STORYLINE:
The head of Russia's Catholic Church strongly denied on Tuesday that the Vatican's decision to set up four dioceses in Russia was aimed at expanding its influence in the predominantly Orthodox Christian country.
Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz, whom the Vatican gave the title of metropolitan and put in charge of the new Russian dioceses, told APTN that he hoped an understanding would be reached with the Russian Orthodox Church which has reacted strongly against the Vatican's move.
The Orthodox Church's Holy Synod, the day-to-day ruling body of the Russian church, said the new dioceses were a challenge to Orthodoxy, and accused the Vatican of trying to convert more Russians to Roman Catholicism.
Its chief of foreign relations, Metropolitan Kirill, hinted his church may stop all contact with the Vatican indefinitely.
Russia's Foreign Ministry also criticised the Vatican on Tuesday, saying it had acted against the advice of the Russian government and said it regrets that it's advice was ignored.
The Vatican set up the new dioceses on the basis of the four apostolic administrations, a lower temporary form of representation, which were based in Moscow, Novosibirsk, Saratov and Irkutsk.
According to Kondrusiewicz, there are around 600-thousand catholics in Russia. The Russian Orthodox Church does not release figures on its followers, but the British-based Keston Institute has said that about two-thirds of Russians consider themselves Orthodox.

The Cathedral of Irkutsk - The Cathedral of the Icon of the Mother of God of Kazan was a huge Byzantine style four-pillared five-cupola place of worship. The main building being connected by a passage to the Cathedral Bell-tower.
For almost half a century, the idea of a great cathedral for Irkutsk was discussed. Finally, in 1849, , the Irkutsk millionaire-gold miner Evfimiy Andreevich Kuznetsov made a large donation of 250 thousand rubles. However, it took until April 17, 1875, on the birthday of Emperor Alexander II, for the solemn laying of the foundation stone. Almost from the beginning of the project disagreements arose between the Holy Synod and the architect, V.A. Kudelsky.....This finally led to his dismissal from the works.
Engineer-captain Mitrofan Nilovich Ogon-Dogonovsky, who compiled a new project of the Kazan Cathedral, was invited to supervise the construction of the cathedral. The facade of the cathedral was repeatedly adjusted, because it did not satisfy the metropolitan authorities in artistic terms. Finally, Emperor III wrote, annoyingly I agree, it's a little better, but not particularly tasteful. However, now there's nothing to be done.....
By June 1879, the walls of the cathedral were erected to the height of the second tier of windows, when a terrible fire destroyed half of the city and suspended the construction of the cathedral for six years.
After the fire, the engineer-architect Baron Heinrich Vladimirovich Rozen was invited to lead the works. The project was approved by the St. Petersburg Technical Committee with a resolution that the facade of the cathedral in its last form was more elegant in artistic terms.
The construction of the Cathedral was completed, finally, in 1894. In total, 904,025 rubles 42 ½ kopecks were spent for the construction and establishment of church utensils........
The consecration of the main chapel in the name of the icon of Kazan Mother of God took place on January 25, 1894. From the end of January until the end of August 1894, Archbishop Tikhon consistently consecrated the remaining altars of the new cathedral. After the October Revolution, in conditions of persecution and terror against the church, the life of the cathedral began to wain considerably. In 1919 the steam heating was destroyed and divine services began to be performed only in the warm season. The cathedral was blown up in 1932. The broken brick was used to fill the area, the level of which, after levelling off the remains of the cathedral, rose almost a metre.
In 1938, almost at the same place where the majestic Kazan Cathedral stood, began the construction of the House of Soviets.

The reunion of the Crimean Peninsula with the Russian Federation was celebrated Sunday in Sevastopol, with a large Easter cake which weighs half a ton (1,000 pounds) topping the festivities.
Brought from Rostov-on-Don and gifted to Crimean and Sevastopol citizens to eat, the 'Tsar-Paskha' is the largest Easter cake of its kind under the Record Book of Russian Federation and Europe.

Germany: Russian Orthodox community celebrate Victory Day with new cross
Several dozen believers attended the inauguration of a new cross at the Russian Orthodox Saint George monastery in Milmersdorf on Wednesday, erected in remembrance of WWII victims and in celebration of Victory Day. The cross was blessed by the Russian Orthodox Archbishop of Berlin and Germany Feofan Galinskij.

