till it shines
