Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago, Illinois is the seat of the Archdiocese of Chicago, one of the largest Roman Catholic dioceses in the United States. The current Archbishop of Chicago is Cardinal Blase J. Cupich. Holy Name Cathedral replaced the Cathedral of Saint Mary and the Church of the Holy Name, which were destroyed by the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, and was dedicated on November 21, 1875. A cornerstone inscription still bears marks from the murder of North Side Gang member Hymie Weiss, who was killed across the street on October 11, 1926.
Holy Name Cathedral was built in the Gothic revival architectural style while at the same time integrating motifs symbolic of the message of the modern Church. The church building is 233 feet (71 m) long, 126 feet (38 m) wide and can seat 1,110 people. The ceiling is 70 feet (21 m) high and has a spire that reaches 210 feet (64 m) into the sky. Overall, the cathedral features motifs meant to instill an ambience of physically dwelling in the biblical tree of life.
The first feature that greets worshipers are massive bronze doors designed by Albert J. Friscia that weigh 1200 pounds each. The doors introduce the overall Tree of Life theme with intricate details that serve to make the doors look like overwhelming planks of wood. The doors possess a hydraulic system that allows them to be opened with the push of a finger. Beyond the doors is a vestibule encased in glass.
Once inside the church, the most striking feature is the suspended Resurrection Crucifix sculpted by the artist Ivo Demetz. Adorning the walls of the nave are the Stations of the Cross by artist Goffredo Verginelli depicting the Passion, Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ. The stations are cast in bronze and framed in red Rocco Alicante marble.
A cathedra, or bishop's throne, is what makes the church a cathedral. It is from this chair that Sedes Chicagiensis, or See of Chicago, is presided over by the archbishop of Chicago. Unlike most Roman Catholic cathedra, the Cathedra of the See of Chicago is plain and simple. Its back contains three panels depicting the first Christian teachers: Christ in the center panel, Saint Peter to his right, and Saint Paul to his left.
In 1874, Brooklyn architect Patrick Charles Keely, who would later also design St. Stanislaus Kostka, was selected to draw plans for the new cathedral of Chicago. On July 19 of that year, the cornerstone was laid. On November 21 of the following year, Bishop Thomas Foley dedicated the church and christened it the Cathedral of the Holy Name. In 1880, the Diocese of Chicago was reorganized to become the Archdiocese of Chicago and Holy Name Cathedral became the church of primacy over several other dioceses in the Midwest United States.

The the roaring 20's in Chicago was a time of open warfare between two powerful criminal organizations each seeking to control the cities illegal vice industry. It was the south side Italians led by Johnny Torrio then Al Capone against the northside Irish headed by Dion O'Bannion, Hymie Weiss, and Bugs Moran. In the end the Italians were victorious because they could deliver the big hit while the north siders blew there big chances. And this spot on Chicago's near north side was the site of two of the biggest hits delivered by the south siders.
The second assassination spot is the one you see first on the video clip. The steps of Holy Name Cathedral was the site of the execution of Hymie Weiess then leader of the northsiders. Gunmen in a apartment across the street opened fire on Weiss and his enterouge. He was killed by a wild shot fired by his own bodyguard. You can still see marks on the cornerstone from bullets fired in the shooting.
The men were heading into a flower store across the street. Next door to the rooming house where the gunmen fired from. The flower store was owned by the gang and was the site of the hit on Dion O'Bannion who was the previous head of the northside gang, That had happened a couple of years earlier and resulted in the failed hits on Johnny Torrio and Al Capone. Taking us back to the second hit.
Of course the war between north and south would continue and three years later Capone would (allegedly) make his third big hit this time against Bugs Moran. But they missed their target and the outcry over the slaughter of so many at once was the downfall of Big Al. It would also result in a stronger, smarter organization headed by Paul the Waiter Ricca. One that would control the city and surrounding area for all practical purposes for almost forty years. It was in fact the most powerful criminal organization in the country because of it's local control.

On our blog we have started posting a history of this organization that for many years had an incredible amount of influence and power over the second largest city in the country. While there was corruption in most of the big cities the level of influence in Chicago and many nearby suburbs was much stronger. In the HBO series Boardwalk Empire they have a storyline that is based the Chicago outfit and it's where we start our series.

