On Facebook i found a community about Lichtjes op oorlogsgraven, this means Lights on wargraves.I took some hours of from my work and left for a 40 minute drive to Holten with my wife Angelique. This unofficial ceremony was planned on 4:30PM and it would be a shame to be late. we arrived at 4:00PM and there allready were many people, some minutes before the ceremony the backpiper made a tribute to a fallen soldier. More and more people arrived at the cemetery, i think several thousands attended the ceremony. With the backpipers in front schoolchildren arrived at the cemetery, they placed the candles at all the graves. It was very exceeding, later that night i heard that candles were placed all over the Netherlands on about 140 locations.nadian War heroes.
Remembrance Ceremony at the Holten Canadian War Cemetery
Canadian Veterans and students attend a commemorative ceremony at the Holten Canadian War Cemetery, where some 1,350 Canadians are buried. The ceremony is an annual tradition organized by the Welcome Again Veterans Foundation.

The photos used in this video were taken at Holten and Apeldoorn (eternal flame) in 2010 during the 65th Anniversary of the Liberation of Netherlands. In attendance were members 48th Highlanders of Canada, St. Andrews College Pipes and Drums and the Toronto Fire Services Pipes and Drums

In this Cemetery, 1,355 Canadian Soldiers are buried. They sacrificed their lives liberating Holland from the evil of Nazi occupation. I would not be here today had it not been for the bravery of these young men. May we never forget. God Bless every one of those souls. The condition of the grounds is absolutely immaculate. A testament to the Dutch appreciation of our brave heroes.

Deze helden hebben tijdens de bevrijding van Nederland in de tweede wereldoorlog de hoogste prijs betaald voor onze vrijheid. De Canadese militairen hebben het oosten van Nederland bevrijd. Enschede en Hengelo via Delden en toen door naar het noorden, richting Zwolle. Het is een bezoek waard.
This is the Holten Second World War cemetery where soldiers are buried, mostly from Canada. Canadian troops liberated most of the east of Holland.
These heroes of the liberation of the Netherlands paid the ultimate price for our freedom. It is worth a visit.

1400 candles in 2010
Since 1991 the school children of Holten, Netherlands have on December 24th, placed candles on the graves of the Canadian soldiers who died liberating the town of Holten in the 2nd World War.

Indrukwekkende kerstavond op Canadese Begraafplaats Holten massaal bezocht 24 Dec 2018
HOLTEN – Terwijl familieleden op kerstavond gesneuvelde dierbaren in Canada herdenken, zetten kinderen in Holten een lichtje bij hun graf. Een traditie die ieder jaar opnieuw enorme indruk maakt. Naast verre familie waren ook de ambassadeurs echtpaar van Canada, 27 ambassade leden en Canadese militairen aanwezig om de serene ceremonie bij te wonen.
