Warsaw In Your Pocket - Holy Cross Church (Kościół Św. Krzyża)
No Chopinologist can leave Warsaw without first visiting the final resting place of his heart. Added to the church in 1882 his heart was sealed in an urn and then placed behind a tablet bearing his likeness specially carved by Leonardo Marconi.
Although this serves as the churches key draw theres several other features of note to tempt the visitor inside this astonishing Baroque creation. The churches history originally dates from the 15th century when a small wooden chapel stood on the site. Destroyed during the Swedish Deluge of the 1650s construction on a church to replace it began in 1682, the cornerstone being ceremoniously laid by Prince Jakub, son of King Jan III Sobieski. Designed by the royal architect, Jakub Bellotti, it was completed in 1696 though through time would see numerous additions to its shape. The most notable of these would come in the following century when Józef Fontana added two Baroque crowns to the square-cut twin towers. His son Jakub would later extensively refurbish the façade with Jan Jerzy Plersch adding elaborate decorative touches to the interior.

Inside the Holy Cross Church in Warsaw
Bonus video for Vlog #8 - Presenting to you the simple but serene interiors of the Holy Cross Church in Warsaw, near the Copernicus statue leading to the Nowy Swiat.
The Holy Cross Church has 2 hidden gems:
1. The big statue of Pope John Paul II
2. The heart of Frederick Chopin
We had to walk for several minutes to reach this simple church. One would not notice it much if you wouldn't look up on the staircase to chance upon the big statue of Christ bearing His cross. Luckily, we bumped into some friendly tourists who told us to specifically look for the Christ carrying the cross statue on the staircase/balcony area, almost in front of the Copernicus statue. Few minutes later, we found this simple church.
The Holy Cross Church is a Catholic Church located in the famous Krakowskie Przedmiescie just opposite the University of Warsaw and the Nicolaus Copernicus statue. It is a baroque church with a beautiful golden altar that will surely draw your eyes to wear it is.
The church dates back to the 15th century when it was still a wooden chapel. This church had been through many destruction. It was destroyed during the Swedish Deluge in 1650 and was later rebuilt. Then it was destroyed again during the WWII and was again rebuilt after the war. For many Polish, this church has symbolized the fall of Warsaw and its rebuilt.
Many tourists had already flocked the church when we arrived. But we were very careful to draw attention to us nor make unnecessary noise since this is a functioning Catholic Church. And as Catholics, we came here to pray, and also check out the beautiful interiors and the hidden gems it holds.
One might wonder if it is true that Chopin's heart is buried in this church, it is indeed true. His heart was placed in an urn and kept behind the plaque on a particular pillar inside the church while his body was buried in Paris. This was Chopin's request before he passed away, knowing that his body would never come back to Poland. He wanted his heart to be buried in his beloved native Poland.
And on the left side as you enter the church, there is a big statue of St. John Paul II where you could pray and light candles for your intercessions. We also prayed in that area and offered our intercessions.
The Holy Cross Church is one of the prominent baroque churches in all of Poland. It is certainly worth visiting. However, please pay respects to those who are praying while inside the church.

Warsaw, Poland - Unravel Travel TV
Warsaw is Poland's largest city and an economic, political, and cultural centre. It's a bustling metropolis harbouring an unforgettable history and today offers parkland as well as a city full of culture - you will find historic palaces and churches amongst modern architecture, while cosy cafes compete with fashionable clubs. The city's history itself is believed to have begun with the creation and development of Old Warsaw (Stara Warszawa), which was set on what is today known as the Old Town (Stare Miasto). Mazovian Prince Bolesław II brought prosperous traders to the Old Town, and his headquarters were based there. Warsaw is also known for its famous musical resident, Fryderyk Chopin, who for the first half of his 39 years, was associated with Warsaw. It was in Warsaw that he studied music, where he was formally educated, and where his heart found its final resting place. The last time Chopin played a concert in Warsaw was in October of 1830, at the National Theatre. He died on October 17, 1849 and was buried at the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris. His heart, however, came back to Warsaw -- it was his most fervent desire to have his heart buried in Warsaw -- and it now lies in the Holy Cross Church (kościół św. Krzyża) on Krakowskie Przedmieście Street.