Chicago's Oldest Monument
The Illinois/Indiana State Line Boundary Marker is the oldest monument it the City of Chicago. In 1988 the marker was restored and relocated to a new position outside the State Line Generating Plant. The plant closed in 2012 and was demolished, only its Art Deco entrance remains. Since that time the boundary marker has had its bronze plaques removed which use to read State line retraced by act of Congress 1833, boundary of Illinois, boundary of Indiana, This monument is 159.359 miles due north from the Wabash River and 191.09 feet north from its original site.

A photo taken by a parishioner at Our Lady of Perpetual Help shows a illuminating human figure that appears to be the Virgin Mary. This miraculous story was reported by WGN-TV Chicago.
One north suburban Catholic Church is talking about a very thought provoking picture, shot with nothing more than an Iphone.
One woman snapped a photo last Friday in the chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Glenview and says she got so much more.
Maureen Kent has been attending Eucharistic adoration at the church for more than 2 years. Kneeling last Friday, she wanted a picture of the Eucharist or host in the monstrance, the ornate gold stand it’s placed in.
The picture showed a bright light, an image larger than a human and appearing to hover next to the host on the alter. Catholics believe the host is the True Body of Christ.
No photo-shopping, she says, no doctoring the digital image. Just what she calls a great surprise when she looked at her screen.
Her friends in the chapel also believe it is the Virgin Mary. Authentication is not, right now, a consideration by Maureen Kent or even the church. They are relishing what they call a miraculous moment, privileged to have seen and believed, they say.

State Street became a shopping destination during the 1900s and is referred to in the song Chicago, sung by Frank Sinatra where Frank refers it to State Street, that great street. In 1979, Mayor Jane Byrne converted the downtown portion into a pedestrian mall with only bus traffic allowed. Mayor Richard M. Daley oversaw the State Street Revitalization Project and on November 15, 1996, the street was reopened to traffic.[6]
During the second half of the 20th century, State Street was eclipsed by Michigan Avenue's Magnificent Mile as a shopping district. Various projects to restore State Street's glory have been met with some success, and the State Street corridor is gaining residential as well as more traditional commercial development. New York & Company, Old Navy, Urban Outfitters, and The Children's Place have recently opened up flagships on State Street. Borders Books had a flagship on State, but the Borders chain has since shut down. Today, the only two main department store chains that remain are Macy's (the former Marshall Field's flagship store) and Sears (now closed) on State. The department store chain Carson Pirie Scott closed their flagship store on State Street on February 21, 2007 after over 100 years of business in that location. The Block 37 opened in 2009, bringing with it a large group of upscale retailers to State Street, including Anthropologie, Puma AG, and Zara. On January 12, 2012, Walgreens's opened a flagship location at Randolph Street,[7][8][9][10] where it had previously existed from 1926 to 2005,[11] when construction of Joffrey Tower necessitated its demolition.

Chicago Archdiocese Releases Child Sex Abuse Documents
Internal documents released to the public on January 21 st by the Archdiocese of Chicago revealed more details about child sexual abuse allegations against 30 priests, all in cases prior to 1996. While most of the cases have already settled with the archdiocese, and none of the 30 priests named in the documents are still in the ministry, the release was an emotional moment for victims, families, and advocates who have worked for nearly a decade to reach this moment of truth. There are still 35 other priest files yet to be released, that also include some more recent allegations. The alleged sexual abuse of hundreds of children is wildly disturbing, but what is even more disturbing is the pattern of response indicated in the nearly 6,000 pages released today. It's clear that incidents were not immediately reported to authorities, accused priests were simply moved or promoted, and many priests were placed back into the ministry. Although Church officials pass the blame to their predecessors and deny any attempts to cover up abuse scandals, it's clear that there were serious problems with how these cases were handled—and hundreds of victims were left to carry the weight of that negligence. My name is Mark Brown, and I'm a partner with the law firm of Lane & Lane. In our firm, we've worked with many families who have been affected by sexual misconduct against children—including cases against doctors, Boy Scout leaders, and even several of the priests named in these recently released documents. We are currently litigating a case against the Archdiocese of Chicago that is scheduled to go to trial in September of this year. Our case alleges that the Archdiocese was negligent in allowing abuse against our client to occur, and that they failed to prevent the priest in question from being ordained and appointed as a pastor and teacher given what was known about his past transgressions.