Hundreds of Russian believers prayed for good fortune in the year 2001 as Moscow's main church ushered in Orthodox Christmas on Sunday.
The service was held at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, whose reconstruction was officially declared complete this year.
The cathedral was blown up and razed to the ground on the late Soviet dictator Josef Stalin's orders in the 1930s.
Russians celebrate Christmas on January 7, which corresponds to December 25 of the Julian calendar, which is still used by the Orthodox Church.
The Russian Orthodox Church, as well as other mainstream religions, has seen revival in the past years following the collapse of the Soviet Union in which religion was effectively banned and atheism was imposed by the state.

Acting Russian President Vladimir Putin attended a special Christmas mass led by Alexei II, head of the Russian Orthodox church on Friday.
Putin acknowledged the importance of respecting the various faiths and their festivities but, he explained, there is no change in Russia's goals and plans for Grozny.
Continuing the special mood of religious festivities that has coincided between the Russian Orthodox Church's Christmas and Islam's end to Ramadan and the Eid festivity, a special Christmas mass was held in Christ the Saviour Cathedral on Friday.
Alexei II, the Russian Orthodox Church leader offered a special mass upon his return from Jerusalem to which many attended.
The Orthodox church traditionally celebrates two weeks after the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches.
In what has now become a public holiday in post-communist Russia, even the Acting President, Vladimir Putin, attended mass.
Putin, like everyone at the ceremony, made the sign of the cross and listened to the choir - perhaps a moment of reflection, as Russia's military postponed its attacks on Grozny on Friday.

Location: Center of Harbin in Heilongjiang Province.
Getting There:
St. Sophia Cathedral is on the corner of Toulin Street (Toulin Jie) and Zhaolin Street (Zhaolin Jie) in the central Daoli district of Harbin.
St.Sofia Orthodox Church is the largest Orthodox Church building in the Far East. It was built early in the 20th century, for the Russians and other Orthodox people living around Harbin. View Jewish Heritage in China. It is 53.3 meters (175 feet) tall, and it occupies an area of 721 square meters (0.18 acres). The style of the building is Neo-Byzantine. The main structure is laid out in the shape of a cross with the main hall topped with a huge green tipped dome. There are smaller steeples, and the domes and steeples are topped with gold colored crosses. It looks like the church building at the Red Square in Moscow. It is beautiful to look at, and the interior is beautifully designed and decorated. It is one of Harbin’s most magnificent buildings.
Features:
The church building sits on a plaza. It has red walls with a green dome and steeples that are topped with golden crosses. To non-Russians, it is a highly unusual looking building. Though the building’s interior was damaged after the revolution, it is still beautiful. There are icons (religious pictures) hanging on the walls and a big chandelier. The lighting used inside the building that combines with the light coming in from the windows and the light colors used inside such as gold and green and bright red is really beautiful. It gives a warm and cozy feeling.
History:
Harbin itself doesn’t have a long history as a city unlike most other Chinese cities. The Japanese defeated the Russians during a war in 1905, and the Russian No. 4 Army Division arrived in the region. A wooden building called St. Sophia Church was built at the site, and it was finished in 1907. Then construction on the existing structure began in 1923 for the Orthodox of the region, and it was finished 9 years later. It is a work of art.

STORYLINE
Orthodox Christians in Russia on Monday celebrated the Christian festival of Epiphany by attending church services and swimming in the ice cold waters of the country's rivers and lakes.
In the capital Moscow, the Metropolitan Kirill - the interim patriarch of Russia - conducted a service in the Epiphany Cathedral.
Hundreds of people attended the mass and waited in long lines outside to have their plastic bottles filled with holy water, water that had been blessed by the patriarch.
The Russian Orthodox faithful believe that holy water blessed on Epiphany has special healing qualities, and they administer it to heal ailments.
Many store the water at home for the year and it is customary to drink a little every morning before eating.
Priests also recommend the holy water be sprinkled on food and other household goods.
Other believers on Monday took to the Moskva River to seek God's blessing by immersing themselves in the freezing waters three times.
It's believed that on this special day, the waters of Russia's waterways are holy.
The Orthodox Holy Day commemorates the baptisms of the first Russian Christians in 988 AD (Anno Domini).