When visiting Warsaw, check out the following places:
Łazienki Królewskie Park-Palace Complex:
The park and palace complex at Łazienki is one of the most beautiful of this type in Europe. Established in the 17th century, the landscape gardens feature many interesting architectural monuments, especially the Palace on the Island built for King Stanislaw August Poniatowski -- Poland's last monarch. It served as his summer residence and was famous for the Thursday dinners.
Wilanów Park-Palace Complex:
The summer residence of King Jan III Sobieski and then Augustus II as well as subsequent aristocratic families. It stands as an excellent representation of European Baroque at its height and a homage to the former greatness of the Republic. The palace is surrounded by a grandiose, two level Baroque Italian garden and a romantic park in an English style. Wilanów is the venue of important cultural events and concerts. The former stables house the Poster Museum.
Palace of Culture and Science:
Completed in 1955 as a 'gift from the Soviet people', the building is the embodiment of Socialist Realist architecture. It is still the tallest building in Poland and fulfils the role of a cultural centre accommodating theatres, museums, a cinema and a concert hall. The highest viewing platform in Warsaw, on the 30th foor, offers an excellent panoramic view of the city.
Warsaw Rising Museum:
Opened in 2004, on the 60th anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, the museum pays tribute to all those who fought and died for their country's independence. Housed in a former tramway power station, the modern museum guides visitors through interactive displays, video footage and photographs.
National Museum:
The museum contains a rich collection of exhibits from antiquity to modern times. The building originates from the inter-war period. During the World War II it secretly stored some of the Royal Castle treasures. It organizes numerous temporary exhibitions presenting art from all over the world. The Vistula-side building wing is the Museum of the Polish Army presenting the history of Polish military featuring an interesting outdoor exhibition.
Warsaw Zoological Garden:
Established in 1928, the garden is now inhabited by several thousand animals, yet the real personalities of the Warsaw Zoo are the brown bears whose area is located outside the garden, near Solidarności Avenue, and can be viewed by passers-by.
University of Warsaw Library:
The facade of the building, which resembles a line of open books, is one of the most interesting examples of contemporary architecture in Warsaw. The roof garden is open to the public.
Places related to Fryderyk Chopin:
Fryderyk Chopin is undoubtedly the best known resident of Warsaw. He spent the first 20 years of his life in the city. Here he studied music, learned the manners of society and gave his first concerts. Walking the streets of Warsaw you will pass buildings where he stayed or which he visited. There are many places which are a homage paid to his talent and Warsaw boasts the world's largest Chopin memorabilia collection.

St. John's Archcathedral, Warsaw, Masovian, Poland, Europe
St. John's Archcathedral in Warsaw is a Catholic church in Warsaw's Old Town. St. John's stands immediately adjacent to Warsaw's Jesuit church, and is one of the oldest churches in the city and the main church of the Warsaw archdiocese. It is one of three cathedrals in Warsaw, but the only one which is also an archcathedral. St. John's Archcathedral is one of Poland's national pantheons. Along with the city, the church has been listed by UNESCO as of cultural significance. Originally built in the 14th century in Masovian Gothic style, the Cathedral served as a coronation and burial site for numerous Dukes of Masovia. The Archcathedral was connected with the Royal Castle (Zamek Królewski w Warszawie) by an elevated 80-meter-long corridor that had been built by Queen Anna Jagiellonka in the late 16th century and extended in the 1620s after Michał Piekarski's failed 1620 attempt to assassinate King of Poland Sigismund III in front of the Cathedral. After the resolution of the Constitution of May 3, 1791, at the end of the session at the Royal Castle, King Stanisław August Poniatowski went to the Cathedral of St. John to repeat the Oath of the Constitution in front of the Altar, in the face of God. Also the Marshals of the Great Sejm were carried to the Archathedral on the shoulders of the enthusiastic deputies of the Sejm. The church was rebuilt several times, most notably in the 19th century, it was preserved until World War II as an example of English Gothic Revival. In 1944, during the Warsaw Uprising the Cathedral was a place of struggle between insurgents and advancing German army. The Germans managed to induct a tank loaded with explosives into the Cathedral, a huge explosion destroyed large part of the building. After the collapse of the Uprising German Vernichtungskommando (Destruction Detachment) drilled holes into the walls for explosives and blow up the Cathedral destroying 90% of its walls. Leveled during the Warsaw Uprising (August--October 1944), it was rebuilt after the war. The exterior reconstruction is based on the 14th-century church's presumed appearance (according to an early-17th-century Hogenberg illustration and a 1627 Abraham Boot drawing), not on its prewar appearance. The profuse Early Baroque decoration inside from the beginning of the 17th century and magnificent painting on the main altar by Palma il Giovane depicting Virgin and Child with St. John the Baptist and St. Stanisław were destroyed in German bombing of the church on August 17, 1944. The remains of the church were blown up by the Germans in November 1944. Only one wall that somehow managed to survive was all that was left of the six hundred year old edifice. This devastation of a Polish national monument was a part of the Planned destruction of Warsaw, which had officially begun after the collapse of the Warsaw Uprising. The painting of the Virgin and Child.. was created in 1618 for King Sigismund III Vasa especially to place on the central altar of the St. John's Cathedral. As a masterpiece it was confiscated on Napoleon's order and transported to Paris. Retrieved by Warsaw authorities in 1820s after the Congress of Vienna. It survived many wars and the bombing of Warsaw since it was created, but did not survive the last one during World War II. Among the sculptures lost due to German bombardment the most worh mentioning was a marble bust of Jan Franciszek Bieliński, voivode of Malbork (died 1685), carved by Jean-Joseph Vinache. The interior reconstruction design considerably differed from the pre-war Cathedral, taking it back in time to its raw Gothic look, because very little of the cathedral's original furnishings has been preserved. The Cathedral is a three-nave building, two aisles are the same height as the main nave. On the right side from the front a belfry is situated, a passage to Dziekania Street is situated underneath it. There is a pulpit from 1959, designed by Józef Trenarowski and stalls which are a replica of the destroyed baroque ones, founded by the king John III Sobieski. Moreover, there are many chapels, gravestones and epitaphs in the Cathedral. All left aisle is filled with numerous chapels. They are, in turn, from main altar: Baryczka Chapel, it ends the left aisle (it contains a wooden crucifix, regarded as the most precious element of the cathedral's furnishings; it was brought from Nuremberg in 1539 by the merchant Jerzy Baryczka).
